For my final project I would like to discuss the issues of legalizing marijuana for recreational use in today’s society. I plan to argue that the war on drugs should not include marijuana because the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. Also, I plan on using the alcohol versus marijuana debate extensively in my paper. This is a serious, pressing issue in today’s society, and I believe that almost everyone in America should be concerned. The disadvantages of alcohol use are far greater than those of marijuana in my opinion; the fact that people are allowed to get drunk and belligerent—while others serve time in jail for smoking a joint and not bothering anyone-is completely absurd in my opinion. A large amount of money is spent every year on putting people in jail because they deal drugs. Not to say that these are all good people (many of them are not), but people are put in jail that do not pose a threat to society. The money wasted on these hopeless endeavors of a marijuana free society could be turned into a huge profit by legalizing and taxing marijuana. There are also many uses of hemp plants, which are banned at the moment along with marijuana, that are being wasted every day. The issue of marijuana legalization is particularly important to present users of marijuana, people who would love to try marijuana but refrain because it is illegal, people who have a strong negative view towards marijuana use, and people who would like to learn more about marijuana in general. Although extremely slow, the worldwide trend seems to be towards marijuana legalization. Recently in Denver, Colorado the public voted, by a close margin, that possession of small amounts of marijuana should be legal. This should perk the entire nations ears, and signal that marijuana may be more understood than before, and it’s illegality should be reconsidered.

I really respect your opinion about this topic, but I don't think it would be good. Marijuana has a lot of side effects, just as alcohol can damage your liver, and cigarrets can damage your lungs, but they are legal. But if our society has easy access to this things (alcohol and cigarrets) that are putting them in danger, why should we give them another reason to get sick by using marijuana. Maybe it can help with other deases, or if it legalized it would help our economy, but I don't think this reasons are stronger than the health of the society. Here is a reaserch done by The National Institute of Drug Abuse that talks more about the side effects of marijuana. Althought, I do not agree, I really think that these paper will be very interesting. I'm looking foward to read it. CoRy

I think that you have chosen a great topic. You will have much to write about, and there are many counter-arguments to your topic. I agree with Cory when he says marijuana has side effects. Just because alcohol is legal it does not mean that marijuana should be. Alcohol abuse can lead to death, damage to the liver, and years of overcoming the problem of alcoholism. We should not have the easy access to another drug that is harmful to the body by legalizing marijuana. In addition, I believe if marijuana was legalized it would lead to the possibility of legalization of other drugs. Arguments would continue to if marijuana were legalized why can't some other drug also be. Otherwise, I believe that you will have no problem writing this paper. There are many arguments to support this issue, and many counter-arguments. CodyBlog
