This Sucks
Yea so as we all know, this is hte last week of classes. But for me this is a great and horrible thign at the same time. I love that school is almost over but on the other hand, there is way too much work due this week for every class, and finals are coming up which I'm going to bomb no doubt. Oh yea and my final schedule sucks, Tuesday(10:10am), Wednesday (8am), and Friday (10:10am). Ya I am definately not a morning person and this schedule completely favors mornings. So that sucks too. But I believe this is my last blog so peace out.
Proposal for Final Project
Claim: When the option arises for a loved one to decide to let a person “live” under the power of machines, or in a comatose state, or die the right choice is to let that loved one go. Euthanasia should be legal and considered a just moral decision.
Reason: When one is functioning only due to machinery, that person truly is not “living” Also, when in a comatose state, the person is not able to do anything. They are just in a deep, unbreakable sleep. While in this “sleep”, one can only recover by a miracle, and I mean a miracle.
Warrant: Living and alive are synonyms. Alive can be defined as having life. The definition of life, from dictionary.com, is:
The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism.
With this definition of life I am going to focus on the differentiation between living organisms and inanimate matter and dead organisms since a human can simply be categorized as an organism. If there is no “life” present, the person should be let go.
Euthanasia is “painless killing to relieve suffering”; “the act or practice of killing somebody who has an incurable illness or injury, or allowing or assisting that person to die.” This definition is straight from the Encarta Dictionary. Euthanasia is a commonly argued topic and is currently viewed by many as a negative unethical killing. I will touch down on many situations to describe the pros/cons of each scenario. Many who are close to the person who is ill/injured find it impossible to allow that loved one to die if they can “live” by machine. Due to this fact, a definitional argument will also come into play here with the term alive or living. This is an important issue due to the fact that this is a huge decision making process which arises very frequently to all different types of families. This drastic situation, in where the closest relative to the injured has to make the decision whether to allow their loved one to “live” but not by their own power, can devastate many. It needs to be talked about. I hope to reach the broad audience of all people due to the fact that this decision can affect anyone at any given time. Some difficulties I plan on encountering are establishing a solid and trustworthy definition of “life” and to truly show all that euthanasia is not wrong and is a moral decision that should be viewed as a positive resolution. I will conduct a good amount of research from the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. I will also search through many different sources that provide pertinent statistics and to find testimonials about people who went through this decision making process. I will write this argument as a formal report including images of different things to help my points become established.

Response to A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift
I found A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift to be quite humorous. It proposes many absurd ideas. Some might find this to be funny, and other can very easily be offended by it. The idea that eating very young children would help the population and starvation problems of his time is absolutely hilarious. HAHA. Great idea man. But, on the whole I feel Swift is trying to get across the idea that the upperclass English is insensitive to the situation in Ireland.
Stigmergy
Stigmergy is the communication between social insect societies without communicating (ie nest structure).
Proposal for Proposal Paper
Claim: The legal national alcohol drinking age should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen.
Reason: Most citizens of the United States consume alcohol before the age of 21 anyway.
Warrant: Many countries worldwide lowered their legal drinking ages. Cops spend too much time and money trying to bust underage drinking, which affects nearly nothing, while much more major criminal activity is taking place.
Through this proposal, I hope to reach all Americans and specifically officials which actually can make a change with this issue. I hope to reach these officials because I truly feel this is law that should and needs to be changed soon. I plan on running into difficulties finding actual sources that support this notion but I think it is a common issue brought up by all teens (age 18-20) and even among many adults. This action needs to take place because for many reasons such as the fact that getting an underage drinking fine or violation on one’s permanent record can harm them greatly in their futures. Another reason why this needs to be set into motion is the simple fact that almost everyone 18 or older drinks, especially those that are in college. I will need to find statistics about this alcohol consumption among 18-20. I intend on this proposal being a letter to a national politician.
The main task will be to establish a need, which is actually pretty difficult. In the first place, it's probably not so effective to say that a law should be changed because people currently break it, especially since in this case the law is clearly intended to curb (or stop!) the action. Second, if you want to use the examples of other countries, you'll need to do some work to establish that their laws are relevant. To do that, you'll have to think about the assumptions underlying the US position and, for example, the Netherlands. When you do that, I think you'll discover that the two countries have a quite different ideas about alcohol generally. And those differences are probably deeply rooted in the culture of each society. Finally, when thinking about this, you'll want to look at the debate that culminated in requiring the drinking age to be raised to 21 in 1984. TheKemBlog
Response to Communist Manifesto
This, obviously, is a document written that supports the communist government and its ideals one hundred percent. It was written by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, the Communist Manifesto supports the communist government to the fullest extent. Also, the Communist Manifesto also promotes the commuinst government while demoting every other possible form of government in every available way. I dislike all communist governments and all past communist governments. I feel they did no good for anyone. Also, I strongly dislike any ideas even remotely related to communism.

