The great Penn State past time: drinking. Almost all Penn State students drink if it is legal for them to do it or not. It has been a national understanding the level of alcoholic consumption and parties by Penn State students. However, the outcome of people drinking is not new to anyone. There is a battle about the effects of drinking and if certain ages are mentally and physically able to handle the responsibilities. Everyone has there opinions; adults over the age of 30, generally feel that the current “you must be 21” laws are important and must stay for the safety of the younger people and those around them at the time of consumption. Adults from the ages of 21 – 30 for the most part, from what I have gathered, feel that the law should stand because it existed when they were younger even though a lot have no problem getting alcohol for those under 21. Then there is the category of adults from the age of 18-20 that I fall into (however the views of this group are also shared with many people younger then 18 years.) Their general consensus is that they should have the right to buy alcohol and they have many great points to back it up. I agree with many of these points in that it is unfair to call us adults, give us certain rights, such as dying to defend our country, but not letting us consume a beverage that we later will be allowed to do legally. It sickens me that our government has tried to take this away from us, BUT I completely agree! The drinking age should stay at 21. Not because those under that age are not mentally capable of handling it, but because of the positive differences that the age limit brings. I am a traitor to my people and to my own desire to be drunk every night. Although I agree some of the people younger then 21 are knowledgeable about drinking and its effects, most will forget this when they begin to actually consume alcohol. It takes practice to understand the full extent that certain types and amounts of alcohol have on one’s body. Lowering the age, if lowered to 18 like most wish, will cause the problem of high school students getting a hold of alcohol on a regular basis and this will trickle down to getting those under the age of 18 drinking. Sure it already happens but it can only get worse. This leads to the point that there is already a “problem” of underage drinking. Why is there a problem? Because alcohol is not that hard to obtain for those who are underage, so why is there complaining that you cannot get drunk? Sure you have to stay indoors or keep your cool outside but people of legal age have to generally keep the same rules; it is called drunk and disorderly or public intoxication. I like all of you want to be able to keep my fridge stocked with beer and my freezer with liquor but do you not do that anyway?

I have recently rediscovered a game that I had not played since high school. Fishy is one of the better flash games created. Why do you ask? Well it’s not because of high quality graphics or in depth game play, but rather its simple play and the messages it portrays. In this game you start out as a relatively small fish and when I say small I mean real small. It is only two dimensional; you can move up and down and left and right using the four directional keys on your keyboard. On the screen fish of different sizes and colors swim across at varying speeds. The plot of the game is to survive by eating only fish that are smaller then you and avoiding those that are bigger then you cause they will eat you. As you eat more fish you become larger and can therefore eat some of the fish you couldn’t before. This game has many important messages the most obvious would be that in nature it is eat or be eaten. Another lesson would be that you should never try and bite more then you can chew since in this case it will eat you instead. The game also teaches that sometimes you must decide whither it is worth it to take risks to eat fish that are smaller to you that are on the other side of a bigger fish and to never become over confident in your actions cause they might just come back to bite you. The most important part about this game is to get all your friends playing it because of the final lesson it teaches. I can not tell you the pure fun it was to sit in my friends room as people down the hall scream “Bull****! That fish was F***ing smaller then me!” They have learned an important lesson though. That what you expect is not always going to be the outcome, that life is not always fair and that sometimes you just got to sit back and laugh.

Responce to "A Modest Proposal"

Sometimes comedy is the best way to give light on a current issue that has been causing a "problem." Many comedians use their jokes to try and inform the audience on issues. Two well known comedians that are doing that now are Dave Chappelle and Carlos Mencia. Jonathan Swift’s proposal is one of the earliest pieces that used comedy to try informing the public of a growing problem. But he had a problem of his own; in 1729, there comedy may not have been as important as it is in modern society and many people took his proposal as being truly serious and were revolted to read such a thing. However, I enjoyed Swift’s proposal and feel that parents who cannot provide for children should not have many.

coal

My heart is like coal

Black and hard as rock

Yet with force can be destroyed

It sits heavy with the weight of those few it does care for

It can be ignited though not on its own

It takes a spark or fire of passion from love for or of another

But when it catches, it burns intensely and it rages with more feeling imagined

Then as coal does it gets used up quickly and the fire is gone

There is nothing left but black soot that can not be changed and needs to be cleaned

For my heart to return to its former state then takes time as that of coal

Every time it gets used up it takes longer to come back and less of it is found

But like coal it has one amazing trait

That there is something out there that can change it

Make it no longer that soft stone that is used and leaves filth on anything it touches

Instead turn it into a marvelous stone that can not be changed

A stone that inspires with its beauty and will last forever

But it will take work for it to become such

It will take pressure and heat

It will take patience and understanding

It will take someone important to make a black heart as mine to the diamond that I will want to give them.

