Western New York to Central Pennsylvania

My name is Kevin Wigton and I am currently enrolled as an engineering student here at Penn State. I am the youngest of two children and the second to attend a large university. I grew up in a medium sized town whose total population hovers around one third of the student population at University Park. In the past week I’ve found myself continuously explaining to people that I’m not from New York City, or anywhere close to it. The city I am from is about thirty minutes east of Buffalo.

During high school I was involved in academic groups, sports teams, and a number of other things that one doesn’t list off knowing that a professor will be reading this narrative. This past school year I was president of my class, captain of the hockey team, and co-captain of the baseball team. I feel that this is where I am going to experience the difference between high school and college. I am used to having everyone know who I am and what I am like. It has been entertaining and refreshing to meet new people and make new friends everyday since I arrived here.

Growing up in a small city I found myself going to school, playing sports, and hanging out with the same group of people for the past 6 years. When it came time to look at colleges I knew that I didn’t want to continue into my thirteenth year of high school, like so many graduates of Batavia High. I wanted to move on to something bigger and different for a change. There were only three schools that I applied to last fall. One of these schools was the University of Buffalo. However, it lacked a certain appeal when I found out that one quarter of my graduating class was going to be there. It was then that I decided to go to school out of state. My only dilemma was between Pitt and Penn State. Finally I decided that Penn State would be the best fit and I have been very pleased with my decision.