Proposal for Causal Argument
For my first casual argument, I intend on discussing our world’s population growth. If population growth continues at its’ current rate, it will lead to the demise of our world in an economical, geographical, and environmental fashion. Population growth deserves great attention due to its high rate and the negative effects that will come forth if this issue goes unfixed. It is important that my readers consider the following: that we, as a world in the year 2006, are using our natural resources at a tempo that is not sustainable and with the population growing with such rapidity, free land space will be hard to come by. Everyone in the world should be concerned with this topic due to the fact that it will affect us all in one form or another someday. The affects from this might not be felt in the next couple years, or even in your lifespan but, someone in your family will be directly affected by this sometime soon. Many people feel that the population will hit a certain level and eventually start to level off and decrease over time. I will also discuss the differences in the growth rate in different countries and regions throughout the world. In order to research this argument, I will mainly use the internet to search and discover information. I will consult many sources such as the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, and many statistics that show the growth of our world. I will also use statistics of land usage and natural, irreplaceable resource use to help show what this growth is bringing towards us. I will format this argument as a letter in Popular Science magazine.
Question: Is the rate of population growth uniform across the globe?

Ok, so I probably am caught up to the blog situation after my recent outburst of blogs, but I still find myself blogging. I guess I gotta check how many of these blogs I have done, and how many I should have done to this date. Well anyway, last night I did not sleep, and here it is 3:32AM and the only sleep I've gotten was an hour and a half nap from about 8:30 to 10 tonight. To be honest, I'm not that tired right now, and with the work I have due this week, I can't seem to find the time to sleep tonight either. I'm completely bogged down with work, and my pace is slower than ever. I am procrastinating worse than I ever have and at the worst possible time. I think the anticipation of Spring Break and its nearness has caused this. God I can't wait for this week of hell to be over and the partying to begin. Well, this blog was actually a form of a break in my work tonight, so I'm off to work some more (including blogging on some stupid politcal article for class in about 10 hrs).
Response to Political Learnings in Politics
Where do you fit on the political spectrum?
Honestly, I hate politics. I think they are boring and they do not affect me. I still believe this, eventhough I know they affect me greatly. Politics are a very important part of our democratic society. My family is democratic, so I will follow suit in that sense. I do not plan on ever becoming more involved than casting my vote in the local, state, and federal elections.
Read the editorials and letters from the Daily Collegian. Can you determine the political leanings of each?
Well, the Collegian letters and editorials do have political leanings, I'm sure, but they are not as apparent as I had hoped they would be.
Watch an hour of evening news (any station). What political leanings are apparent?
Well I hope Sportscenter counts as an hour of news, since you said any station. It does give news, but only about sports and since I do not follow the news at all I hope this works. Even here, on a sports news show, there are political leanings. The apparent leanings are:

Yea so I randomly decided to pull an all nighter tonight. It's 5:15AM and I'm listening to music and playing poker on the internet and I'm still wide awake. My sleeping habits have been bad for the past 2 weeks or so..staying up til 4 sleeping til 1 or 2 when possible. I've slept through too many classes for no apparent reason. This all-nighter hopefully will make me go to sleep early tomorrow (actually today) and get me back to a normal person rather than somewhat of a nocturnal one, as my roomate calls me, a nocturnal person. Well I'm outta here...poker is getting quite intense.
Ooops
Forgot to copy and paste these responses to the wiki. I typed them up in word and forgot about them...here they are:
Response to Rwanda: How the genocide happened
"Between April and June 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the space of 100 days." WOW. I found this astounding. I never had any idea of this event ever occuring, and I questioned my roommate, and a couple of other friends and none have ever even heard of this. I find it amazing how so much violence and controversy takes places in other countries and the majority of our society is completely oblivious to them. This picture clearly depicts the tragedy that took place:
It truly is crazy what goes on in out world and how, for the most part, oblivious we (as Americans) are. Yea so that sentence sucked but I had to set limitions on that statement, and that was the only way I could think to do it.
Response to Q&A: Sudan's Darfur Conflict
From this article, and the last article pertaining to Rwanda, truly are depicted the horrid conditions and situations going on in Africa and that have taken place in the past. Unlike the last article, I have heard of Sudan before, and only due to the violence that takes place there. Such "ethnic cleansing" which is talked about is absolutely atrocious. Just the thought of ethnic cleansing, brings the memories of the history lessons about Nazism and The Holocaust, another terrible occurrence. Of course the situation in Sudan is not at the scale, or national recognition of that of The Holocaust, but I feel is no way less important. Something needs to be done in both of these situations to try to stop all of this unnecessary violence.