3.20.06 : Responce to "The Communist Manifesto"

Marx and Engels’ certainly put a lot of thought into how the world works. I thought that the idea of a class struggle certainly has existed for a long while, starting with masters and slaves, down to the bourgeoisie and the working class of Marx’s time, to the lower-class and upper-class of today. The writers, however, thought that at some point the working class would eliminate all the remaining classes and there would no longer be a class struggle. The ideas within the Communist Manifesto have gathered thousands of believers over the 150 years since it has been written. One thing held Marx’s ideas of the future from coming true, he was under the impression that laborers must ultimately take over the means of production and eventually destroy the capitalist system. He did not understand a key event that came into play recently. Marx and Engels thought that their ideas would eventually be applied to the affairs of humanity. Workers, consequently, are able to become entrepreneurs in free and republican societies. Small businesses have also gained much power recently due to the advent of computers. The means of production are constantly becoming less and less expensive due to efficiencies in production.

3.1.06 : Responce to Political Learnings in Politics

Donald Lazere gives good advice in this piece. It is important to read or listen to a person’s views, political and social, to determine the credibility of their speech. What they saying can be true, but you must also determine if they are giving you all the information. The semantic patterns are a good set of questions to determine if the source or speaker seems bias. After finishing the article, I determined where I would be on the political spectrum by Lazere’s definitions. I would be considered a liberal and a socialist, even though I knew that already, but that has a lot to do with how I grew up just as Lazere stated earlier in his piece

I believe music is an important aspect of life. It is the original communication. Most people feel attracted to the music before the lyrics going back to the time before language. But besides that, lyrics are important to strike a chord with their intended audience, pun intended. I once mad a list of the top ten songs that strike a chord with me. I put great thought into it so of course I forgot. Here are some songs however that are high up there and you should check them out.

Green Day - Basket Case

Weezer - Buddy Holly

Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings

John Fogerty - Fortunate Son

Linkin Park - Place for My Head

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Bryan Adams - Summer of '69

Beatles - Hard Days Night

Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philidelphia

Lustra - Scotty Doesn't Know

Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me

Guns N' Roses - November Rain

Johnny Cash - (Ghost) Riders in the Sky

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Responce to Rwanda: How the Genocide Happened :and: Q&A: Sudan's Darfur Conflict

Using causal arguement to explain the worst, these articles explain how arguement can be used to instigate horrible crimes and in themselves argue why they happened. The article about the genocide that occured in Rwanda gives a detailed explanation of what was the causes of the previous actions that occured in the country prior to. Explaining the steps leading to the genocide of Tutsis with the facts and the reputation of BBC makes this causal arguement believable.

Well this is my blog and I can do what I want, haha. So, here are some songs for everyone to listen too. You may know the song when you listen to them but do not know them by their names so you should check them out! If you are a student at Penn State you can get these songs on napster and if not then I hope you can find some way to listen to them.

  1. The Shins - New Slang : This is that catchy song you may have heard in Garden State. I also feel that the entire soundtrack to that movie is good so you should check that out too. The movie is also good, yeah I know I am a guy and I like Garden State, you got a problem with that?
  2. Sister Hazel - Change Your Mind : You may know the band from the song All For You, but this one is the song that plays at the end of the movie Bedazzled. This movie was not that hot and the soundtrack is not so great either.
  3. Eels - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues : Sticking with the movie soundtracks, this one comes from the movie Road Trip. Another catchy song that makes me happier when I hear it.
  4. Gin Blossoms - Til I Here It From You : From the Empire Records soundtrack, another of my favorite movies and soundtracks, many people know of the Gin Blossoms but because this one was on a soundtrack most of you out there may not have heard of it.

2.22.06 : Responce to My America by Andrew Sullivan

Sullivan gives a good point in this piece. Thanksgiving is a time where America becomes selfless and they appreciate all that has been given to them. I can see where people all around seem a little happier, but that might just be the fact they know that thanksgiving dinner is not too far away. Likewise, during the 4th of July you can see American flags waving outside half the houses you see. Everyone seems to be more brash and are looking for a good time to celebrate our nation's birthday. Yet, I believe that this is not so much as an excessive celebration as it is a celebration for the freedom that our country men have fought for.

