Tomorrow is my first home game for field hockey. We play Lock Haven. I am very excited about it because I have a very good chance of starting. Being part of a team at Penn State University is an honor. Being able to compete for a Divison 1 college is amazing to me. So far we have received many different kinds of clothing that we are able to keep. It is like Christmas in August. We get treated very differently than the "average" students on campus. We are able to schedule classes earlier, live in nicer dorms as freshman, and receive any type of academic help right away. It is umbelieveable the difference that a student-athlete has. It also helps the transition from high school to college so much easier because you already know a bunch of girls and it just makes everything to much easier. I am so glad I chose to come to Penn State. It is going to be awesome!

Wow! Today was an awesome day! On Thursday's I don't have any classes which is great! The only set back to that is I have mandatory study hall hours because I am an athlete. I have to put in 8 hours every week and if I don't meet that amount of time I will be punished by my coach. I believe it is helpful though because it forces me to get my work done. When I am in my dorm room, school work is not the first thing on my mind. This way I can get all my work done and it can get done correctly. I had practice today from 12:30-3:30. It wasn't very hard because we have our first home opener tomorrow. Actually, our coach made practice a lot of fun. Tonight I am going to support the girls soccer team. They have a game at 7:00 and then I have to come home and rest up for my game tomorrow. So all in all I say I had a pretty relaxing day!

So my first weekend of college is offically winding down. College life is great. There are really no rules to life right now. I can go out whenever I want to. I never have to ask my parents when I am allowed to go out or what time I have to be home because I am on my own now. There is so much freedom. I had a field hockey game on Friday and on Sunday and we won both of them. It was great because we are now 2-0 on our new home turf which is awesome. Our coach was very pleased with our performance. Oh my gosh, I forgot to mention the football game. Wow that was so much fun. There were so many people there dressed up in Penn State clothing. It was great. Being in the stadium is awesome because it is so loud and everyone is cheering. It is just amazing how much school spirit Penn State has. I had a really fun time!

Tonight I am leaving at 5:30 to go to Princeton to play a field hockey game. We get to stay over in a hotel which is always fun! In the morning we will eat breakfast in the hotel, most likely practice, eat lunch and then get ready for our game. Even though I love playing field hockey and love going on away trips, it is going to be very hard to make up all of my work that I will miss. Wednesday's are one of my biggest days for class and not being there is going to be very stressful. I am not a big fan of missing class because I like to be there to listen to what the professor has to say. Hopefully, my professors will help me out in getting caught up but it will be tough.

Right now I am sitting in study hall thinking to myself how in the world am I ever going to get all of my work done. I feel like i finish an assignment and have hundreds more to do. College homework is so much harder than high school. In high school, noone ever did anything. I could have gotten away with anything in my school. But at college things are a bit different. There is so much reading to do and so much more on your own. The professors expect you to know what your homework is rather in high school the teacher would tell you many of times to make sure you do it. Once I get used to the transition, I think I will be ok.

Today is a very long day. Last night, we didn't get home from Princeton until 2:00 in the morning. The bus ride seemed forever. Trying to sleep and do your work, is a very difficult task to obtain. I had to get up this morning rather early so I could come into study hall and get my hours in. Then I had practice all after noon and now I am back in study hall. Wow, what a day! I do not think I have ever been so tired before in my life. I just feel like I am always on the go. I rarely get to stop and have a minute to myself but I guess thats what playing a Division 1 sport is all about. I really have to manage my time and make sure I am getting all of my work done. I can not just concentrate on hockey because I will fail school and that will not be a good thing.

Today was a very special day. I had a field hockey game which we won 6-1. Then I had to lift directly after the game. We always have a taligate afterwards so that was always good of course! My parents came up to watch the game so they took me shopping but I wasn't really in the best of mood. As they dropped me off at the dorm, I was trying to get all of my bags out of the car and I left my cell phone on the back seat. I didn't notice until a minute after they left. I tired calling them but they didn't answer their phone. I finally got a hold of them when they were about 10 minutes from home. I told them that I really need my cell phone so luckly I only live about a hour and 20 minutes away. They decided to drive back up here to give me my cell phone back. They took my friend and I out to dinner and it ended up being a great night! I was very thankful that they were so nice!

