Personal Narrative

My name is Timothy. I was born in Bangalore, India lived there for eight years. That was followed by a move to Dubai, U.A.E for one year, then a move to Toronto, Canada for five years and finally finished my high school back in Dubai. I like to travel a lot, play basketball, listen to music, read novels, and just generally have a good time. I aim to graduate with a computer science degree, and then take a nice long break so I can travel the world, before surrendering myself to a job or further studies.

A Response to Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail

There are many pieces of literature that leave you grappling with a thought, or just leave you wanting more, and this letter is certainly among them. Martin Luther King states his point and then ties it neatly with a through provoking quote or idea that flows with what he is currently addressing. Adding to that is a calm that comes through in his writing along with words that display conviction and strong belief. These are remarkable writing skills that really come through in a time of great social tension. I especially liked Martin Luther King's ability to turn the negative labels placed upon him into more positive symbols gives hope to all of the people suffering during those times. After stating all of the above, I agree with Martin Luther King’s non-violent approach to tackle a very delicate situation. This is particularly commendable since the opposition doesn’t seem to hesitate in the use of violence, and it takes a great character to stay the hand of retaliation, and it is this character we see portrayed in this letter by Martin Luther King.

Rewritten Personal Narrative

Hi my name is Timothy Thakker. I was born in Bangalore, my mom is Irish, and my dad is Indian. When people ask me what I consider myself I reply Canadian because it is my country of citizenship, but in reality I would say I am a truly "International" student. My family moved to Canada when I was about 9 years old and I lived there till I was through with middle school. I had a tough first eight in India, and I consider myself blessed to be where I'm at today. Many of my friends from high school in Dubai however did make it to US universities with strong grades, and equally strong financial backing. So far Penn State has been everything I could ask for. My major is Computer Science and my goal is to someday have my own software company.

USA Today Snapshot

When asked who should pick up the check on the first date, 42% of America said that men should pay, 34% said the person who arranged the date, 17% said it should be split and 0% said that women should pay. This is a good question and I think that the answer is pretty clear to guys; it is an unwritten and unspoken law. So it is safe to say that most guys pay on the first date, and since more guys ask girls on dates that 34% should also be added to the 42%. It could also be that since women are paid less they have less spending money, therefore they would rather have the men pay on the date. My last possibility could be that women would like to see how much a guy tips, and if he is financially strong... (Well the last few I was really stretching it). Personally I believe that a guy should pay on the first day simply because of the first two claims I've stated and because of the "unwritten and unspoken law".
