Well I really have no idea what to write about, but I guess the first thing that comes to mind is my first week here at PSU. I am from Connecticut and all throughout my senior year I desperately wanted to attend PSU because it was far from home, had a great football team, was great for my major (business) and had a thriving student body. All of my friends from high school were going to the University of Connecticut and I wanted to be the independent one who followed my own path (apparently to Pennsylvania). I loved the feeling I got when people in my hometown would ask me where I was going to school, "So where are you headed off to next year?" I would respond with "Oh I'm going to Penn State." They would respond with "OH MY GOODNESS! PENN STATE...GOOD FOR YOU!" That typical, excited, response would make me overly excited. Now that I am here in Pennsylvania, I realize that I actually do miss Connecticut and wish I had given Uconn a chance. Penn State is a great school though, so I'm glad that I'm here.

The football game was awesome today! I had never seen so many people together before. It was overwhelming but at the same time a lot of fun. Penn State played an incredible game as well, beating Southern Florida by 10 points! My parents called me to ask me the result of the game and I was proud to tell them. I have to admit, althought I'm homesick, I do enjoy the football games here at Penn State. Uconn does not remotely have the school spirit that Penn State has.

It was nice having a long weekend. I basically just hung out, with my roomate and neighbors. It was rather relaxing to have some time to myself also. I was able to finish up some work which was good. I spoked on the phone with many many of my friends from back home which was nice. I hope to keep in touch with them, even though I'm kind of far. Everyone seems to be doing fine as the weeks pass. I did not have as much homework as I thought I would have, but I anticipate getting more as classes proceed.

Today was my mom's birthday!!! The interesting thing about it is when I asked her how old she was turning (I tend to forget sometimes), she did not even know either. She was born in India in a small village where they have no sense of the date or time. So she grew up always couting 365 days after the day she was born, assuming that was the correct day. When she came to America at the age of 18 (as she thought), she was actually 16 years old, and the birth certificate was a rough estimation of her actual date of birth. So when I asked her how old she was, she thought for a while and replied, "I think I am 49 years old, but I am actually not too sure". That sort of reply from someone when asked such a typical question was a bit odd!

Well today was the football game against University of Cincinatti. As expected, Penn State came out with a win!!! I am excited because I am going to be taking a flight home in less than 2 weeks! My parents especially are excited because they haven't seen me in so long! I am a little nervous however because the flight takes off from Philadelphia around 10:45 pm, and if for some reason the flight is cancelled, I will be stuck in Philly!!! Well today was a great game, so I am sure there will be plenty of celebrating tonight!

I knew when I was a senior in high school that my goal was to go to Penn State University Park. How could anyone watch a Penn State football game and not feel the camaraderie and excitement that the school eludes. The school’s reputation speaks for itself. I am now officially a freshman at the school that I have dreamed of attending for my entire senior year. Like many others, I arrived here both excited and scared with one question on my mind, “What do I do with my life now?”

I have always had very strong math skills so it seemed logical to decide on a major involving numbers. When it was time to pick, I came up with nothing but business. I have no idea what type of business because there are so many choices. The Smeal College offers eight different majors including Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, Management, Actuarial Science, Management Information Systems, and finally Economics. The two that I considered heavily were finance because I enjoy learning about the finiancial aspect of issues, and marketing becuase I am very outgoing and work well with people.

Now that I’ve arrived at college and I have a few classes under my belt, one thing has hit me. This is not high school. This will not be easy. I realized this when I walked into Calculus class my first day and was completely overwhelmed. College isn’t a joke. The teachers give assignments which they expect to be completed. They are not going to badger me to turn the work in. If I choose not to attend a class or turn in the assigned work, it is my time and money wasted. In the few weeks that I have been here, I have quickly come to the realization that while in college I must be dedicated to my work which will in turn help to guarantee me a better future.

The goal of getting into Penn State has been accomplished. The decision to choose a major has been placed on the back burner. I need to become acclimated to college life. When I feel comfortable enough with my classes I will begin contemplating which direction I plan to go. I am currently in the Smeal College of Business and thankfully know what direction I want to go in, although I am not 100% sure what specific major I want to fulfill.

In closing, I have found the teachers and staff at Penn State University to be understanding, patient and professional. Also the football games are the best sporting events I have ever been to. With that there is only one thing left to say "Let's Go State!"