Debate and dialogue are both forms of arguments but I feel that debate is a lot stronger. When one wants to debate, they usually have a strong feeling in their mind about the point the are trying to get across and they will not change their mind for anything. However, I feel dialogue could be used for a little more discussion. Dialogue is a lot more low key. It is used to discuss ideas and learn more about them so you can choose a side.

Something really happened yesterday that was quite exciting. Our coach Char Morette reached a milestone. It was her 300th win at Penn State. This accomplishment has not been done be many coaches in Division Field Hockey. We played the Temple Owls who were suppose to be a competition to us and crushed them 5-0. It was awesome. She was very emotional after the game because she was not only proud of herself but us as well. It was great to be apart of such a great accomplishment.

This weekend was quite crazy. Friday we had a game at Lafeyette which is pretty far away. We had to leave around 1:00 for a 7:00 game. We ended up beating the team 7-0 so it was a pretty easy game. We stopped at McDonald's which was very surprising because we usually aren't allowed to eat junk. It was a nice treat! We didn't end up getting home until 1:00 in the morning. So I was a bit tired. Then our coached told us we had practice the next morning at 11:00. So I was pretty excited about that because I was able to sleep in.

Wow, the football game was so much fun! My friend and I didn't have student tickets because we get the tickets from my dad. But we decided to see if we could get into the student section. Well it ende up that we could and let me tell you its a whole different world. Everyone is constantly cheering! It's awesome. It is so much better than sitting with all of the families. My parents were up for the game so they took me out to dinner which was nice. It's always great to see your parents!

So tonight's dinner in McElwain was very different. My friends and I walked in and every worker is wearing a straw hat. There is country music playing and there are red and white checkered table cloths on all of the tables. It was crazy. They had fresh corn for everyone to have. There was a husking contest and the winner won a huge cake. It was very funny to watch kids husk corn. The winner was some boy and he started eating the cake right there. The cake was huge. The whole cafeteria could of had a piece. It was an eventful dinner!

So today was the best day. No practice!! I actually could relax in my room, take a nap and do what I wanted to do. This won't ever really happen again because its very rare that we get a day off like this so I have to take advantage of it. All I will probably do is work so I can get caught up. So its not a very exciting day but productive!

I am starting to get very stressed about school. It just seems like I never stop doing work. I feel like I have to start studying for a test very far in advance because there is so much material to cover. I really want to do well this marking period so I can get off to a good start. As a freshman in high school, I really didn't do well and it was really hard to bring my G.P.A up so I don't want to have a repeat.

Wow so won our first big ten game this weekend! It was awesome. I have to say that big ten games are a lot more intense than any other game. The intensity just raises up a notch. It felt so great to beat a team by 4 goals. Thats very unheard of in this conference. Our coach was very excited that we played so well. We worked really hard that week at practice that we deserved to have such a victory. I can't wait until we play another big ten school!

I don't even know where to begin with the day that I had today. It was horrible. Waking up this morning was so hard. I had to wake up at 7:00 because I had to get my morning lift it! Oh what fun. Then it seemed like I had hundred classes. After that I went to practice which was so hard today. I really don't know why it was so hard because we have a game on Wednesday. Then we went to dinner and all I felt like doing was sit there but of course we had to come to study hall. It is such a hassle sometimes because I never feel like getting up and walking to study hall but I have to do it.

