Hey everyone! My name is Christine Salmon and this is my first time ever doing a blog. I'm from Brick, NJ, and love the beach. I live 10 minutes away from Pt. Pleasant and 20 minutes from Seaside Heights. Surfing, cheeleading, and softball are my main hobbies, but I absolutely love college football. My current major is criminal justice, but i have a feeling it might change to political science in the near future. So far I love everything about PSU and can't wait until Saturday for our first home football game. I've cheered for 13 years, which means I started at age 5, and continued through my senior year of high school on both my high school team and my all-star team. In the past two years, I won six national cheerleading championships all over the country with my all-star team, and was going to cheer for Penn State when I realized it was five days a week for two or three hours. So now I plan on playing club softball and going riding all winter long when the big storms hit State College :) I'm new to this whole blog thing, so if anyone has any tips for me, I'll appreciate it!

-Christine

This weekend was amazing. The girls and I went to the football game all decked out in our jerseys, face paint, ribbon, paw tattoes, and stickers; it was so much fun. Then, after the game, which really made my weekend amazing, was that my boyfriend came out here for the weekend from home to come see me. Although it was only a week and a half since I said goodbye, I still got the butterflies in my stomache the moment I saw his face. Anyway, enough of the lovey dovey stuff. The football game made me realize just how much I love it here at Penn State. Yes, I miss home, but there's nothing like a better home then here at PSU. Don't get me wrong, I will probably make a few trips homeward bound in the near future, but for right now I am enjoying myself. I am hungry, so I am going to eat now. Cya all Wednesday :)

Today basically sucked. To sum it up, the past few days my computer has been really weird and not functioning normally. The screen would turn blue after 15 minutes, so I would have to try to turn it off-of course it wouldn't so I had to take out the battery and restart it. Anyway, today after my day was done at 11, my computer screen was black and said that windows couldn't operate. So I wound up on the phone with Dell Gold Technical Support for 2 hours fixing my computer. I had to delete the entire thing, re-install windows, etc., and finally download new antivirus software. Besides that, nothing great happened . This weekend I am going home and can't wait for my high school's Friday night football game. Being a cheerleader all my life, it's no wonder why I'm stoked to go home to see my friends who didn't go away to school and my boyfriend who is a high prospect WR (and yes, I know he's younger than me). Anyway, hopefully the week goes by fast...

Well today is hump day, thank goodness--the weeks' almost over!! I am so tired I guess I am still not used to this whole college thing-staying out till 3 in the morning on the weekends and then getting up for classes at 8 or 9. But anyway, I sold my Cincinnati ticket for this weekend because I am definitely going home. Can't wait for Friday I am so excited it's ridiculous!! Hopefully PSU wins this weekend, but if they play like they played last Saturday it's going to be a much closer game since they are playing a better team. Anyway, I just woke up from a nap, ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and when I digest I'm hitting up the gym. What a fun day huh? Can't wait to drive this weekend and blast my music, haha yes it's going to be awesome. I'm out of here, until next time wiki....you stay classy San Diego

One more day and home sweet home!! Can't wait. Anyway, my classes are over for the day and it's such a relief to just do nothing all day. It's so weird that the 2nd week of classes is almost over; seems as though we've been here a while considering how comfortable I am. Today in my PopMedia class we watched a clip from Rushhour, which woke me up at 8, and then we watched a Bugs Bunny cartoon. That class is awesome I love it. Hoepfully I do well in it too. Then I went to my Human Development class which sucked. My professor wasn't there because she had an unexpected doctors appointment so we had this substitute who taught the course as well. But it was horrible, nothing like my real professor. We took practically 10 pages of notes off power point for over an hour. I wanted to shoot myself lol. Anyway, I'm tired I didn't go to bed until after 12 last night and had to wake up at 7, so I'm going to go take a nap. Hope everyone has fun doing their final narratives. I have to do mine today because I am GOING HOME TOMORROW!!! haha yes I can't wait. Cya late...

Last night I finished my final narrative and right now I am packing to go home. My parents should be here in a half hour, and then home sweet home!! I am so excited. However, there was one thing that bothered me today, and that was when Kem mentioned that the UK approved human cloning. Advancing science in such a way directly conflicts with the Roman Catholic church, continuing the war between the sciences and religion. This confict has been an ongoing argument for over 500 years and we see this in Dan Brown's novel, Angels and Demons. By reading his novel, it gives you a sense that you can in fact overlap the two and create some sort of compromose. However, that doesn't mean that it is stil OK to clone human beings. By no means should science use embryos from abortions, but rather miscarriages if it is approved. Although I do not agree to cloning and/or stem cell research, I still think that if science is advancing in such a way, that the world as we know is about to change drastically.