Debate vs.Dialogue. In my opinion, debate is a more in depth branch of dialogue. Dialogue can be any form of conversation that has any substance what-so-ever. Whether it's discussing the weather, or talking to yourself, there is some form of dialogue taking place. Debate, although it is dialogue, has more of a specific definition. Debate occurs when any given topic has the slightest arguement. Whether it's what color shirt to wear, or what political party you choose to follow, debate is contraversial. Dialogue can occur without debate, however debate cannot occur without dialogue.

Staci and I discussed what we were going to do our final paper on. We came up with the conclusion that we were going to write about relationships. Both of us left a boyfriend at home to come to Penn State, so what better topic to write about!

09/14/2005

Today was a fairly good day, mainly becaue I spoke to one of my best friends on the phone for 2 hours to catch up. Her name is Judi and she goes to a small school in New Hampshire called Plymouth State. We always joke around because both of our schools have the initials PSU!! (But we all kniow Penn State is the real PSU!) Other than that, I caught up on a lot of my homework because I felt behind, especially in my readings for other classes. I am really excited because it is getting closer to the day where I actually get to go home and see all my friends and have a good time at Uconn and at my house of course. Well it is really late now, and I can barely keep my eyes open. Goodnight!

I just came home from a party that me and my friends went to at the University Towers. There were way too many people for the small size of the apartment. Somewhere during the party a lot of my friends were complaing that they were hungry so I went into the freezer and found some frozen Ellios pizza. I made about 4 pizzas and by the time I cut them up a rush of people bombarded me and grabbed the pizzas! It was very amusing and funny! We left the party and when we got back my roomate and I were still hungry since we did not technically get any pizza. I went online and discovered there was a Wings Over in State College. I got excited because back at home there is a Wings Over Storrs for Uconn and the good is excellent. We ordered some food, and spent the rest of the night eating and watching tv! I had a pretty nice night!

09/19/2005

Today a girl from my floor turned 18 so a bunch of us went out to eat on college ave. It was a nice change from the usual fresh express or dining commons. Afterwards, my roomate, who had previously ordered a cake from coldstone a few weeks ago, picked the cake up and we surprised Amanda (the girl whose birthday it was). A bunch of girls from my floor stopped in and we all just hung out. It was a relaxing day, I'd say.

Today was one of my best friend's birthdays. He goes to school at Uconn and he is having a blast! I called him up to wish him a happy birthday and I heard all my friends in the background having a good time and I felt so sad!!! I am going home this weekend but I know it's not going to last long and I am going to have to come back so I am trying not to get too excited. I hope everything goes well when I do visit however.

Hey everyone! I am writing from Uconn right now! I LOVE IT!!!! I'm having such a great time here with all my highschool friends and the new friends that they have made. Last night I arrived at Bradley International Airport around 11:25 pm which was great because the anticipated time of arrival was midnight! I traveled for 10 hours last night, but I guess it was worth it because I am happy to be home and see my family and friends. I am definitely not looking forward to the four hour car ride to Philadelphia then the six hour bus ride to state college! However, once I get to state college I am pretty sure I'll be fine again. Well, I hope everyone had a good weekend!!

I spent most of the day studying at the library for my microeconomics exam on Wednesday! It is my first exam, so I have no idea what to expect. I understand most of the material so hopefully it won't be too bad. It was a little upsetting to come back to college after a fabulous weekend home, but it became better once I went to dinner with a few girls on my floor.

How to get the best deal when bargain shopping in New York City.

1) Once in the city, find Canal Street. (Canal Street is famous for their bargain shopping)

2) Walk down the street until you find a hut that has jewelry, clothing, or purses that you like.

3) Enter into the hut with enough confidence to almost intimidate the hut owners.

4) Once you locate an item that you like, confidently ask the hut owner how much he or she is asking for.

5) If the price sounds unreasonable, which it usually is, strongly urge them to lower the price. (Example: If they are asking for 10 dollars, urge them to knock the price down to 5 dollars)

6) If the hut owner refuses, walk out of the hut with attitude.

7) In most cases, the hut owner will then follow you, agreeing to knock the price down.

8) If they do not do so, exit the hut and find another that is selling the same or similiar accessories. (Many of the huts have similiar accessories)

9) Keep urging until you get the price you want. Remember that you are the customer and the customer is always right!