How to make noodles:

1. Fill a pot with water about 3/4 of the way.

2. Put the pot on the stove and turn it up to high.

3. When the water start to bubble, put the pasta in the pot

4. Cook for about 8-10 minutes or until the noodles are soft

5. When the pasta is done, remove the pot from the stove and cpour the pasta into a colander in the sink.

6. Shake all of the water out of the colander

7. Serve

When I got up today, I was freezing. It is only September and the weather feels like it is winter. I never really realized how cold it's actually going to get up here. I think I might have to bring my snow suit. I hate cold weather so I really don't know how I am going to deal with this. I rather be extremely hot than cold. I can never seem to enjoy myself when I am freezing. I was also told that it stays this cold until April or so. That is a very long time so I am definitely going to have to stock up on all of my winter clothing.

Enthymeme

Ex: The got screamed at becasue he was mean.

The boy got screamed at so he was mean.

If somoene is mean then they get screamed at.

This isn't true becasue you can get screamed at for many other different reasons and just because you are mean doesn't necessarily mean you have to get screamed at.

Tonight I listened to one of the best speakers I have ever experienced. His name was Mike Green. He talked to us about alcohol and the reasons that we should be responsible. The reason why I liked him so much was because he told everything straight forward. He didn't cut any corners. He was an alcoholic when he was in college and it was neat to see how is recovered from it. He taught me a lot of new things and now I will really watch my friends and make sure everything is ok. He made a lot of people laugh but I really think he got through to most everyone in the room. I would recommend anyone listening to him because he is definiatly worth anyone's time.

So I have my first cold of the year. I thought I was going to at least be able to make it till Thanksgiving but the sinus came. It is horrible. Being sick and not having your mom there to take care of you is very hard. the other night I was up until 4:00 in the morning because I had a coughing attack and I didn't know what to do so of course I called my mom. Well, obviously she couldn't do anything for me but she was the first person I thought of. I went to the doctors today so hopefully the medicine will clear it up.

I finally had my first test in college. I was very nervous for it because I thought it was going to be a lot different than it was. I probably studied for about 6 hours or so and that is the longest I have ever studied for one test. The only thing about studying that long was when I looked at the questions I knew exactly what the answers were. It made it a that easier for me. I have my next test next weekend so I will probably do the same preparation for it.

Tomorrow we leave for Iowa. We have to fly there and let me just tell you how much I hate planes. They scare me more than anything. I have been on a lot of planes before and there is just something about them that I just can not stand. We leave around 11 and then when we get there we have to practice. We are going to get back around 10 sat night and our coach is trying really hard to get us into the game. I really hope she can because it is going to be awesome!

I was watching the news the other day it there was a story on about child abuse. These parents apparenly looked their daughter in a trailer for weeks and they would come in a beat her with a sledgehammar or the bottom of an ax. It really shocked me to watch this because I don't understand how a person could do this to another person. It just boggles my mind. She luckly escaped and ran to the police and at first told them that she was homeless. She was probably really scared to tell the truth. They still haven't found her parents and to know that they are on the lose is a very scary thought.

This past weekend we travled to Iowa to play a field hockey game. This was a very big game because not only are they in the Big 10 but we haven't beaten Iowa on the road in 11 years. That is a very long time. I knew in my mind though that we were going to beat them. We have a very strong team this year and we are very determined to win. Sure enough we won 4-0. It was awesome. It was probably one of the best feelings I have ever had after a game. Our coach was so proud of us. Our flight didn't get back to State College until 10:00p.m. and of course we all wanted to go to the game. So the bus picked us up from the airport drove us right to our locker rooms where we just grabbed bags and threw them in and then drove us to the stadium. We hopped out at a green light and ran to the gates. We just ran right in and got front row. It was awesome. We were able to watch the last 4 minutes of the game and then we were able to get onto the field. It was a great weekend.

Causal Argument- MyArticle

This argument is saying that this flu is causing millions of deaths and the US is not ready for the attack. They are trying to let people know that this flu is out there and that is cause you to die. It all started in Asia and the people there have suffered from it and don't want others to go through what they went through. The only reason why this wouldn't happen is if we did actually get vacines in time or if it never came over to the United States. Hopefully no one dies from this and we can find something that will cure it right away.

