English15FinalPaper

I grew up on a farm in Damascus Maryland. You would think I'm a hick because I grew up in the middle of nowhere but I went to school in D.C. which I feel normals me out, if that makes sense. I’ve played the drums since middle school and currently am in a jam band called 8th street. I also played lax all through high school. This class should be interesting because I can’t even remember the last time I’ve written a paper.

The tone of Martin Luther King's letter to the Birmingham Jail was the most impressive literary element involved in the work. It is a peaceful, sincere, and inspiring. The flow and rhythm of his language adds to the over all calm and tranquil tone. Martin Luther King talks about peace and equality with a moral authority. He gives specific facts and reasons why the United States should change the way they look at racial justice. King's appeal to the human emotions through tone makes this letter an influential one.

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall" can be classified as a rational appeal. One is using common sense, not a cold hard fact. "Drunk drivers are involved in more than 50 percent of traffic deaths." This statement could be taken as fact but there is a lack of supporting evidence. The statement about the DNA testing of the skin suggests the defendant being responsible is fairly clear cut. The speaker makes a claim and does give supporting evidence. "Polls suggest that a large majority of Americans favor a constitutional amendment to flag burning." Polls cannot be taken as a fact but they do give a good prediction. When "a psychologist testified that teenage violence could not be blamed on computer games" the psychologist was using logic and reasoning to come up with this but it is not necessarily taking as fact. The statement: "Honey attracts more flies than vinegar" appeals to one's common sense or intuition suggesting a factual statement.

"The Four Freedoms" speech by FDR is an example of arguments based on character. When composing an argument, one must be able to convey honesty and athority based on their own character. This is known as "ethos." Honesty and athority is something that every president is thought to have and FDR was especially known for it.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a sophisticated and specific list of moral and ethical principals for all humanity to abide by. The General Assembly of the United Nations had a goal to ensure dignity among many of the nations is the world. It is an unfortunate reality that Nations will always continue to go against these explicit laws that were well thought out. When a nation is threatened, it is fair to say more times then not, they will not hesitate breaking rules if it helps there own situation.

Terrorism can come in many different shapes or figures. In most cases, terrorism has a strong link with violence. There are also many different reasons for terrorism. Political extremists frequently are the one’s who are doing the terrorizing. When terrorism happens, a large population could be in danger. It’s most basically unjust warfare. Terrorism also seems to be ever present. It has always manifested in different scenarios throughout the history of human kind. Because it is usually religiously or politically linked, many people are involved. It becomes most dangerous when there is a large group of extremists. Terrorists often target a group of people simply because of their contradicting beliefs.

The last time I’ve written a paper seems like a decade ago. In actually, senior year was really only eight months ago. Oddly enough, at the same time, it seems like 12th grade was only yesterday. Who fast does time really go?

Time is concrete. It obviously stays the same and it’s measurable. I’ve slowly been realizing the pace of people’s life is always changing speed, not time. Usually one never really knows how fast time is going until it’s over and passed him by. For the first time in my life, however, I feel its going too fast. SLOW DOWN.

What is knowledge and how can it be defined? There is not one definition of knowledge, in fact there are many elements of knowledge that must be defined separately. Knowledge can come from one’s emotion or intuition or “common sense.” Humans are the only creatures on earth who are able to think intuitively. All other animals only have instincts. Humans also gain knowledge through reason. Reason comes from logic, rational, analytic thoughts, and judgments. We also learn through the act of doing things; or experience.

I’ve been starting to realize that my family is the most valuable thing in my life. I have also realized I don’t spend enough time with my family. When I’m home, I feel like I prioritize my friends over my family. My friends are plenty important, but I realize that friends can come and they can go. The people in my family are the only ones who will stay with me through thick and thin. No matter what I do to mess up, my family will be there to love me unconditionally. I should do more to be for them as they are for me.

The Declaration of Independence is the first and quite possibly the most important written document in the history of the United States. It was obviously the document that told the English that the American colonies were no longer going to be a part of Brittan. The most interesting aspect of the document is the reasons that United States gives for leaving. They reasons are mainly because “unalienable” human rights, and freedom from over powering governments. I feel that yes the first Americans did want human rights, but it wasn’t the main reason for secession. The main reason was to avoid paying taxes and dues to the British, but it seemed to work out anyway for the colonists in the long run.

There really is an art in rhetoric. Rhetoric is comprised of several key elements: ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is an “appeal based on the character of the speaker. An ethos-driven document relies on the reputation of the author.” Logos is an “appeal based on logic or reason. Documents distributed by companies or corporations are logos-driven. Scholarly documents are also often logos-driven.” Lastly pathos is “an appeal based on emotion. Advertisements tend to be pathos-driven.”

The five fold way of rhetoric is simply a plan that someone may follow to have appealing and effective rhetoric. There must be an agent or action in every sentence, which is the use of active and passive voices. There must be and information flow, which is the act of including new and old information in each sentence. There must be a consistent thesis throughout the work. At the same time, the thesis must flow and develop as well as mention counter arguments. The last but not least component to the five fold way of rhetoric is grammatical and spelling. The work must be revised carefully by an editor.

Between April and June 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the space of 100 days. The big question is how did this happen. Personally, I believe that there is no reason this should have happened. It surprises me that no country or organization has intelligence systems that would be able to make others aware of the killings. I feel that if certain nations such as the United States would have known about this, they would have been able to intervene and save a significant amount of lives. This is a very unfortunate situation that could happen again. I feel that the United Nations should be able to set up intelligence that would let them know if there unjust violence so mass murder of innocent people may be prevented.

Areas in Africa such as Sudan have been plagued with violence and terrorism. It is especially unfortunate because there are many innocent citizens who are negatively affected by the conflicts. At least 180,000 have lost their lives and even more have had to leave there homes because of intense aggression and bloodshed in their hometowns. Literally millions have had to leave there destroyed villages and have to now struggle to find water and other things that are vital for survival. Women have been held as sex slaves for weeks as the turmoil continues. The United Nations have done little to intervene and the problems continue to infect the country.

Biases in rhetoric are something that all writers should pay close attention to. “What is the author's vantage point, in terms of social class, wealth, occupation, ethnic group, political ideology, educational level, age, gender, etc.?” There are many things that can affect the reader’s trust in the writer. As a reader, he/she wonders if the writer has anything to gain from persuading a certain point or is he/she simply making a personal testimony to prove a point independent of his financial or political endeavors. The reader must also take into consideration how liberal or conservative the writer may be. The reader than compares this judgment to their own political standing.

I feel I am a conservative and thus I am a part of the “right wing” group. Right wing is a “broad term that refers to a diversity of parties and political viewpoints. The term includes libertarians (who are nearest to the center of the political spectrum) and--moving progressively further from the center--conservatives, ultra-conservatives, plutocrats, and fascists.” I am probably this way because this is how my dad it. Generally, I support business, management, unregulated enterprise. I feel competition is more effective then cooperation because competition will cause everyone to strive for greatness, instead of depending on someone else to do it for them. Nationalism is important for the United States because we are the world power and others will try to hurt us simply because of that reason. I also feel we must have a strong military in order to preserve our many freedoms.

Communism is a quite interesting form of government. It could definitely be the most debatable one in the history of man. People have loved, hated, feared, and even died because of it. A major cause of the Vietnam War was the fear of the spread of communism. Two popular names that are associated with communism are Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. Karl Marx was a popular philosopher, economist, journalist, and revolutionary. He claimed to create a society that was both scientific and revolutionary. Lenin formed Leninism which he said to be an adaptation of Marxism.