2.21.06 : Personal Blog

To go along with my last to personal blogs, here are two quotes that I really like. The first is one that I found in high school that I had to say for a recitation my senior year; the second is one I found last night that I put up as my away message and it is pretty awesome.

  1. Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results. -Anonymous
  2. I love life...Yeah, I'm sad, but at the same time, I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like...It makes me feel alive, you know. It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt something really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feeling is like a beautiful sadness. -Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park, Raisins, 2003

2.20.06 : Personal Blog

Well I am pretty much over the shit that happened Saturday thanks to a list of things. Sunday I watched the US soccer team beat Guatemala 4 – 0 and it was just a dominating game that was great to watch. Then I watched the Southern Superbowl, or for those who do not know it by that name it’s the Indianapolis 500 or as my friend Frank likes to call it, the roundie rounds. All the while I talked to friends who used my own advice that I generally give them back to me and it helped; a lot. I have always thought that to be happy you have to know what it is to be sad and that if you feel that things will never get better then they never will. My friends knew exactly what I needed to hear, that’s why they are my friends. So to them I say thank you, and to all of you ready I say follow this advice it can really change your outlook on life and can make life more enjoyable.

So remember that high school drama? This girl likes this guy but he likes her friend. Or there is the guy uses this girl just to get in her pants then dumps her two day later. Or my favorite, those girls who has a boyfriend who is a complete asshole and does every drug obtainable at your school but will not leave him because he "is so nice to me." Well when I got to college I thought that most of that would be over. Sure there are still some cases of it but they seem few and far between. Sure guys still use girls but it’s kind of expected and the things about one girl liking a guy that likes her friend still happen, but they generally are not in the high excess as in high school. Well Saturday high school caught up with me and showed me that college isn’t any different when it happens to you. Instead of explaining the story I will just say that nobody, that I told it to, expected it would ever happen, especially to me and thanks to her I am a little wiser.

2.17.06 : Proposal for Evaluation Paper

The typical guy movie consists of violence, comedy, honor, courage, and hundreds of one-liners. You could say there are thousands of movies that fall under these categories but to be a guy’s movie it has to make the girlfriend or wife want to leave the room. Of course that isn’t always the case because I know a lot of girls who love Scarface but it is considered to be one of the greatest guy movies of all time. To be one of the greatest of all times, the movie has to have all these qualities in great excess. “They're just two ordinary men who were put in an extraordinary situation and just so happened to come out on top.” The statement by Paul Smecker (William Defoe) in The Boondock Saints is the epitome of every guys dream. From Rudy and Rocky, to the Bond collection and Italian Job, every guy has wanted to do great things when little was expected. The Boondock Saints has all of the qualities of a great guy movie and could be one of the all time greatest.

It's not clear which movie you're evaluating. Be sure that you choose one. "Guy movie" is the genre, and its definition gives you the standards according to which the movie can be judged. So, you'll have to clearly say what a guy movie does and how the movie you choose fits or falls short of that. And, you'll want to give some attentiont to counter-arguments. TheKemBlog

Has anyone see the flash cartoon going around with the bunny? Its hilarious! Its got that 80's feel to it and the visual of the rabbits is moving. It gives a great arguement that sex is more important than death, also giving the example of a male orb weaver spider who dies during sex. The flash appeals to the emotions while the bunny sings his heart out and gives his soul to the viewer. Here is a site to view the amazing flash, but as a warning the song is on loop so it will continue to play even after it is over. http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/bunny.php

I never read the entire Declaration of Independence before. It is a well orchestrated document that steps through the process of evaluation. Finally it gives the proposed course of action to be taken by the 13 colonies.

2.13.06 : Definition Paper

ListenToMeWhineDefinition

Personal Blog

Well tonight I had my first mid-term exam in Math 141 and I entered with a firm understanding of the topics and a stood tall to face my opponent. The preparation was fierce consisting of four days of rigorous problem solving. I trained with the masters in the art of trig substitution at two study sessions. I battled multiple training partners and when I was done those four practice tests, I was ready. I entered the room sat down did the first problem without hesitation. I got through the test. When I got back here, in my room, I crawled into the fetal position on my bed and wanted to cry. I hope I got above a 70 on it.