Causal Argument - My2ndArticle

This argument is saying if the government wants teens to be able to get the morning after pill because they feel if they do this then it will bring the abortion rate down. They want it to be a nonprescription so it is easier to get. They allow teens 16 and older to get it but they are just worried about girls that are younger. This argument is for teenage girls. Some people are worried about this because they are afraid if it is so easy to get the morning after pill then girls won't be as scared to have sexual intercourse and then there will be more diseases.

Claim: The morning after pill will cause a decrease in teen abortions.

Reasons: It will be more widely available, if they use the pill, will prevent pregnancy.

Counter-Claims: Increase abortion, increase sex, other ways of preventing abortion.

I looked at the causal argument in NikkisBlog

In this article, doctors believe that SIDS, sudden death of an infant, is caused from parents allowing their infants to sleep on their chests in their bed with them at night. By not having your child in your bed with you will lessen the risk of SID. There are other causes that may cause sudden death in infants the infant could suffocate on the pillows and other things in the crib with them while they are sleeping. This article is directed to parents of newborns.

Thesis: parents allowing their infants to sleep on their chests in bed at night causes the baby to have SIDS

Counter-Argument: Babies could suffocate on their pillows or other things in the crib

Study: 9-11 Dust Causing Health Problems

After the collaspe of the twin towers on 9/11, the air quality and pollution became a problem, especially to the people directly involved. This new study is examining the effects the particles of dust and debris had on health of those closest to where the tragic even happened. They specifically looked at the firefighers, pregnant women of the time, and their babies. Breathing and ingesting this poor air caused many health problems. Firefighers, although the research is still in its beginnings because the event was so recent, have become ill. 14,000 complain about having a cough, but it is more than that. More firefighters have complained of respitory disability than pre 9/11, and it is possible it could lead to malignancies or growths. The pregnant involved, about 300, had children who were lighter and shorter. There is no data about whether the children will have lower IQs yet. Not only the particles in the air could have affect, but the burning gas fumes. While the study may not be over, it is arlready obvious the air conditions after 9/11 have taken effect. The article was written to inform the country that there were more effects on our society then the intial ones. Everyone knows that thousands of people died, but they may not be aware of these secondary effects. The article may also be warning people who were in the area to look out for respitory or other health problems. I cannot provide anymore arguments for this article because I do not know anything about health and the effects of poor air quality. I can suggest they talk about other people as well as firefighters, because they were there as well.

Thesis: the crashing of the airplanes during 9/11 caused dust and air pollution and that also caused health problems.

Reasons: there was poor air to breathe, there was complaining of a cough, respitory disability

Counter-Arguments: other things could have caused these health problems, i don't really know if they can link it back to 9/11

Stigmergy- It was first introduced in 1959 by Pierre-Paul Grasse. It is some type of interaction between two insects that gives off a type of information. This helps to coordinate activity over a great deal of time. It showed how they corrdinate the acvtivities and that they don't depend on the workers but actually the nest. Stigmergy is very important in the fact for understanding the evolution and maintenance of sociality in animals.

Eval Arguments-MyFirstArticle

This article is talking about the difference between anitbacterial soap and just plain soap. They are saying that antibacterial soap is no different than regular soap. They both do the same thing. They are also saying that the antibacterial soap might contribute to the growth of drug-resistant bacteria. So basically regular soap is just as good as antibacterial soap, its just that people have in the minds that antibacterial soap should be better for you. I think that even though there is research that soap works just the same as antibacterial soap, there is still going to be a higher demand for antibacterial soap because people were told for such a long time that it was better and killed more germs.

Eval Arguments-MySecondArticle

When I read this article, I was very happy to read that they are finding medicines to help reduce even cure cancer. This article is particularlly about breat cancer. They have found a medicine called Herceptin. This drug targets diseased cells and helps with advanced cancer. The drug is going to save many of lives in the future to come and if they can figure it out perfectly it might end up being a cure. Cancer is a very scary disease and to hear that they are on their way to some type of cure is a miracle. They have to be careful though because they really don't know exactly when this drug works and what it works on. I think they have to do a little more research and figure out all of the details of the drug.

