I am in the computer Lab and I was just remembering how stupid it is that the univeristy is limiting the amount of pages that a student can print for free. What about the students without computers or printers, what do they do? I have a 32 page economics review packet for my final and I get daily email notices of how many pages I am allowed to print. Is the university that starved for money that they have to charge students for paper?

12/11

Steelers WON!!!

12/9

Wow has it been a while. I can't get onto the Wiki from my PC, something about enabling the cookies on my computer. I have gotten the internet directions and have been trying to enable them, but nothing works. So here is what I would have said. We are going to the Orange Bowl. I really hate Tommy maddox for officially screwing our wildcard chances. Ben had a bad game (verse the Bengals) but he will recover and all turnovers considered we stayed in the game. I can't believe that VT lost, I would rather play them. I love the snow and wintery weather. Oh and then there are finals...

11/29

Only two more weeks of classes!

11/28

It's December and after Thanksgiving so all I listen to is Christmas music. I really love Christmas music.

This link made me smile.

This is hilariously cute.

11/20

Tommy Maddox needs to retire.

11/18

I found out yesterday that I will be living in supplamental housing all year long. Which is good, because I like my floor and did not want to leave South Halls. However, one of the four of us is moving out, and we planned on replacing her with a nice futon and TV setup. But that won't be possible since they are replacing her with a different and unknown fourth person. Not to be terribly rude, but I would rather have a futon.

11/14

Tommy Maddox- Steeler's second string QB was 4/7 with 22 passing yards on Sunday.

Antwaan Randle El- Steeler's wide receiver was 1/1 with 51 yards and a touchdown.

Something is just not adding up here, especially since it looks like Maddox is starting on Sunday

11/13

The steelers are rapidly running out of quarterbacks and look again like they will have to rely on Tommy Maddox. But judging by tonight's game Antwaan Randle El might be better choice. Atleast we still have a spectacular run game.

11/12

Hard to beleive that in less than 2 weeks it will be Thanksgiving. After that it is just two short and one insanely long finals week until my first completed PSU semester. Time really flies in the Happy Valley

11/8

I have taken the advice and looked into prejudicial rhetoric as a topic, and have decided to change my proposal. My old proposal is still posted (under ObesityProposal) and my new proposal is under PburghClarkProposal -which used to conatain my obesity proposal.

11/6

What a weekend- very backwards in terms of college football. VirginiaTech LOST and UCLA got completely torn apart by AZ. Both are very good for PSU, becuase basically our team is amazing- 6th in the nation according to USAToday. Steelers won too, but I hope Ben Roethlisberger comes back soon.

I commented on MarCar proposal and PennyPacker proposal draft today.

PburghClarkProposal

Though you've already posted a proposal draft, I encourage you to give more thought about "double standards." Sometimes, having a solution isn't appropriate, but trying to understand is. With that in mind, you could do some kind of critical analysis of prejudicial rhetoric. How does it work; why does it work? What are its effects? Does it just hurt those who are its object? Take a look at Judith Butler, "On Linguistic Vulnerability" in Excitable Speech: politics of the performative. It's hard, but I think it would bring up interesting issues for you.

ObesityProposal

11/4

Ok- double standards are not as easy to remedy as I had hoped. Turns out that society is pretty hard to change. Therefore while I could write for 10 pages on them and their causes- I have no remedies. NOT too feasible. New topic: obesity in America.

11/4

The causes of double standards.

1- Stereotyping: people of society today stereotype and 'label' other people. Often they judge solely on one action/ appearance, and have no real basis for their decision of a person's character.

2- The old ways of society where there are separate roles and demeanors for groups of people.

3- The stubborn and unchanging way of life of most people.

4- Society's views, communicated in large part through the media.

Remedies:

...to be continued...

I was reading the Daily Collegian today and stumbled across an article that was about style. In a nutshell it says that girls typically love to shop and strive for style and guys do not know why. This started me thinking about what happens when guys are stylish. In the cases that I have seen, when a guy truly has deliberated style everyday-he is labeled as gay. Stylish girls are normal, but stylish guys are gay- that screams double standard. So then I continued to analyze society and came up with tons more- more than enough to fill 10 pages. So I am off to think about causes, solutions, and feasibility.

11/2

Ok first off, the Steeler game was way too close for comfort. I would like to know where our defense was before the last 30 seconds- when they finally did their job.

Second- I was reading the syllabus for 11/2- particularly the link about our curriculum. I agree with the whole technological age thing, and am all for advancement. But is the old fashioned hard copy paper method of classes and books ever going to go out of style?

