2/7/06- I trying to throw a little birthday bash for my roommate, who is also one of my good friends. All the minor details of who I should invite as well as what everyone should bring. However, a problem that arise is where should I throw this party. Maybe, I could throw on the floor, but I could get in trouble for that. Hopefully, I can find another place.

Comment on proposal: I am not sure what you are tying to define. You need to make your subjuct stand out.

2/6/06 (Proposal)- Most recently, Kenneth Lay, CEO of Enron and his lawyer Jeff Skilling have been talked about in many newspapers in the past week. They could be facing 25 years in prison. For those who don’t know why, let me explain.

We live in a post- Enron era, a period of time where more and more high-ranking business executives and their colleagues are finding themselves being hit by big lawsuits, and being thrown in jail. As well as, being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who helps protect investor’s money, and ensure the integrity of the markets. This issue of inappropriate corporate behavior has also brought to attention the issue of Corporate Governance. Executives of large corporations, such as CEO’s and CFO’s play a leading role in Corporate Governance. These individuals have the power to dictate whether a company does well or not. Plus, they are entitled to manage shareholder’s investments, which can pose many problems. I believe men such as Lay are only concerned with their own wealth, and will create financial schemes to accomplish that. In addition, the reason why the spotlight has turned towards corporations is because of the problems that have arisen within their inner operations, which are all surrounded by the powerful and greedy men that run them. Problems with Corporate Governance occur because senior management, such as CEO’s and CFO’s do not care about their stakeholders within the company, but only the amount of profits they receive, stock options, and the notability they gain for having their companies perform well. More importantly, these individuals are not forced to uphold social responsibility and put many people at risk.

1/31/06- The Article describes a Western women being kidnapped by Iraqi militants. Her name is Jill Scott, a western reporter who wrote for the Christian Science Monitor and other Iraqi and Arab groups. She was a freelance reporter in the region. Most importantly, a video was released to Al Jazeera television. The group called themselves the “Renegade Brigade” and demanded through their hostage, that Iraqi women should be released from American custody. These type of incidents are a direct result of the American involvement in Iraq. I feel they will continue to occur while the U.S and other countries are fighting against the war on terror. Yet, I believe our troops cant pull out just yet, because there is so much left to do in Iraqi, mostly notably the rebuilding process. However, Bush could be pulling out a large number of troops from the Middle East region. This could have a positive or negative effect on the insurgent’s activity. I hope American troops can return home safely from the problem in Iraq.

1/29/06- One word that would characterize the world today it would be that of terrorism. It really was not such as significant topic until the horrific terror attacks of September 11th on the World Trade Towers. As a result, much of the world has had to deal with the grueling task of fighting these so called terrorist or also known as “freedom fighters.” Yet, the reading was not very clear on what exactly terrorism was. Some definitions labeled it as causing harm to potentially innocent people to influence a government to act in a certain way, or also defined as a state of being terrorized. On the other hand, many other organizations, such as the U.N. have come to their own definition of terrorism and are creating ways to strengthen their intelligence agencies in efforts to stop future attacks. However, more importantly are the actions the nations of the world are taking in fighting against this rising threat. I believe intelligence agencies should implement new strategies for safeguarding local borders and its peoples. I also believe our involvement in Iraq has escalated the terrorist violence in the world. Maybe the U.N. should hold talks concerning the threat.

1/26/06 - The State of The Union Address given by President Bush was clearly inspirational and also displayed a great sense of pathos. After the horrific September 11th attack on American soil, the U.S. was in a state of shock just like the rest of the world. Yet, George W. Bush was able to salvage the U.S. spirit and inspire the nation saying, “ In all that lies before us, may God grant, us wisdom, and may he watch over the United States of America. To get his point across, Bush was able to put his feelings and emotion within his words. This helped most Americans feel more connected to one another. The president was able to tap into that emotion, which can be used to uplift the spirits of many Americans during this dark time. I think it would have been hard for Bush to find the right words to say, but he did a very good job in summarizing a clear plan of action to be taken.