Plagiarism is taking someone else's work and presenting it as your own. Also, it can be when you take someone else's words or ideas and put them on your paper and pretend that they are yours.

I read on article on MSN about reopening the harbor tunnels after a terror alert. It says that it is a good idea because it helps with traffic control and reduces the amount of traffic detours despite the danger of the terror threats to blow up cars filled with explosives inside the tunnels. One very important counter-argument is that the danger may not have passed because they haven’t found the people who made the threats. Although the tunnels are very important for transportation, I think that they should take into account that the danger may still exist.

Thesis: That we should reopen the harbor tunnels after a terror alert

Why this is good: helps with traffic control, reduces the amount of traffic detours

Why this is bad: even though the tunnels open up transportation, there till might be danger in existence

My life has been very stressed lately with all of the traveling we have been doing. It is crazy. It is so much different than high school because your away games would be like 2 hours away where college they could be as far away as 14 hours. This is why I need to stay very organized with everything. Making up school work is a very big pain because there is so much to do. Along with with school work, I have to be able to play competitive field hockey games as well. I have no time to just relax. It is a completely different life than students that do not play a sport.

Have you ever heard of a deer getting a pumpkin stuck to his head? I was watching the news the other day and a story came on about a deer walking around with a pumpkin on his head. No one knows how he got this pumpkin on his head. I had to look twice before I believed it. They are really worried that the deer is going to strave to death because he runs away from humans.

Life is getting very stressful. I am starting to miss a lot of school because of big ten tournments and the end of the year play-offs. It is very hard to make up all of my work because usually on away trips I don't have any time. It is very hard to do work on the plane or one a bus because I get motion sickness. When I am in the hotel, all I want to do is sleep because of how hard my day was.

On Tuesday is when the post where we are going to play and who we are going to play for the first and second round of NCAA's. There is a possibility that we will be able to host these rounds. This would be awesome because then we don't have to travel and we can play on our home field. I am crossing my fingers but you never know. But wherever we end up, we will WIN!!

Today my parents came up to take me out to dinner. It was very nice because I am so sick of the dinning hall food. They always have the same kinds of food all of the time. Half of the time the chicken is pink. It is very gross. My mom also did my laundry which was very nice because I never feel like doing that. I haven't seen my mom in awhile because she coaches field hockey for my high school and she can't get to all of my games so it was nice to see her.

This weekend we went to Maryland to play in the NCAA tournament. Our first round was againt American University. It was a great game but we ended up losing 3-2. It was horrible. This game ended our season. Now field hockey is over and I have to be a normal college student for awhile. I am very upset about this becasue I loved going to practice and spending so much time with the team. Hopefully next year we can go to the final four because that will be awesome.

I was able to go home last weekend of the first time. Let me tell you it was so weird. Being home around high schoolers is very different than being around college students every day. We are building a new house so I didn't even go home to the house that I have lived in since I was about 6 years old. We are currently living in a town house right now while our house is being built and it is quite different. I was really happy to see my dog. All is all it was very nice to go and just relax.

After reading the newspaper about the 18 year old boy who killed a 14 year old girls parents really made me think about things. The reason I was told that he killed her parents was because her curfue was too early. First of all, I have no idea why an 18 year old boy would want to date or hang out with a 14 year old girl in the first place. But the thought of him killing two people over something like this is distrubing. There are some crazy people out in the world and this kind of stuff could happen to anyone.

Today was a very relaxing day. I had classes in the morning and then my best friend Jen decided to get her hair hightlighted and cut. We went to le salon and spa which was a very nice place. The color of her hair turned out great but she doesn't really like the way it is cut. But hair grows back so its ok. We had lunch at the corner room and talked for awhile and then shopped downtown. It was nice to just have a day where I didn't have to worry about going to practice or lifting. Hopefully there will be many more of these days in the future.