I want to marry Ben Roethlisberger. ElizabethBlog

10/29

Basically Penn State football is amazing. 8-1 woo hoo

10/27(later that night)

Yeah I knew that VT would win, and now I owe my brother five dollars. I only wanted them to lose out of spite- if we are not undefeated, they shouldn't be either. And my brother makes sure to rub in the fact that he is undefeated. Don't get me wrong, we are amazing and I really love 7-1, but I never hear the end of it from my brother.

10/27

Desperately hoping VT loses, but knowing they are going to win.

10/25

What a crazy day. I wake up and walk to an 8am in the rain. When I leave my 8am there is big, wet, snow flakes falling from the sky. The first snow of the year and it actually stuck. I really love the snow, and hope it continues, and doesn't go back to the typical screwy PA snowing one day and 80 degress the next.

10/23

I define plagerism as the stealing of somebody's else's work and claimng it as your own. If a phrase is borrowed- then it needs to be cited in order to not be plagirism. Same thing with facts that are not common knowledge. Simply rephrasing someone else's ideas, without a citation, is also plagirism. Taking someone else's idea and expaning upon it is not plagirism, as long as you cite the original idea. Plagirism is basically the stealing of someone else's ideas.

PSU killed Illinois. I felt bad for Illinois, becuase it was their homecoming.

10/19

There is an article from the New York Times that is evaluating governmental responses to the bird flu. The article states that governments of all countries are not handling the bird flu epidemic well. Countries are stockpiling vaccines that could help to prevent and cure the bird flu. However, vaccinating while the virus is still mutating could be terrible, becuase the virus would develop an immunity to the vaccine. Another drug is being stockpiled that can lessen the symptoms but not cure the virus. These solutions are only available to the rich countries, which is bad because the poorer countries need the most help. Vaccinations can be produced in about 4-6 months. The author does not feel that any of these solutions will work well. His evidence is scientific and so are his reasons. A counter argument for this claim is that there are not many other options so there is not much that any government can do. Stockpiling a vaccination and administering it after a full blown human outbreak is a possibility.

10/19

There is an article in the USAToday that deals with teens views on sex . The article says that teens have taken a much more casual view on sex and intimacy in realtionships. The evidence is statistical and was provided through many studies and surveys. The article says that teens take a more casual view on sex, which is bad, and that this casual view can hinder serious and lasting relationships later on in life. The quality and quantity of serious realtionships will diminish if this casual view is held, becuase teens are given a false view of intimacy. The reason that there are fewer serious and lasting relationships in life could be due instead to the casual view that society has on divorce.

10/17

I found a causal argument on childhood obesity. In this article they made a correlation between obesity (particularly in children) and the amount of TV they watch. They did a number of studies and came up with statistics that show the more TV a person watches, the more obese they are. I think the audience they are aiming for in this article is pretty much all people who are effected by obesity. Their solution would be to limit the amount of television you watch and replace it with physical activity. I think that they make a good point, but I don't believe TV is the only cause of obesity. They could also address diets, genetics and just lifestyle in general.- MarCar

clAIM: watching too much TV can cause children to be obese

reasons:statistic proof

counter:genetics and eating habits could also cause childre to be obese.

This article is about how the location of low income housing is preventing people in poverty from ever getting a better job, because most new jobs, and schools are built out in the suburbs not in the heart of the city where most low-income housing complexes are located. They blame poor planning as the reason that all the housing is built in the core of the city. They also claim that 40% of the adults are unemployed and not even looking for work. I think that the what actually caused this is good planning on the part of the businesses. I wouldn't want to build a business near a drug infested crap hole. Everyday I would have to worry about me or one of my employees getting shot everyday. And thats intelligent to build a school there. Thats where I would want to send my kids. They would get their lunch money stolen from them at gun point. -TowleyBlog

clAIM: living in an area of low income housing prevents an advancement in socioeconomic status

reason: can't find ways to better statues, because most new jobs and development are built around suburbs not inner city

counter:personality of those who can't advance status (i.e. they are lazy)

10/11

In this article from The Daily Collegian the author is making claims that fast food consumption is the cause for obesity in America. She claims that Reasons: Americans eat out 4-5 times a week and mostly these include fast food restaurants. She claims that the cheap easy meal solution is calorie laden and the cause for obesity. The super sizing and large portions do not help the situation. The evidence is based on adding calories for the typical meals and comparing them to the recommended calorie intake for Americans. This article was written to inform college students about the dangers of just grabbing a quick bite, on the run, at a fast food restaurant. The audience seems to be college students. Another possible argument is that obesity is due to a particularly lazy and inactive lifestyle taken on by most college students.