>>Christine, as you note, the relationship between faith and reason is an ongoing theme in Catholicism. Note that the church has maintained for some time that no conflict exists between the two. I wonder what the cloning of humans does for that equation. Will the religion need to change, or will it need to combat what it understands to be immoral uses of science? TheKemBlog

Sept. 11, 2005

Today was the 4 year anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; talk about a sad day. I can still remember sitting in freshman history watching the news thinking it was a movie. I knew right when I saw the second plane hit the tower that my dad was going to get called in to the fire house in Jersey City. I didn't talk to my dad for three days after that, and that was by far the scariest thing in my life. My dad is the captain of the Jersey City Fire Department and had to go into the PathTrain tunnels below the WTC to look for survivors. Any second those tunnels were capable of collasping, but my dad knew that looking for survivors was more important than his own life at that point. Ironically, it was a gorgeous day with not a single cloud in the sky. What was even more eerie is that there wasn't a single plane in the sky, when there would have been about ten. Not to mention that at the time of my mom getting me out of school, my dad was in the city and didn't know where the last two planes were so authorities thought a good target for the hijacked planes were big schools and universities. It was the scariest day of my life glued to the TV waiting for news on any survivors and/or new terrorist plots. I still can't believe that those were the first attacks on American soil, and from them we are still at war; this world is getting crazy and hopefully one day everyhting will get resolved...

Sept. 12, 2005

School today sucked. I was so tired, especially for this class. Next time I have an early morning class I am drinking at least two cups of tea before I go. I just finished getting together a package for my boyfriend and now I am about to go do some math homework-what fun! There are like 65 questions and then I have to take a quiz to top it off. So PSU won this weekend, pretty sick. Too bad I wasn't here but it was well worth the trip home. The look on Mike's face, my boyfriend, was priceless and I loved every second of it. It's so good to know that someone loves you just as much as you love them. Besides that, my day was long and tiring and I need to go sleep. So goodnight Penn Staters, see you all on Wednesday!

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Sept. 13, 2005

Another day at PSU. I can't stand getting up at 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays; it's horrible. There is no way I am taking an 8 am next semester. Anyway, today in the paper I read that they are making a movie based on The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown and it's stirring up quite a controversy. I think the movie would be awesome considering it's only for entertainment and not other religious purposes. People have been protesting it but I think it will be a blockbuster hit when it's released. It's a great book and the movie is either going to play it up or make the book seem like it sucked. But all in all it should be an interesting movie to watch and see what the critics have to say about it. I'm off to the gym..cya tomorrow

Sept. 14, 2005

Counter-arguments huh? If you ask me, everything has a counter-argument because everyone has their own opinions and beliefs. Yes, I may be a little quiet in class but that's only due to the lack of caffeine I have in the morning. For instance, knowledge?? Depending on how you want to use the word there can be a million definitions, including the ones we discussed in class. There are so many words that are questionable that we don't stop to think what the definition can really be. This whole word analysis is all just brought up because we need to demonstrate counter-arguments. So pretty much if you have your own opinions, the discussions we have in class can go on forever! Ok-enough I'm going out, cya Friday... :o)

Sept. 15, 2005

So how about those 75 pages we're reading for tomorrow's class? It is so hot in my room right now I can't take it. Anyway, I read in the paper today that the field hockey coach had her 300th career win at Penn State, good for her; that's a lot of wins. I also read about the Katrina relief in Louisiana and how they are attempting to arrest people who didn't evacuate in time. By doing this, they are cutting down on the people who caused such a high death toll, especially those who owned nursing homes or community living residences. Kind of weird how the law is going to crack down at such a tragic time. That's life for ya. Going to the gym...cya tomorrow

Sept. 16, 2005

Penn State v. Central Michigan--should be fun tomorrow. I gotta admit, I hate playing teams that aren't even ranked nationally, including PSU haha. Anyway, with this definitional argument we have to write for Monday, it's a little sketchy to me. I'm not exactly sure how I want to write it yet, or how to write it for that matter, but we'll see. If anyone has good ideas about a word, that'd be great. Finally Friday, YES!!! Third week of school is already over, kind of weird; seems like it's going by so fast already. Next thing you know it's going to be Halloween, then Thanksgiving, and then winter break. So pumped, but I'm getting ahead of myself. It's still September--byeee

