Evaluation Paper Proposal

Once a human egg is fertilized by a human sperm, a human is created. At this time, the individual that is growing inside of the mother has its own unique genetic identity. This embryo will develop into nothing other than a human being and should have the same rights that a normal human does. Just because it is not out of the womb and cannot function on its own does not mean that you have the right to kill it if you feel like it. It is just as innocent and vulnerable as a baby that is in infancy. Killing an infant is a crime and abortion should be one too. The only reason to get an abortion is if the mother’s life is immediately in jeopardy. In no other case will there ever be justification of abortion. The future lives of individuals are at stake here and all humans should be given the right to live.

This seems to be headed in the direction of a definition paper. To change it, make the thesis something like the following: abortion is wrong. Now what you'll need to do is be very clear on the criteria you'll be using. Perhaps getting clear on the audience would help. If you were to write to Christians, for example, you might have certain religious arguments that would be persuasive. Even so, however, not all (even Christians) would agree that abortion should be prohibited. What you need to figure out is why. It's not simply because they're misinformed or straightforwardly wrong. It's because they have different standards and weigh them differently. Think about what those are and why you weigh the standards as you do. TheKemBlog

I think that Wayne Gretzky is in is a horrible situation. No matter what he says or what he does, the public opinion of him will be bad. The fact that his wife was betting $75,000 on the super bowl and winning $5,000 on the coin toss obviously means that she wasn’t using grocery money. Wayne Gretzky may have known about her betting, but regardless, I believe that he should be left alone. This has happened at the most inopportune time. He has to coach the Canadian hockey team in Turin with international media pressure. Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player to ever walk on Earth and I will always have the utmost respect for him.

2/14/06 Response to The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence is one of America’s most coveted documents, and rightfully so. This fine piece of writing clearly outlines all of the reasons why America should be separate from Britain. These grievances prove that Britain is going against its own beliefs, even though America was a part of Britain at the time. This document, in a way unified, America against Britain. It is a document that represents our freedom from Britain.

Shaun White is unstoppable. He took two gold medals in the 2006 Winter X Games in slope style and the half-pipe. As he made his runs in Turin, he came out with the gold medal in the half-pipe competition. No one in the world can stop him. He has ridden his way into the record books where he will stay forever. He is only 19 years old and he is on top of his game. Shaun White is here to stay and has changed the world of snowboarding forever.

Tonight was very frustrating. After making a late start, I went to the bus stop on College Ave. waiting for the 10:55PM N bus. It was taking us to State College Park apartments. After waiting over an hour, the bus finally arrived. I went to an apartment party which was sweet and then had to leave at 2 to catch the only bus back to campus. As I left the party, my roommate and I saw a shopping cart in the parking lot. I hopped in and my roommate began to push me down the hill, weaving through cars and going around turns. It was awesome. I was skidding all over the place and having a good time. As I reached the staircase where I needed to go down in order to catch the bus, I hear something behind me. I turn around only to see State College’s finest in a lovely Dodge Intrepid. As I stared at the cop car, with my life flashing before my eyes, the cop stuck his hand out of the window and motioned for me to come to him. I casually approach the car, butterflies in my stomach and the cop asked me what I was doing. My roommate ran away from the cop, and I thought that the cop had seen him, but I said nothing. I told the cop that I was just playing around with the shopping cart. He told me, “You know what you can do? Just bring it back to Giant.” Surprised as all hell that I hadn’t gotten an underage, I ran as fast as I could to Giant with the shopping cart. As it turns out, my roommate thought the cop was chasing him. Apparently the cop shined a flashlight on him and was tracking his every move. Long story short, he hopped and air conditioner, cut his knee really badly, lost the jacket he was wearing, and barely made the bus. It was a crazy, lucky night for the both of us.

Definition Paper Proposal

2/6/06

Where is the boundary between an ordinary crime and a hate crime? The definition of hate crimes vary greatly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. I believe that there should be a federal “definition” of a hate crime. Why should some people be punished less for committing the same crime, just because they live in different places? A hate crime is a crime committed that is intended to hurt someone’s character. This places hate crimes in a whole other category from other crimes. In order to defend victims from hate crimes, we must first define all aspects of the hate crimes. All hate crime laws include crimes based on the prejudice against race, color, religion, or national origin. There are only 18 states along with the District of Columbia that have made laws against hate crimes towards homosexuals or bisexuals. So what exactly is a hate crime if it is not universally known? In a study of 113 young adult volunteers, many subjects said that they thought a hate crime involved an attack against members of a certain demographic. Hate crimes have been rampant all over America and they are in the media all too often. America has sympathized with victims and their families because of the heinous crimes that have been committed against them for no other reason than race, religion, or sexual orientation. It’s this omnipresent prejudice that certain humans hold against others that is what sparks these hate crimes. It is an aspect of human nature that will always be fought against by the law officials for ages to come until something is done by the US government to stop these potentially epidemic outbreaks of hate towards the citizens of America.

Response to Definition Paper Proposal

Claim: A hate crime is a crime intended to hurt someone’s character.