Yea so I've had a headache for the past two straight days. Feeling pretty shitty, I still have to ramble on in this wiki for no apparent reason except to fulfill my requirement for this putrid course. I hate writing with a passion. But, my science courses suck too. What in the hell does zero times infinity have to dow ith engineering, and an electric dipole also has zilch to do with engireering, unless if you're into electrical engineering, and thats not me, so what do I care about dipoles. It's 2AM and I'm still wide awake. I gotta hit the sack.
Response to My America
Andrew Sullivan's My America begins by speaking of America and how its people differ from those from Europe. He talks of our politeness, and equality among our nation. In our nation, as he states, we focus solely on the future and present, not the past. We focus on where we are going rather than where we have been. Sullivan feels our country is a self contradiction; everything that happens contradicts one thing or another. First off, I don't think a little kid on a bike can really inpact someone that greatly jus tby saying "Hi." I find that funny that he tries to say it affects him greatly. But I do agree that Thanksgiving is a very meaningful and important holiday. We have so much to celebrate for in our nation and this is a day simply for that.

Last week I had some tests, a math 141 and a physics 212. One went well and the other I was completely confident with until I saw my grade. A on one, F on the other. Go figure. I should be sleeping now considering I only got like 5 hrs combined in the past 2 nights. Oh and I still have to read for english and the write another blog on what I read, yes. Well I'm off to play poker and read.

Yea so there is this class that I hate, ED&D 100. It is absolutely pointless, and the damn drawings we do are rediculous. Oh yeah, and we have a group presentation in that class this week, on Friday. My group has exactly nothing done so far so that should be fun this week. For this dumb class, we need to dress 'formally' for this presentation. Of course, I don't have any dress clothes here, so I gotta get on a bus tomorrow after my classes and go to the damn mall and spend more money than necessay like usual. I gotta pick up khakis, a shirt, and a tie. Fun times.

So here I am, blogging at 1 am on a Wednesday morning about absolutely nothing. This week and last week have blown for me, the workload increased tremendously. ED&G drawings sucks, writing arguments sucks, I missed a week straight of my math class so I'm tryin to teach myself some calc, and physics is just a complete joke. Constantly tired, I still gotta keep on truckin. haha..

Alright, I just remembered that I am completely behind in these damn blogs. I don't know how many I need to make up but I'm sure there are a bunch considering we are supposed to do 4 a week and I;ve only been doin 3. So I am gunna grind out some blogs here while I play an internet poker tournament at 1am.

Proposal for Evaluation Argument
Claim: Abortion is a positive process for women today and our society.
Reason(s): I will judge this claim up against many criteria. To judge the effects on women, a woman’s overall health before/after an abortion and woman’s health before and after an unwanted birth shall be used. Our society receives positive influence by abortions due the fact that having abortions increases the overall child/human health rate, decreases child fatalities, and increases children’s overall health. (Umm, you mean increases the healthiness of those children born...)
Warrant(s): It is a woman’s choice when it comes down to abortions. If abortions were banned or claimed to be illegal, that would violate a woman’s freedoms. Accidental impregnation occurs when a couple, or even just two people taking part in intercourse, take every possible precaution to prevent pregnancy, but it still somehow happens.
Notice that the warrants don't quite match up with your reasons. That is, the reasons are all centered on physical health, but the warrants listed have more to do with a political right. TheKemBlog
Have you ever thought of the numerous young children that die daily due to abuse or lack of attention? This could be the result of an unwanted birth. You might be wondering, who would not want to birth the developing fetus inside you? Think of the amount of rapes that occur and the possibility of “accidents.” (How many are those exactly?) In this paper, I am going to show the pros/cons of abortion and even the neutral state of this issue. There have been many debates and disputes over the whole process of abortion for a long time now, going back to Roe v Wade. (Before Roe v Wade, actually) There are two clear cut sides to this argument: pro-life and pro-choice. From this, it will be clear that the pros easily outweigh the cons of abortion. I hope to reach a broad audience of all women that are capable of being impregnated since abortion, in fact, truly affects them the most. I will show the audience my side of this controversial issue and from evidence they will see pro-choice is the way to go. I will research through many online resources, mainly the OVRC, or Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. I plan on writing my project as a column in a popular, highly read, woman’s magazine so it will be extremely available to be read by all women and the general public.
So, your claim basically is that abortion should remain legal. That's an evaluative claim since to be illegal is a sign of disapproval. Fine. But do you mean to defend every type of abortion? Is the principal criteria going to be the health of the mother?
You'll also need to give attention to the other side. Why do they disagree? Probably because they're using different criteria for evaluation. Would you be willing to dismiss those? Probably not. But it seems that you would need to argue that the one's you're using are more important for the current debate. TheKemBlog