Sept. 17, 2005

Penn State defeats Central Michigan 40-3! 3-0 baby...the game was pretty good today, Mike Robinson had some sick throws today. I can't wait until the Ohio State and Wisconsin game--they are going to be the best games this season. My best friend, Garrett, plays for the badgers but it redshirted this year and it's going to be so great to see him and all of our friends that our coming out to that game. My family, my best friend's family, my boyfriend's family, and my whole town is coming to that game and I'm so excited!! I'm starting to write my paper because tomorrow I am very busy, so until then--WE ARE...PENN STATE! LET'S GO STATE CYA!

Sept 20, 2005

So I finished my draft early yesterday and had to study for my HDFS129 exam today; hopefully I did well. No football this weekend because it's parents weekend, but it should be a good weekend. Rush has been so tiring the past three days that I'm exhausted and need to sleep. With the revising of the drafts, I'm a little confused about how to do that. But anyway, the patriots lost to the panthers Sunday; what an upset. I didn't see that coming at all. And the Giants won yesterday against the saints which was expected...can't wait until next Sunday and Monday night football! Cya

Sept. 22, 2005

Today was my worst day here at Penn State. I didn't do so great on my first exam which made me really upset, and to top it off I found out that I can't go home until Oct. 12, which sucks because I really miss my boyfriend. I've been crying all day and it was just a bad one. Anyway, I have so much homework to do, getting adjusted to college is actually harder than I thought. A lot of my friends are out right now, but I was smart ;) HA and chose not to go out so I can catch up on doing some stuff. To be honest, I didn't do one thing yet but I plan on it very shortly haha. This weekend is going to be busy--I have to finish rush and study for exams!! Shoot me now lol--class tomorrow should be fun with revising our papers--goodnight everyone...LETS GO STATE!!

Sept. 25, 2005

SUNDAY FOOTBALL!!! I'm watching the falcon game right now, so far they are winning by one 17-16 against the bills in the 3rd. Then at four the patriots play and I can't wait until that game. Yesterday we beat Northwstern in the last minute of the game, talk about pressure on Derek Williams, he had a sick catch! Anyway, there's a lot in the news about gasoline prices going up because of the damage of Hurricane Rita. Unfortunately, that means that airplane tickets go up, bus fare, and train tickets are getting really expensive. Trying to commute is becoming a hassle and people are going to start to boycott because of the increase in fare. Good thing I don't have a car here, but when I go home in two weeks it's going to cost a lot more than my parents expected. Oh well, cya in class..

Sept. 26, 2005

I hate the rain when I'm not sleeping! Plus, I left before the rain this morning to go to class so I didn't have an umbrella, stinks. Good thing it wasn't downpouring, otherwise I would have been soaked. Since the hurricane, 1.8 million barrels of oil a day have been shut down in Texas and Louisiana but will soon be back on line and that until then, President Bush has been encouraging energy conservation by carpooling and using mass transit. Like I said yesterday, we are slowly starting to realize that we are losing our natural resources, whether it be from natural disasters such as hurricanes, or that we are simply past our population capacity.

How to do a toe touch...

Keep your head up and your back straight starting with feet together.

Then, place your hands in a high V for your prep. You should place your arms above your hand with your fists clenched turning them outwards. To make sure you are doing a proper high V, you should be able to see a straight diagonal line from your shoulders to your hands feeling your biceps flexed.

Now, swing your arms crossing them in front of you while you slightly bend your legs and jump, lifting your arms back to a T in front of you. You should rotate your hips pointing your knees towards the ceiling, rather then pointing them inwards (by this, your legs will get higher).

Don't reach for your feet, instead try to bring your legs up to your hands.

You don't actually want to touch your toes.Your hands should be about where the arch of your foot is.

Point your toes.

Snap your legs down with as much force as you brought them up with.

Land with a slight bend in you knees.

Work on building up the strength in your arms, shoulders, abs and legs.

Work on all aspects of the jump: prep, lift, execution and landing.

Practice, practice, practice.

So the polar ice caps are slowly melting because of global warming. The ice caps in the north pole are melting predicting a 50 year extinction rate for polar bears. Also, since the ice isn't there to reflect the heat back up into the atmosphere, the dark water is just going to absord the heat causing higher temperatures as well. Pretty soon they say the ice caps will be completely melted, as soon 2100. A lot of people don't believe in global warming but as years go by, evidence is provided only to support the idea of global warming and gives examples of where and why our average climate is steadily increasing.