So did you know that 5 fall sports teams won the Big Ten Championship. These sports are field hockey, mens and womens soccer, womens volleyball, and football. That is pretty impressive if you ask me. I think this is some sort of record. To be this successful is athletics is unbelievalbe. I just want to congratulate everyone that is part of these sports. It is quite an honor.

After the football team won the Big Ten Championship against Michigan State they flew home to their fellow students at Rec Hall. At 8 pm the womens volleyball team had a match agaisnt Iowa. They beat them 3-0. Then we had to wait there for about an hour and a half for the football team to arrive. In the mean time the dance team performed and the cheerleaders were there. It was like a pep rally. It was so much fun because there was so much school spirit in one building. It was awesome. When the football team arrived, everyone went crazy. Joe Pa talked and everyone was chanting his name. He was so cute. Everyone swarmed him. It was a really great night!

Wow my thanksgiving break was awesome. It was so nice to be able to not have to worry about doing anything. It was very nice to eat home cooked meals because I was really getting sick of eating the dining hall food. I was able to spend a lot of time with my boyfriend and my puppy. She was so cute. I took her to get her hair cut so that was fun. I bought her all new toys and bones. She loved them. I went shopping with my parents and got some new clothes. It was a very relaxing break.

Today was a very hard day for me. We had to start our conditioning for field hockey. Usually we don't start until after Christmas break. So we have to workout for the next two weeks and then we will have off until after break. The only thing good about it is that it forces me to work out. I am not a fan of running so I usually don't do it on my own. This way I can stay inshape. We also had to lift after we were done. That wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

It is very fasinating what happens to people in the world. There were stoires on Maury where animals attacked human beings. There was a man that lost his eye socket and some of his skulls. It is amazing that these people are still alive. It just goes to show that you have to be thankful for what you have because something like this could happen to anyone. Your life could be changed in a matter of seconds. It was very scary to see.

So the days are winding for the semester to be over. I just can't believe it. It went so fast. I can still remember when I looked into my dorm room and thought to myself how in the world am I going to fit all of my stuff in here. It seems like yesterday. But times goes on and soon I am going to be taking my first college finals. I am still shocked that I am in college. I just hope I do really well this semester so I get off to a good start.

I was reading in the newspaper today that the College Cup for women's soccer is going to be broadcasted on ESPN2 and ESPNU. I think this is awesome. It isn't always that women's sports in broadcasted live television. This is really a step into the right direction for women's sports. This will help it become broader. I am definietly going to watch it and support them because I really want them to win the NCCA championship. They have came so close and this year their season is awesome. So they really deserve this.

So my heat doesn't work in the room because when you turn it on the radiator leaks and it turns into a huge puddle on the floor. Last night I was trying to do my work and it was so cold that I couldn't feel my fingers. I was sitting at my desk for about 2 hours and I got up and my joints hurt. It was horrible. So I finally called the heat people and they weren't going to come because it was past office hours but I told them it was about 20 degrees in my room. So they decided to have someon come. But the bad thing is I left my room so I am hoping my roommate stayed and the guy came.

So I am sitting in study hall trying to waste time so I can have enough study hall hours for the week. It is very boring when I don't have any work to do. Study hall is worthwhile but not today. The past two days I was in here working really hard trying to get all of my work done for the week which I did. It was great. It was funny though because the monitor just yelled at my friend because she was yelling what was for dinner tonight. It was great.

On top of all of my schoolwork, I have to lift twice a week and do cardio. I really like this because it keeps me in shape and then I can really eat anything I want to. When I don't workout, I feel horrible because my body is so used to working out and be active all of the time. I can see an improvement in the past week and a half and that really makes me happy.

Today all of the freshman are going to Wal-Mart to get ready for our big night tomorrow night. The juniors are having a Christmas party and its also rookie night. I have to dress up like Rudolph and the other girls have to dress up like santa, mrs. clause, dancer and prancer. We have no idea what the night is going to be like but it is going to be so much fun. It will definetely be a night to remember.