10/10

In this article on  cholesterol levels and elderly Americans the author is claiming that even though obesity in Americans is rising, cholesterol levels are falling. The article claims that obesity and factors, such as smoking, cause high cholesterol. The evidence comes from government studies, which show that new drugs reduce LDL levels, which raise cholesterol. This argument is being made, because obesity and cholesterol levels are pressing health issues for many Americans. I would say that the audience intended is any elderly American who is obese or has high cholesterol levels. A counterargument could be that there are other factors than the drugs that are lowering cholesterol levels. Changes in lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, could also contribute to a decline in cholesterol levels in elderly Americans.

What a weekend! In 48 hours I saw the Happy Valley at its best- defeating OSU, and at its worst- cleaning up thrown up from an extremely drunk friend.

My Cambodian website. This is basically a website that outlines the tragedy of the Cambodian Genocide. There was a lot of death, suprisingly terrible statistics- like 1 in 7 people died. These stupid people come in and think they have the right to kill almost an entire popullation and call it a revolution.

10/6

Actually in our smoke out there was no 'real smoke' like from an actual fire. There was a smoke machine that filled the hallway. The smoke was thick and hard to see through with a really bad smell.

10/5

Today our dorm had a smoke out. It was a royal waste of time. They filled an entire hallway with smoke and had us walk through to see what it would be like in a real fire. This reminded me of an ad that I used to watch on TV all the time when I was little. Can anyone complete this jingle?

"Scruff McGruff- Chicago Illinois-..."

That's the oddest thing. A fire drill with real smoke? Anyone get sick? TheKemBlog

Wow- I got locked out of my room today at 2:00. Four girls in one room and not one of us was at our door with a key. When you go to get another one they basically make you sign your life away, and a person can only keep an extra key for 48 hours- it is really an extremely intense procedure. First IM flag football game today- we got killed. But in our defense we played half of the club basketball team and it was the first time we had all played together.

What makes an 8AM economics exam better- Walking to the forum in a torrential downpour. College exams are really a lot harder than high school tests, which sucks terribly. I really hope Penn State wins tomorrow. But it is going to be a tough game…

assumption: all college students are alcoholics

She is a college student, therefore she is an alcoholic.

1- There are plenty of college students that aren't alcoholics.

This is a bit upsetting. Check this out: Clock error added 52 seconds to Steelers-Pats game

Up until class today I was fine with my definitional argument paper. However, now I am doubting the counter-argumentativeness (I think that I made that word up). I don't think I can revise more if I try though so I will just turn it in and see what happens.

9/25

The Patriots suck and I am depressed.

9/24

Today Penn State really lucked out on the football field. We are 4-0 but I am not sure we deserve it.

9/23

Parent's weekend- enough said.

9/21

Favorite line, from my favorite poem "The Goring and Death", by Jose Garcia Lorca:

At five in the afternoon.

It was exactly five in the afternoon.

Lorca is from Granada, Spain and was a gay poet. He was assasinated by the military government at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. No one knows who actually pulled the trigger. No one wanted to take the blame for killing such an influential and beloved person as Lorca. So up to today, as far as I know, it is still a mystery.

9/20

As I have written about before I am in a supplamental room with three other girls. And three of us get along really well, but one of us is starting to annoy the rest of us. She is pretty much an only child, who thinks that everything needs to always go her way. She never contributes any food to the room, but eats everyone else's. We are all getting fed up with her attitude that because she is who she is, everything needs to go her way. We eat when she wants and where she wants, we watch what TV she wants, and the room is quiet when she wants it quiet. I am starting to put a stop to this, but it almost seems easier to give in than to fight her.

9/19

I realized today that one of the pluses of communal bathrooms are the random bathroom conversations. Each time I go in to the bathroom someone is in there, and I always talk to them. Even if I don't know her name I talk to her, and the conversations are always so random. We talk about the stupidest things that are sometimes bathroom related and sometimes not. Today the topic of choice was the terrible placement of the soap dispensers near the sinks. Other popular topics include how annoying the absence of paper towels is.

9/17

As I look around my room I don't think that it would be possible to shove one more thing in here. We are four girls living in one room (about 2x the size of a normal dorm room) and we have no closets. FOUR GIRLS AND NO CLOSETS. We were proivided with one 2.5 foot rack to hang all of our clothes on. Not to mention that we have absolutely no storage space at all. We have no wall space left- there is something on every inch of the perimeter of the wall. Our TV just sort of floats in the middle of our room and the cable wire is just floating right along with it. Someone trips over the cord every day. Oh and our door has a big window in it, so anyone walking by could see in. BUT don't worry the university provided some transparent purple paper to cover it up. I am not knocking the university- I love it here, but I never thought that I could miss a closet so much.