Today it was pouring at 7:30 am and I've found out just how cold it could get here. If I consider today freezing, then what am I going to think when it starts to snow?? Anyway, I'm going home tomorrow to see my brothers because they flew in from LA; I'm so excited to see them, my family, and my boyfriend :)!! Oh, I accepted Pi Beta Phi's bid so now I'm a part of the Pi Beta Phi Fall Pledge Class 2005--wooooo!! Ok, laundry should be done, see you all bright and early.

I haven't posted a blog in a while, I've just been so busy with schoolwork and everything. But I've got to admit, I'm impressed with PSU's performance Saturday against Minnesota, not going to lie I thought they were going to lose. This Saturday is going to be crazy, Ohio State is ranked 4th in the nation. I can't wait. it's going to be such a good game I am seriously so excited. So, the gas prices are still up and Bush doesnt know if they are going to go down anytime soon, I guess global warming is more serious then we thought. Dinner time, see you all tomorrow :)

BRING ON THE BUCKEYES!! I am so excited for Saturday night's game its unbelievable. It's going to be tough, but regardless of the outcome the game should be amazing. Considering Ohio State is No. 16 in the nation, we should assume that we are going to see some big plays by their offense, whereas our defense needs to step it up a notch do shut it down. Also, I give a lot of credit to the campers at Paternoville they are crazy, waiting at the gates since Sunday night HA you would never see me do that. Plus, they lucked out because the four freshman went there to sign autographs, so did Mike Robinson as well as Joe Paterno himself. Not bad for a few die hard fans. Ok, see you all tomorrow :o)

Causal Argument: Not getting enough sleep may cause some older women to gain weight.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Oct. 13, 2005

Ok, my last causal argument was completely wrong so hopefully this one is better:

Argument: Not sleeping enough causes young adults to eat more and gain weight.

Many students stay up late either to study, watch TV, or the most common reason, to party. However, some don't see the effects of not sleeping enough during the night. "Don't gain the freshman 15" is what all of our friends have said before we went away to college, and of course that is the last thing we want to do. But not knowing we are gaining weight is the problem, and it all starts with the amount of sleep we get each night. When we don't sleep enough, our metabolism slows causing us to eat more, especially at the wrong times. So, by not getting enough sleep-it causes many students and young adults to gain unessasary weight.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Oct. 14, 2005

Causal Argument: Being addicted to AIM causes students to procrastinate.

By being on AIM all day, every day-causes students to sit on their butts and do nothing but talk to their friends and check people's away messages rather then doing their homework. Since being on Instant Messenger distracts students from what they are really supposed to be doing, instead of more important things, like their homework, inevitably causes procrastination.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Remix of Stigmergy:

In 1959, French biologist Pierre-Paul Grassé introduced the term stigmergy,"stimulation of workers by the performance they have achieved," to refer to termite behavior. It's a method of communication in emergent systems in which the individual parts of the system communicate with one another by modifying their local environment. For example, ants communicate with one another by laying down pheromones along their trails, so where ants go within and around their ant colony is basically a stigmergic system. Also, with termites, they use pheromones to build their very complex nests by following a simple decentralized rule set. This term doesn't only apply to insects and their enviroment, but also to everyday things, most commonly the internet. One person leaves an idea on a website or blog, then other people reply and post it, creating a complex website, almost like a message board. So, stigmergy is basically a broad term that not only describes insect behavior, but a variety of other things such as robots or artificial intelligence.

Plagiarism..

Plagiarism is a piece of work that has been copied from someone else and has been presented as being your own work. In other words, it's taking credit for someone else's work without citing it. Nowadays, it's so easy to plagiarize without even knowing it because of how many times something was remixed or if you put it into your own words, students tend to forget that the idea or concept still was somone elses and needs to be cited. So make sure to cite everything in a paper, just in case. :o)

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Evaluative Argument:

Psychologists sometimes say that children watching violence on TV causes aggressive behavior. The reason is that today most children watch more TV then spending time on their homework. If TV is watched consistently it can cause children to begin to lose their sense of reality and fantasize about their own aggressive behavior. Exposure children have to violence leads to aggresive behavior or emotional behavior. Plus, the earlier the age of onset of behavior problems, the greater the chance of adult antisocial behavior. So, the amount of exposure a child has to violence directly correlates with agressive behavior. However, a counter argument would be that you can get things out of watching TV, such as enhanced vocabulary or spatial skills.