1/24/06 (Declaration of Independence) – Our country was not founded on the belief “ every man is created equal.” However, as decades have past, many things have changed. Changes for the better in the way people are treated, voice their opinions, respecting privacy, and most importantly safety and security. I feel these beliefs and ideas were the defining themes of the Declaration of Independence. Human Rights should never be taken for granted because some people are not as privileged. Many of my classmates are Americans. As Americans, we believe our powerful nation dictates much of what goes on in the world. Guess you could say we make things happen. This is what we (Americans) are most notable for. Thus we come back to the Declaration of Independence, this could very well be the most powerful document ever created. Something, we as all human beings believe are inalienable rights. However, as I said our country was not founded on the belief that every man is created equal. A prime example would be the

Civil Rights movement. This was a time when many minorities, most notably black people, were not allowed to utilize their rights of freedom of speech, life and liberty, and vote until after the document was created. I believe, and most people should agree this was wrong and a low point in American history. On the other, the Declaration of Independence has allowed the U.S. to provided compensations for those that did not receive their inalienable rights.

1/22/06- ( FDR FOUR FREEDOMS)- FDR’s speech about Americas four freedoms was very education and powerful, the way it rallied the American people into looking more closely at its precious freedoms. FDR begins by stating the alluring threat many evil assailants will and have committed. I feel this is a powerful technique because it opens the eyes of the possible dangers. He continues to elaborate on the idea of the U.S.A defending its precious commodity, Democracy. He explains “ future of the U.S.A democracy involved in the events far beyond our borders.”

These events taking place greatly deal with the wars in the past and that of the impending war as well. He calls upon his fellow Americans to rally behind one another. FDR provides facts about production of ships and aircrafts, and the strength of our Army and Navy personnel.

On another note, I think that he speech did not appeal to me as much. Probably because I did not experience what went on during that time. However, I did feel it provided a powerful message concerning our freedoms of speech, religion, well-being, and from fear of attack from other nations.

1/20- The claims I stumbled upon had to deal with the amount the average shopper spent on holiday gifts. Most importantly, one claim supported the fact that shoppers are not to keen about holiday shopping, however the other focused on the other side; shoppers would spend more on holiday gifts.

“More than half of people who shop for holiday gifts say they dislike dealing with crowds and hunting for the perfect present.”

“Shoppers will spend about $421 or 57% of $738 holiday budget, on family gifts.”

These two statistics can be used to oppose each other. On focusing on the positive aspect of spend, while the other hints on the negative side. As a result, claims such as statistics can be altered and changed in many different ways to reach an audience such as the American people. Though, the messages these claims are based upon can be those of good and bad.

1/18- I recently, read Donald’s Blog and found we have some of the same things in common. He is a freshmen at Penn State as am I. I also was timid in attending PSU, yet I have found that this school is amazing, and filled with culture, and not the mention the party scene is also a plus. So, we both agree that Penn State is a good school to be attending. Secondly, we both like football, although I didn’t have season tickets, I was still able to be at the majority of most games this season. Thirdly, I hope to be successful in the business field.

1/16- The letter Martin Luther King writes in jail does not come off as being abrasive or radical. But, can be viewed as his way of expressing his opinions and views in a peaceful way. I believe Dr. King wanted to address the bigotry, which flowed very strong through the blood of many of the white people in Birmingham, and hopefully be able to change it. Dr. King wanted desegregation in many public schools, restaurants, and public bathrooms. He believed through nonviolent actions, such as marches, the tribulations many blacks went through would soon be dealt with in a civilized manner, which both blacks and whites could come to an agreement. For example, King created the Direct-Action program to create a crisis, so that negotiation must be started. However, King also felt change would come with time. Yet, many whites would provide the “Wait” excuse, which meant a change would be hard to come by. On the other hand, many laws would be changed if blacks would wait, yet wait usually turned into “Never.” Furthermore, King describes as being an influential person. For example, Gandhi, Jesus, and Socrates were all influential people who were considered extremists in their individual respects. In efforts to change something they believed in. Consequently, King’s message is important to the black population as well as other races; “ We will win our freedom because the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God are embodied in our echoing demands.”

What Up! My name is Nana and I am originally from Allentown, Pa. However, my parents work overseas, so I am constantly flying back and forth. But, that’s another story, so I wont get into that. I am a freshman at Penn State and went to high school in New Jersey called Blair Academy. Boarding school is not all that bad, but it could have been better. I enjoy all types of things music, sports, hanging out with friends, reading sometimes, and whatever else keeps me occupied and not thinking about school. I am laid back and try not to worry so much about things. Hopefully in the future ill be successful in the business field.