Reasons: Hate crimes are committed against people of different race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Counter argument:

1. If someone commits a crime against someone of another race, it is not necessarily racially motivated.

The beginning of the proposal comes off as you proposing the government adopt a definition. As long as you stick to what the definition is, and not that there should be a definition, you should be good. TheDrizzle

Responce To Definition Paper

I think that this is a very good idea for a paper and i would definately be interested in reading your final copy. A good counter arguement that you should watch out for is the fact that not all crimes against diffrent races are hate crimes. I remember once hearing that if i was beating the crap out of a Homosexual it wasnt exactly a hate crime unless I said something while I was doing it that made it obvious I was doing it because he was gay. To me that sounds like total crap but it is something to look into.

Response to NY Times article

The topic that I found most interesting was in the New York Times entitled “Really? The Claim: Baby deliveries are in sync with the moon,” and was published on January 31, 2006. It involved a study about a possible link between childbirth and the lunar cycle. The moon has been looked at as a symbol of fertility. A study by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology examined 564,000 births across 62 lunar cycles in North Carolina between 1997 and 2001. The study showed that there was no predictable influence on deliveries or birth complications at all. The only trend that was found with births was that the majority of them occurred in the summer and in September and October. This is the only possible explanation of cyclic fertility in humans in the United States. I find that this study was pointless because there is no way that the magnetic pull of the moon can have an effect on human births.

Response to Wikipedia's article on the definition of terrorism

Terrorism is a very loose term these days. There are so many ways to commit terrorist acts that one word could not cover the whole concept. This is why newspapers and other types of media are starting to avoid using the word terrorism and being more specific about radical groups and their actions in their news stories. Since this article in Wikipedia continas many versions of the definition, it shows that everything is an argument, which is the title of our textbook.

Response to President George W. Bush's Address to Congress (2001)

George W. Bush delivered a powerful speech to the American people in a time of dire need. His arguments touched everyone who listened. His confidence throughout his speech was vital in portraying the message that he did. His confidence, in turn, made us confident and assured us that, “whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done.” I think the quote that struck me most was when President Bush said, “We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail.” President Bush’s speech unified Americans and raised their trust in the United States government. There was nothing like the patriotism that everyone in America was expressing after these attacks. President Bush’s speech did its job in sparking patriotism and telling us that justice would be served to the terrorists that attacked our country.

Response to the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights

I believe the nations that collaborated on the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” had the right motives in writing such a declaration. I feel that they wrote this to declare to the world how humans should be treated and what their rights should be. However, it is sad how there are still countries that have not adopted such policies and values for their people. I believe that there should be more worldwide enforcement of basic human rights. I know that such a task is almost impossible to accomplish, but it has been almost 60 years from the writing of this and human rights is still a big enough issue to be talked about today.

Response to FDR's "Four Freedoms" Speech

I think Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s freedom speech was excellent. He used every word in his speech knowing exactly what he wanted to accomplish. I learned a great deal from FDR’s speech about the desperate and fearful times that America was going through. Mentioning his strive for the freedom from fear is exactly what America needed to hear. I was surprised to see how everything in FDR’s state of the union address was so relevant to today. I found it almost parallel to the present when he said, “We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests.” I felt that he reassured the American population of how hard his administration was working to protect America from all sources of threats against it. This speech outlined everything that FDR stands for and what he was willing to do as the president for the people of the United States of America.

Response to Question #2 on Page 117

I chose the USA Today Snapshot about people's luck at casino gambling. 43% of people going to casinos lost more than they won. 33% of people came out even and 20% won more than they lost.

Claim 1: People that go to casinos are bad at gambling because 77% of the time, they don't win any money.

Claim 2: Casinos are very good at making money because they give people small chances of winning.

Claim 3: People have a good chance of winning money in a casino because more than half of the time that they go, they either break even or win more than they lost.

Revision of JeNeSaisQuoi's Personal Narrative

I had a successful four years in high school with great friends, good grades, and a position on the varsity baseball and soccer teams. Upon graduation I decided to attend Penn State University with a major in pre-medicine. I had the summer of my life working as a lifeguard and hanging out with all of my best friends. I am so happy that I chose Penn State and I cannot imagine myself anywhere else but in Happy Valley.

Response to "Letter From A Birmingham Jail"

After reading Martin Luther King’s letter from Birmingham Jail, I find it very hard to disagree with him. Every claim that he was making had more than sufficient evidence backing it up. He writes very well and has clear thoughts that allow for his viewpoint to be understood by everyone. The most powerful argument to me was when he mentioned segregation laws being voted on by Alabama government officials. These officials were voted in by a mostly white voting population which was a great injustice to the African-American population at the time because the government was mainly a democracy for white people. I think Martin Luther King fulfilled his duty to do what was morally right and that he is a great man for his perseverance.

Personal Narrative

My name is Eric Maniere and I am from West Windsor, New Jersey. I am 18 years old and I am majoring in pre-medicine. I am a freshman living in Pollock. I’m a very active person and I’m always up for anything. In the winter time I like to go snowboarding. Even though there are not that many ski resorts near me, I don’t let that get me down. Occasionally I take trips to Vermont which gives me a better taste of what snowboarding is. Overall, I love playing sports and having a good time.