2.8.06 : Peer Evaluation

I like the topic you chose to define. However, I am not sure how you are going to define perfection. As you stated in your proposal, every object is perfect for its purpose, and nothing more. So you would need to pick a specific object to define. Secondly, people might have objections to you defining perfect, because perfect is usually a statement of opinion. Again, I like your topic, and it can definitely be something interesting to define. Your proposal contains some very good ideas. I like the counter arguments you have mentioned, they went along with my line of thinking.

I evaluated TheMuchaBlog's proposal.

2.6.06 : Proposal of a Definition Paper

I was listening to music while trying to think about the right topic I was going to “define,” when the song “Reason” by Hoobastank came on my random playlist. I do not particularly like the song too much since it had been over played but some of the lines made me think. Quote: “I’m not a perfect person; there’s many things I wish I didn’t do; but I continue learning.” This made me realize a term that everyone seems to know the definition of is not what it is at all. Perfection, it is what some say means that there is no flaws; that what ever is being described could not be any better than it already is.

I do not believe this to be true. In fact, I feel that the definition is not perfect and that it itself is flawed. Has anyone ever seen perfection? The term is used loosely to complement those they wish to please. Saying that someone is perfect is just a matter of opinion or even more that you do not believe it to be true since you know what imperfections the person possess. Take for example, I have told my mother that the dinner she had just made was perfect, when I do not have any jurisdiction to say so since I do not how the dinner was originally supposed to taste like and one person’s view of perfection is not the same for others.

So what is perfection? It is the state that the object of such remark is not “perfect” but yet satisfactory for all who ask of it. A tablespoon is “perfect” for measuring a tablespoon but I would not use it to measure a teaspoon, even though I could, for its accuracy would be off. This is an important fact for those people who feel they need to be "perfect." I know that I have been asked to be perfect on many occasions and I took it hard when I did not live up to the request. Perfection, as it is generally defined, is something everyone strives for as they should but it must be realized that that type of perfection shall never be obtained. That definition is not the word means at all and it is causing too many people to suffer for they feel they are imperfect when they are the epitome of perfection in the true meaning of the word.

2.1.06 : Responce to "President can lay out Annual Course in Speech" from USA Today

Since I have class during the time of the State of the Union address I read the article "President can lay out Annual Course in Speech" printed in Tuesday, January 31, 2006 edition of the USA Today. I was interested to read that a State of the Union address is not required and that many presidents did not give the address in person. The article also save statistics of words given in President Bush's previous five State of the Union address. The most used word in his previous speeches was America, saying it over 117 times, and second most was Americans, saying it 112 times. Bush has also avoided the hot-button issues by not refeering to them in his speeches, such as the word abortion stating only once in his previous five addresses. This just shows that presidents are always looking for approval even though part of there job is to cover such issues.

1.30.06 : Responce to "Defining Terrorism"

Well even though a definition is the way a word is widely used among the majority of people, people aren’t always in agreement in the way words are used. Terrorism is a term that is widely used; a word that we hear constantly in our present day society. Well I have read a few definitions given by some of the more respected sources for definitions. Of them, in my opinion, the definition given by the United Nations is a more accurate and a narrowed perspective of the term. However you can never say that is how the term will be used meaning the same thing each time and that the opinion of the user is the only judge of how it’s being used. For instance look at this definition given by Oxford Concise Dictionary of Politics:

Term with no agreement amongst government or academic analysts, but almost invariably used in a pejorative sense,

most frequently to describe life-threatening actions perpetrated by politically motivated self-appointed sub-state

groups. But if such actions are carried out on behalf of a widely approved cause, say the Maquis seeking to

destabilize the Government of Vichy France then the term 'terrorism' is avoided and something more friendly is

substituted. In short, one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter.

1.27.06 : Responce to President Bush's Address to a Joint Session of Congress on Terrorist Attacks

Before I respond to President Bush's Address, I would like to say I am not a Bush supporter. However, I do believe he did an amazing job of keeping America together and of bringing us back after the attack on 9/11. Bush's address was a well written and well spoken. His address not only spoke to congress but also to the hearts of the American people. He spoke to many groups of not only Americans but to countries that we consider our allies. His address told people to stay together but to continue to do as we would. His appeal to the values of the American people kept the nation from falling into fear. To prove that we are not afraid and that our freedoms will never been infringed upon.

1.25.06 : Responce to Universal Declaration of Human Rights

I see that this document was written well and with much conviction for what is important for peace. I believe that such documents must exist to be used to make sure that the beliefs that they hold will be followed. I did notice two articles in this document that are supposedly followed by all countries in the United Nations and I feel that our nation isn’t.