Olympics
American athletes are thought to be superior to intenational athletes, well for the most part of course. Going into this years winter olympics, there were five "top" American athletes, none of which has proved anything thus far. This just goes to prove that American athletes are not superior.
Response to the Declaration of Independence
Man do I hate reading all of these old historical documents. The language they are written in makes them so much harder to follow and fully grasp. The Declaration of Independece, however, is a very powerful historical document. It is basically just the people that finally settled in our country, away from Britain, telling Britain that they are no longer a part of their nation.

Proposal Comments
I commented on HappyBunnyBlog.
Comments on you Proposal:
Your argument is a good one, and you have a lot of good points. Some counter-arguments can be that adoption is always a possibility if the mother does not want to keep the child. The fetus may not be yet capable of living outside the uterus, but the process of reproduction has begun and a human being is forming. Our bodies were made in order to be able to reproduce offspring, and interrupting this process can be said to be interfering with our nature.
Proposal for Definition Paper
Claim: “Abortion” is not murder.
Reason(s): “Abortion” should be defined as a woman’s choice to expunge an embryo or fetus from her body before it is viable.
Warrant(s): A “fetus” is relying solely on its mother for all of its needs. It cannot make any conscience responses to its surroundings. A fetus also requires, until fully grown and developed, the protection of the womb. While a fetus may by animate and growing, it is not yet in existence as a human being. “Viable” in this sense is defined as capable of living outside the uterus. “Murder” is defined as the unlawful killing of another human by a human. In order to kill something, it must be alive prior, and a fetus is not.
Have you ever thought of the numerous young children that die daily due to abuse or lack of attention? This could be the result of an unwanted birth. From this paper, I am going to clearly define the term “abortion.” I hope to reach a broad audience of all women that are capable of being impregnated since abortion, in fact, truly affects them the most. Dictionary.com, from The American Heritage® Stedman's Medical Dictionary, defines abortion to be “The expulsion of an embryo or fetus before it is viable.” This definition is one of the best definitions of this term I have come across thus far. The use of the phrase “before it is viable” is essential in showing that abortion, in fact, is not murder. Many definitions, such as the Oxford English Dictionary’s: “The act of giving untimely birth to offspring, premature delivery, miscarriage; the procuring of premature delivery so as to destroy offspring,” give a broad and less concise depiction of what abortion truly is. I will show my audience my side of this controversial issue and convince them pro-choice is the way to go. There have been many debates and disputes over the thought of “is abortion murder.” There are two clear cut sides to this argument: pro-life and pro-choice. I intend on showing my audience the pros and cons of each side. After considering both sides, and even the neutral state, my audience will see that pro-choice is the best option.