10) Once you have made your purchase(s), enjoy your item!

Enthymeme

My dad is originally from India and came to America when he was 24 years old. Although he knows fluent English, he still has a heavy accent and a deep voice to top it off. Also, he has dark hair and dark skin, as many, if not most, Indians do. My dad's occupation is running our families local video store back in Connecticut. Around the time of the 9/11 catastrophe, the business began going down, and we began losing customers. One lady even yelled at my dad and told him to "tell his people to get the hell out of our country." There are two assumptions here: "Because a man has a heavy accent and dark skin, he is a terrorist, even if he is not from the middle east." and "All middle eastern men are terrorists." This is not true because first of all, not all middle easterns are terrorists, and second of all, India had nothing to do with the attack!

Today was a boring old Monday. I ate at West with my roomate and her friend, and food was pretty good. The weather here is still pretty warm, which is surprising. I came here anticipating the weather to be extremely chilly early on. I really have nothing else to write!

I was reading http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/SOD.CHAP4.HTM to learn more about the Cambodian Genocide. I was not to familiar with the topic until I read that given article, and I was in shock. A country with more than 7 million people lost nearly 4 million people to this disaster. The most shocking thing to me is out of this large number killed, much of them are children. The Khmer Rouge seem like such heartless people for doing this to such a small, helpless country.

10/11/2005 Causal Argument #1

I was reading an article on msn about a 12 year old student who brought a gun to a New Haven, Ct. public school. The school apparently did not have metal detectors and the parents and residents of New Haven are now blaming the lack of metal detectors as the reason for the student bringing a gun to school. The parents believe if there were metal detectors then the student would not have had the motive to bring a gun in the first place. A local citizen of New Haven argues against the paretns and claims that it was the student himself that was the motive to bring the gun in.

Hey it's Staci :)... just giving you a heads up that i am using your argument...have a good weekend at home!! .. cya monday

10/13/2005 Causal Argument #2

I came across an article on msn about a man whose mobile home caught on fire. His family was able to evacuate, however the 600-pound man was not able to because of his weight. Firefighters attempted to save the man, however his weight was a huge barrier. If the man had been thinner, then he would have been able to be saved. Eventually after the fire was put out, firefighters put the man on a stretcher and wheeled him out. If they had done this earlier, the man potentially could have survived even with his weight problem.

According to the article titled “Some 'alternative' remedies can harm kids” in USA Today, many widely available supplemental remedies from developing western countries can kill or sicken children. One example of such a remedy that may do harm to children are garlic, which although is said to lower cholesterol, may also thin blood, which can cause excessive bleeding in young athletes. Another example is Saint-John's-wort, which interacts with many medicines, for example lowering the potency of birth control pills. The pediatricians are saying this because they are trying to get parents to reduce the use of herbal products from developing countries. This article is being presented to parents who are thinking about using herbal remedies to help their children. They do not want children to be harmed in anyway, they want them to benefit from the medicine they take. An alternative idea that could be brought up is to make it illegal for these products to be sold or brought into our country, that way we don’t have to worry.

The argument is that alternative remedies from foreign countries can cause harm to children. Pediatricians are convinced that herbal remedies are not effective, and are trying to persuade parents not to use them on their children. A solid counter argument could be that some parents simply prefer herbal remedies because there are no harsh chemicals in them. Also, many immigrants may only feel comfortable with herbal remedies originited from their countries.

In this article, doctors believe that SIDS, sudden death of an infant, is caused from parents allowing their infants to sleep on their chests in their bed with them at night. By not having your child in your bed with you will lessen the risk of SID. There are other causes that may cause sudden death in infants the infant could suffocate on the pillows and other things in the crib with them while they are sleeping. This article is directed to parents of newborns.

The claim in this argument is that SIDS is strictly caused by parents allowing their newborns to sleep with them on their chests. There are no reasons in this argument but one reason that I came up with is that the baby may have too much pressure on their chest, causing them to suffocate. A counter argument is that there are many other reasons that SIDS occurs, and simply allowing an infant to sleep alone would not prevent it.