First is in Article 16, which states that:

(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to

marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its

dissolution.

(2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.

(3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and

the State.

It does not say a man and a woman of full age; it says men and women with no regards to only opposite sex marriage. Also part 3 says that the family is entitled to protection by society and the State; meaning it’s our nation’s duty to allow them the same rights as that of others who wish to marry.

Second is in Article 30, maybe the most important article:

Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage

in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth

herein.

I feel this has not been the case in our non-logical attack on Iraq. Yes, Hussein is a man who should be tried for crimes against humanity, but the unjust invasion of a country that, so far, has little to do with what it was accused of, this cannot be tolerated. Yet, a nation that supposedly follows this document, seemed to have broken it.

1.23.06 : Responce to FDR's speech: The Four Freedoms

FDR uses values and past reasoning as a effect tool to support is arguement. He uses our past congress and presidents' decisions as a platform to convince the then present congress to support other countries in their war against Nazi Germany. Note: this speech was given prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor and he does not have the backing of the entire nation for his views. He is explains how their present national policy would not be enough to protect our nation. Roosevelt's use of the four lines of arguement to win over his position to congress. First appealing to the emotions by using the unjust action of the invasion of Norway and Belgium. Then using the values and character of being a congress man and how you must do what is right for our nation. He also used the examples of the past and he explains with reasoning to support the idea of supporting waring nations with supplies to preserve not only those nations freedoms but that of ours as well.

In this blog I will be responding to the HappyBunnyBlog.

Hey, everyone, my name is Thomas James Cosgrove. I was born in West Chester, Pa, which is where I have lived all my life. I am a freshman at PSU, and this is my second semester. I will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering, and eventually wish to have a sweet career in that field. I enjoy music, sports, and movies, and I play the drums, however I'm pretty much horrible. Although, when one plays the drums around a group of individuals who don't play the drums, they will think he/she is good anyway, and that is how I like it. I have quite the sense of humor. I say quite because of the range of humor I enjoy as long as it is in a situation that it applies; sarcastic, childish (and I mean Disney childish), perverted, and anything else that anyone else may find funny. Thats me in a nutshell. Help! I'm in a nutshell! I don't know how I got in this nutshell.

1.16.06 : Responce to "Letter from Birmingham Jail"

As a man who believes in the moral obligation of my fellow humans and myself, I found Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" to be a must read for any student. His compeling arguement made me question if I have been keeping with my desire to serve justice. I at first wondered why it should take so long to get a point across that in my opinion was resolved in the first twenty-or-so paragraphs. As I continued to read I saw that he was using this letter as a way to push for his belief in true justice towards someone who believed it too but at a different pace. While reading the letter, it across my mind that I wasn't sure if Martin was using his religion as examples because he was highly religious or that is something that a fellow clergyman would respond to greatest. King's letter is an amazing piece of arguement. His skills in the art of persuasion are undoubtly great. However to get a full understanding of the topic that is originally addressed, I feel a look at the original published statement and an look into the actions taken following this letter would be needed.

I guess I will explain my blog title. It is part of a lyric of my favorite song by my favorite band. You may have seen me wear the shirt, if you are in my class or know who I am but for those who don’t; my favorite band is Green Day. I heard of them from a friend when I was in first grade and they started me in my love of music. I consider Dookie to be the greatest album of my generation and my favorite song, of course, is on it. Basket Case ties in with every emotion one can have and it can speak to the heart of every person. The opening lyric “Do you have the time; to listen to me whine; about nothing and everything all at once?” It speaks to the volume of people who just want to be heard for what they have to say. The entire album is geared to the emotions that would typically be conduced with a teenager but those are feeling you feel throughout you life and that must not be overlooked. So that is what this blog is for, to me to express how I feel and for you to hopefully read it for what it is. It will often sound like whining but that is why it is here.

1.13.06 : Introduction Blog

In high school, I was a member of the football, wrestling, and track teams. I planned to follow football to Juniata or Leighigh for wrestling. However, I recieved a shoulder injury during my senior football season and played on it, which became so severe that surgery was required and sports were not in my future. In high school I was president of my school's DECA chapter but instead of following into business I went with my knowledge of the exact sciences. I chose Penn State to try and become a mechanical engineer. That is why I am here at Penn State. My name is Tom Cosgrove.