SNOWING!! WOW in October I'm really not used to this at all. NOt to mention I'm so sck and I have to walk to the infermery in the snow. Ugh, I just want to sleep. Anyway, going home was awesome. All my friends came home it was sorta like a mini reunion and I loved it. Now, we're back at school and once again, I'm sad because I miss my boyfriend!! AHH but it's ok he'll be here Nov. 5 for the Wisconsin game. He's getting recruited by both us and Wisconsin, so I'm only going to see him for a day but that's good enough. Ok, I don't feel good at all. Bye bye...

________________________________________________________________________________

Another day at PSU. This weekend is HOMECOMING WOOHOO. I'm excited because I'm making the float with BETA and our weeklong is with them too. So, every night I'll be busy, but it sucks because I'm still sick :( Our theme is the Circus, but we just found out that we did the wrong theme and we were supposed to do a Safari theme so we're disqualified haha. Oh well, Purdue this weekend huh? Friday is Kanye West and the Parade, Saturday s the game, and the WHOLE weekend is Halloween weekend...this week is going to be out of control. Ok, I'm going to take a nap I dont feel good, byebye...

__________________________________________________________________________________

Finally Friday!!! Tonight is the parade and Kanye and I cannot wait to see the show. The parade should be good and the show should be even better. SO glad it's the weekend I really need a break from all my classes. I have to go guard my float in a little bit, watch the parade, and then hit up Kanye at the BJC at 9. SO pretty much my day is packed and I still don't feel that great so I'm going to take a quick nap, shower, and start my weekend. Cya Monday!!!!

____________________________________________________________________________________

And it's Monday again. Only four more weeks of class WOOHOOOO!!! It's really nce out, I love this kind of weather. It's only a matter of time before it gets freezing around here and it starts to snow on a daily basis. Anyway, this weekend my best friend AND boyfriend are coming here I absolutely cannot wait!! Friday night Mike, my boyfriend, is meeting with the Wisconsin coaches because he is getting recruited by them for football, and Saturday morning he's having breakfast with our team because he is also gettong recruited by us for wide receiver. SO basically I won't see him until during the game, if he's allowed to leave the sidelines, or after, which sucks but it's still good I get to see him for at least a day. Oh but I'm so excited I just want this week to be over with so Friday can get here! Ok, I gotta read...bye bye Cya Wednesday!!

WISCONSIN who? LOL I was so excited that we beat the badgers, I sure do hate them. It was such a good game, hopefully we beat Michigan State and go to a bowl game that would be amazing. Only two more weeks until Thanksgiving, I can't wait to eat turkey and stuffng and all of my mom's homecooked meals; I'm craving a nice home cooked meal. Then, after we get back from Thanksgiving only three more weeks left in the semester. Wow, first semester flew by, before you know it we're going to be home for winter break!! Gotta go, bye bye

Thanksgiving break was just a tease. I think I'm more homesick now then I was when I first came here. But in like two weeks we're done for the semester I can't wait!! Thanksgiving food was amazing, I was looking forward to dinner all semster lol. I had probably about 3 meals that's how good it was, gotta love those sweet potatoes hmmmm. Anyway, these next two weeks I'm going to be so busy. I have to write this 10 page paper, an 8 page story about King ARthur, and study for 3 exams AHHH I can't handle it. I just can't wait for December 14! See you all tomorrow morning.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Ok I HATE the wiki. I've been trying to post blogs for the past week and the password never worked for me. And today, finally, it has I'm so annoyed. So finals are killing me, I just can't stand them. I just want to go home please!! Anyway, I'm excited for Kem that he's getting married in Vegas, he's going to have such a good time. I'm glad the semester is over I need to go home and relax and spend time with my family and all my friends, wow I can't wait! It's going to be nuts.

_________________________________________________________________________________

So I only have two exams this week and that's about the only thing that is making me happy right about now. I have to pack up my entire room, move all of my stuff, and get it checked out before Wednesday UGHK. It really sucks. But anyway, so pumped we're going to the Orange Bowl. Too bad me and a bunch of my friends got shafted with getting tickets so now we're probably going to buy the 200 dollar ones, if we still even want to go. I love football-ok, I'm watching the Giants game bye.