Remix of Stigmergy

The study of stigmergy was first thoroughly done by Pierre Paul Grasse in the 1950's. He studied termites and how the response of a termite to their nest could result in another action. Grasse stated that the cause for this response was a stimulant which triggered a termite's reaction to cooridate in building their nest. The study was a bit vague and unclear as to how stimuli could trigger such coordination. Students want to research this topic more because it is very crucial to other studies such as artificial intelligence and social sciences. This article in particular is important in explaining the term stigmergy because it provides a diverse definition and outlook on it.

Evaluative Argument #1

I came across an article on msn.com that was about the $340 million powerball, making it the second highest powerball in history. In a small town in West Virginia, powerball tickets are selling like crazy because 3 years ago a man from the same town won the nation's largest powerball. Local residents are claiming that their chances of winning are very high compared to those in other states. Their reasons are that "lightning will strike twice" and that the town is lucky. This seems very unlikely, and there are many counter arguments to this. The chances that someone will win the lottery in the same town is very unlikely, but it is the lottery, and everyone has the same odds of winning.

Evaluative Argument #2

An article on msn.com stated that black colleges were beginning to serve healthier foods in the cafeterias. Their claim was that obesity was starting to be a major issue with black college students. Their reasons were that many black students were beginning to tip the scale because of the many types of junk foods that are served at predominantly black universities. Such foods as soul food, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes are being replaced with veggies, fruits, and tofu burgers. It is unlikely that the food at the university is the only reason that black people are becoming obese. There are other options to lose weight, such as exercise, and more gym facilities. Also, it is questionable to think why this article is only focused on black universities.

What is Plagiarism?

In grade school, students are taught not to copy the work of another person without permission. In highschool students are taught that the only way to use another person's work is to quote it or there will be severe consequences. Plagiarism is taking the work of another person and simply "copying" it as if it were the work of their own. It is morally wrong because it is using somebody else's idea, and not giving them any credit.

FinalEvaluativePaper

11/2/2005

I am interested in doing my paper on eating disorders with BoreSta. We both have known a loved one who has suffered from an eating disorder, so it is a knowledgable topic for both of us. One of my best friends, at the young age of thirteen, was diagnosed with annorexia. Her name was Sara and she grew up overweight, and was always ridiculed as a child. When she entered into junior high school, she began realizing that all the girls were skinner than her and that she wanted to be like them. Sara began starving herself, claiming to never be hungry. Everyone began realizing what was going on, and she was taken to the hospital for anemia, along with many other illnesses. She is still in and out of hospitals to this day, and has yet to graduate high school because of this disease. I, along with Staci, want to write a paper on the experiences we've had and the ongoing issues of eating disorders. I hope to do some library research, as well as getting in contact with Sara, if possible.

11/3/2005

For the final evaluative paper, I, along with BoreSta, are going to be doing a paper on eating disorders. Both of us have experienced a loved one suffer from an eating disorder, therefor it was a informative topic to research and write about. We are going to collect sources, and interview people to compose a well researched paper. I would like to interview my friend Sara from middle school because she suffered from an annorexia when she was only 13 years of age. BoreSta will interview her friend, who also suffered from annorexia.

Wow, I haven't blogged in a while so I thought I'd save some time for myself and do just that. My weekend was great! I went to see a group called Penn Masala which is a group of acapella singers from Upenn who came to sing. Then I went to the after party at club love, which was a lot of fun.

I've been really busy trying to figure out my classes for next semester. Its a tight schedule for me because I will be transferring to UConn in January. I am transferring because I am from CT, and the cost will be a lot more affordable. Also, I have many highschool Co-op courses I took where I received 34 college credits, none of which transferred to Penn state. So at UConn I will be 2 semesters ahead! I'm kind of frustrated because I can't go home until Tuesday and most of my classes are cancelled Monday and Tuesday! I'm going to be so bored.

Wow, Sorry I have not blogged in a while. I have been really busy at home and haven't even gone online. Thanksgiving break was amazing for me because I got to see ALL my family and friends whom I haven't seen in so long. It was great being able to drive my car and just feel at home for a week. I ended up going home on the Saturday before the official break started because most of my classes were cancelled. My Thanksgiving dinner was great this year because I had lunch with my mom and her family and dinner with my dad and his family. It was double the food and double the fun! Now I'm back at PSU for about 2.5 weeks and then I'll be moving out officially. I'm sad that I'll be leaving such a great school but I'm also happy to be returning home to another great school.