Well my family is here for the weekend. When I get a visit I don't just get the parents. My grandma, aunt, uncle, cousin, brother, and sister all came. It was nice to see them, and it was really nice to eat a meal that was not dining hall food. Anyway it is really late and I am really tired.

9/15

Ok so I had quite the night last night. My roomie had a huge blister on her heel. It formed in an area she had iced the night before. Before the blister there was red puffy area that never went away. So the blister grew and grew, until it was bigger than a quarter. So we got our RA to take a look, and she called a cab and we headed to the emergency room. My hurt roomie and one of my other roomies. We waited for about 30 minutes, then they took her back. After that, she waited an hour for the doctor. The diagnosis: 2nd degree frost burns. It is basically a second degree burn caused by a cold substance. It turns out she reused an ice pack that was not supposed to be reused and the antifreeze in it somehow burned her skin. So I have been here three weeks and already have been to the ER- what a

night!

Dialogue vs. Debate

I think that there are distinctions between a dialogue and a debate, but essentially they are the same. A dialogue can be defined as an “informal exchanging of views.” All things considered a debate is exactly the same thing, but in a debate the focus is more on persuading party to one’s opinion. The most common place that I find debates is in politics, when a candidate is trying to convince the American people that he is superior. There is a mediator and a winner involved. In a debate there tends to be a clear cut winner, it is a competition. In a dialogue there does not always have to be a winner. I took, from our discussion, that a dialogue is more about presenting an opinion. There was never a mention about anyone winning; however, there could be a winner. A dialogue seems much more informal than a debate. In the end they seem to have the same essential concept of presenting opinions, but there are differences.

9/10 (later in the day)

My family acquired season tickets to Penn State football this season. There are two of them on the fifty yard line, pretty high up. It is unfortunate though, because they can't ever make it here to use them. This leaves me with two tickets to just about each game, and they are so hard to sell. Everyone wants student tickets- I usually can't even scalp them. It's crazy. So if anyone ever needs to tickets on the fifty- let me know, with the exception of Ohio State, because my life has been threatened if I give those away.

9/10

I was thinking this afternoon, as I walked back from the game, how wierd it is that I don't miss my family. I mean I miss them, but I don't have this extreme desire to go home. It almost scares me a little. I thought that once here I would miss my family. I have always been family-oriented so I thought that going to college would be a lot harder. I am happy to say that I have settled in- and love it. Some of my room mates can only talk about how much they miss home, but I don't feel that way. I am glad to be out of my hometown- college is the next step, and a very necessary one.

9/9

This whole business of remixing our narratives is a lot harder than I had anticipated. I think that I have attempted to remix three times now and each time I have hated it. So in terms of writing I am kind of burnt out, hence the three sentence Blog.

9/8

Remembering to blog is the first step, now having something to write about when I remember is a different story. So how about a topic as mundane as the weather. I am enjoying the nice weather we have been having at State College, but must admit that I am psyched for the snow. As summer turns to fall, turns to winter- my excitement grows. I love the snow and can't wait for the first flakes to fall. It's so calm and sparkly, I love the look and feel- so bring on the snow.

9/7

This regular blogging is really going to take some time to get used to. I just realized that it is Wednesday- the first day this week I am blogging, and that I am way behind on my five times a week. I have found just tonight that I am not having a very easy time dealing with three room mates. It is too hard, in fact impossible, to please all four of us at once. We all have different reading and studying styles that are seeming to clash with each other. I would say that I would study in our floor's lounge, but guess what the four of us live in it.

9/4

To get ready for the game I attended the pep rally- man can Joepa really inspire. I selected a blue and white outfit and got together with my equally charismatic friends. We just had a great time and screamed out heads off. In the end it was all worth while, because we won. I continue to enjoy PSU and love all the school spririt and pride that is present at the games. I was unaware that in the student section people stand the entire time, so my feet hurt like crazy as I walked home. It's a little strange to think that I call a dorm room home, but in reality the dorm is my home. I will spend the majority of the next four years on this campus- Home Sweet Home.

Oh my gosh, this took me a really long time to set up. Now that it is set up I am not sure what to write about. So, I am just going to leave you with my thoughts at this time. I am very excited to be at PSU and cannot wait for the game on Saturday.

>>>>So, what did you do to get ready for the game? TheKemBlog