Superbowl
Goddamnit!! The Steelers had to go and win the Superbowl. Til next February, I will hear all my annoying friends that are Steelers fans bragging about their team. "Who won the Superbowl?" "I'm pretty sure the Steelers did." Those are just to slight examples of some of the smart ass remarks I will be having to put up with for the next 365(+-) days. I definately think the Steelers did not deserve to win this game. The Seahawks outplayed them for the majority of the game. Pittsburgh caught a couple too many breaks in the officiating I think though. I am a big fan of 'the bus' however. I am glad he got to finish his excellent, hall-of-fame calibur career in his hometown and end it with a victory in Superbowl XL.
Response to the State of the Union Address
Man, I really don’t like G.W.Bush. In George W. Bush’s State of The Union Address last night, the primary issue discussed was the war on terrorism. As expected, he wants the Patriot Act back. This act is considered controversial by many but I feel it only helps our country and our authorities control devastating crimes. The main use of this Patriot Act is to find all terrorists and listen in on their plans to attack our homeland. He also spoke of economic issues. He is all about a Social Security plan being brought into action. George W. also wants to make his tax cuts permanent. I still don’t like him and I still believe he is a moron.
Response to "Defining Terrorism"
I wondered prior to reading this what the point in arguing of a stupid definition was or how in any way it was important. Thanks to this, I now see the importance of the definition terrorism. I feel a great definition of this tem is used by Walter Laqueur: “Terrorism constitutes the illegitimate use of force to achieve a political objective when innocent people are targeted.” Innocent people being targeted I feel is the main and most necessary criterion to qualify an act as terrorist. This is only one definition however and many may disagree with my opinion on this one. This is a great example of why people argue over a definition.
Response to George W. Bush's Address to Congress
For the first time so far, I was somewhat interested in the assigned reading and response. George W. Bush's address to congress was given right after the terrorist attacks on our nation after September 11th. Usually, most people criticize and make fun of Bush’s speeches, but I feel this is one of his best speeches. At this time period, all Americans were searching for an answer to this situation and for once, Bush provided us with a sufficient one: retaliation, and not a simple one like in the past. He also wants to keep our nation acting on our morals and values and not on racial profiles or religions. He attacks Osama Bin Ladin and Al Qaeda, and says the way to settle the score out is to rid our world of these terrorist organizations.
Response to "Universal Declaration of Human Rights"
The "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" is a list of rules and moral expectations that the countries in the United Nations should follow. I think it is a continuation of the Declaration if Independence. In my first years in high school, I believe 9th grade, I was showed this document in my civics class but didn’t really think too much about it. But now that I actually have read it, I agree with most of these rules and policies within this document. However, a good portion of the rules are not followed today at all times. For example, it says something along the lines of that everyone is entitled to all the rules in the document regardless of religion, sex, and race and so on. I believe that many people are treated differently still to this day due to religion, race, and sex. And now, another aspect that people are discriminated against is sexual orientation but at the time this was written this was not a problem. On the overall, however, I think the rules and policies are followed on a daily basis.
Response to FDR's Four Freedoms
I found FDR's Four Freedoms speech extremely moving and motivational. He spoke with such importance and placed such a high level of need from the American people. In a sense, it was like in this speech, he was demanding every single American person to cooperate and assist the defense of our nation and our nation's beliefs. He wants all citizens or believers in our policies to stand up and oppose the aggressors and the dictorship countries. It appeared that he was trying to get another point across that any who would not comply (assist in defense) should be publicly embarrassed. FDR conveyed a sense of fear among the American public. This fear also assisted his point that all should take action for this movement. I know for a fact, that if I lived during these times I would have been motivated and driven to help our country from this speech and I hopefully believe it had the same effect on the elders in my family.

Response to a Narrative
The blog that I am going to respond to is the PickYourPoison blog. I liked his format and feel it will be easy to change it to my own description from his.
Yo! What's goin' on? My name is Eli, and my hometown is Larksville, PA. It is your average boring, small town in PA but I like it. I am a freshman at Penn State majoring in engineering. I attended a high school in Plymouth, PA called Wyoming Valley West Senior High School. I had a great experience at this public highschool. I am into many different things such as: sports, music, movies, chillin' with friends, partying, and any- and everything that keeps me occupied and away from the thought of school. I am a very laid back guy and try not to worry about most things. I am also a big procrastinator. Well thats me....Later!
Response to "Letter from Birmingham Jail" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
The following is my response to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter From Birmingham Jail. This letter is extremely moving. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., regardless of the situation, remains calm, peaceful and collected. Many things stick out in this letter such as the points he tries to get across. One point I found extremely compelling is when he touched upon the fact that a white person will never know the true trials and tribulations of a black person because they can't experience things through the black person's standpoint. He also said that nobody knew about what was going on behind the scenes: the beatings by the police, and verbal abuse. Due to the fact that he was such a powerful and inspiring man, through peace and not violence, not honoring him, by way of a national holiday, would be a sham. From this letter, I now truly feel that Dr. King deserves a national holiday.
Personal Narrative
Hey, what's up? My name is Eli Garney and I am a freshman here majoring in engineering. I live in Pollock Halls specifically 501 Shunk Hall. I am having a blast out here even though the schoolwork is a drag. I graduated from a public high school in a small town called Larksville. It's your average town: never anything going on. I love sports even though I don't participate in any now. My favorite sports teams are: NFL, San Francisco 49ers, NBA, Miami Heat ( Shaquille O'Neal is my favorite athlete so this changes when he gets traded), MLB, yes the greatest baseball team of all time, The New York Yankees! I listen to rap music, but can tolerate all except for country. I am also into the poker scene. I play online constantly and that takes away from the time I should be putting into school but I get by. I always procrastinate and wait til the last minute if not second to get things done. Well I guess that gives you a broad idea of who I am so I'm outta here. Peace.
