RoseBlogFinalPaper

May 1, 2006

I'm glad that my paper is all finished up for this class. English isn't my favorite subject, but this class wasn't bad. I'm more worried about the speech class I have to take. I am really bad at talking in front of people. I'd rather just write my thoughts on paper. I guess I'll need to speak in almost any profession I go into, especially because I'm thinking about business. I'm glad i don't have to worry about that yet though.

I found a CD that I really like and that's uncommon for me. I usually just listen to certain songs. It's rare that I'll actually like an entire CD. I've recently become a little obsessed with The Fray's album How to Save a Life. I love the singers voice, and I can't wait to buy the CD when I get home.

I recently found out I won't be going on vacation this summer. Unfortunately that means all I have to do this summer is work and take summer classes. That should be fun. My whole life I have always looked forward to summer and getting out of school. This is the first year that I really don't want summer to come.

April 30, 2006

I'm getting pretty stressed out about my finals. I feel like i have so much to do this week. I'm going to miss Penn State and East Halls so much. I feel like I should just enjoy my last couple days here, but I also feel like I just need to study all the time. Hopefully I'll be able to find a good medium and have a good last week here.

April 23, 2006

My first Blue and White game wasn't too great. it poured all day, so my family didn't make the trip to State College. The game was not really interesting at all and it was really cold and rainy. We ended up leaving at half time and going back to our warm dry rooms. It was an interesting experience anyway.

April 21, 2006

I just went to see some football players rap to kick off blue and white weekend and it was really amusing. When I'm watching the players on the field, I think of them as just good football players. I never really consider that they are funny and can do other things. It was really amusing and hilarious. I'm glad the rain held off for a little bit. I'm upset it's going to rain for the game tomorrow though. My family is coming down and everything. Hopefully it won't be too bad out. I'm sure we'll have fun no matter what though.

April 20, 2006

I had to schedule my classes last week and I'm definately not looking forward to next year. I have a feeling it's going to be really difficult. I wish I had some sort of direction that I definately wanted to go in. I'm also taking a class this summer. I took my freshman year for granted. Everything's going to be downhill from here.

April 19, 2006

I had a nice Easter weekend. I got to see my whole family and escape the whole college scene for a little bit. My grandma has a huge easter egg hunt at her house on the day before easter and it was fun to go and see everyone. The weather was gorgeous. I love being around my family and celebrating traditions with them. I felt like I was a little kid again.

Proposal for Final Paper

It is something that goes on in every college campus in America. The majority of college students participate in the activity at one time or another. It's binge drinking, and most colleges cite it as one of their top problems. Yet on college campuses, especially one as large as Penn State, it's almost impossible to control. Why is it so prevalent among college students? Everyone knows that it has risks, and they've heard of or experienced the consequences of binge drinking. Nonetheless, people continue to do it. For the number of students who binge drink every weekend, there is a relatively small amount who suffers serious consequences. It's a risk that most people are willing to take. Is it as bad as universities make it out to be? Should this be one of its top priorities? Should they focus their attention on other important issues?

Beer companies sponsor college football teams. Tailgating is a celebrated part of the college atmosphere, especially at PSU. A very comprehensive study by Outside The Classroom of Needham, Mass., demonstrated that college students begin in their first semester to drink heavily, doubling the number of binge drinkers in the first semester and more than halving the number who are abstainers. During this first semester, many college students are in dormitories and are not members of fraternities or sororities. (USA Today) The police's effort to curb this underage drinking is to hand out underage drinking citations. From my experience, this does little to help the issue. People pay off their fines, attend some classes, and lose their PA license when they probably don't drive down here anyway. Few, if any, actually stop drinking. If anything they just learn how to avoid the police and keep from getting another citation. People should be well-educated on binge drinking before they eneter college, and they should be able to base their decisions on this. Don't get me wrong, people who are being belligerent or passed out on the street should be punished. But police shouldn't waste time trying to get people for underage drinking when they're simply just trying to walk back to their dorms. Underage drinking are facts of college life, and i don't think anything can or will be done to change this. The most anybody can do is educate people on the effects of binge drinking, and let them make their own decisions based on that. The major problems that occur from drinking are from binge drinking. I think the solution to solving these problems are to teach students responsible drinking.

April 4, 2006

I have been really unproductive today. I want to get all my work done, but I am a huge procrastinator. I'm having trouble thinking of a topic for my final paper. I don't know of anything that I'm interested in enough to write 10 pages about. I've been hoping something would just come to me, but I can't seem to think of anything. This always happens when I have to write a paper. I'm terrible at thinking of topics. I think it's harder and more strenuous than actually writing the paper. Well, I'm working on it.

April 3, 2006

I really can't believe it's April already. It's been so nice all weekend and it actually rained today. It feels like spring, and I can't believe how fast this year has gone by. I feel like finals are so soon, and I don't even want to think about leaving this place. I'm going home in 2 weeks for easter, and I feel like I really don't have alot of time left at all. I want to make the most of the little time that I have here. I'm getting in as much time with my friends, fresh express and creamery ice cream that I can while I'm here.

I mean I'm sure we can mostly all agree that communism is bad. I don't really feel that it is as big of a problem nowadays. I mean it was a major factor in World War II, and it can definately cause problems and it still exists today. The manifesto is an example of bad times and attepts to explain it. Communism is a very complex and and difficult thing to explain, but the manifesto did a good job.

So it's St. Patrick's Day today, one of my favorite holidays. I'm only fifty percent irish, but I am very proud of my irish heritage. In my hometown, we have a huge St. Patrick's Day Parade the week before the actual holiday. So I end up celebrating St. Patrick's Day all week. It's so much fun. Everyone is so laid back, and they just want to have a good time. I enjoy dressing up in all green and listening to irish music. it's a fun day to celebrate the irish heritage with family and friends.

Causal Argument Proposal

In my paper, I am going to argue that ethanol fuel is not the best solution for our countries' dependency on foreign oil. This is an important issue because gas prices keep rising, and these price changes affect all Americans. I want to try to reach all those who are wondering whether or not buying cars that can run on ethanol is a good investment, and those who are wondering if the ideas the President Bush proposed in his State of the Union address can work. It affects almost everyone, so people should be very concerned about the effects of this transition. Certainly, ethanol is good because it can be produced in America and it's good for the environment. The fact is that it will probably cost alot of money, and the more efficient solution is to raise the gas tax. There are very few places that sell ethanol fuel, and it would be a very difficult and costly task to make ethanol widespread at gas stations across America.

The plea to replace gasoline with ethanol fuel sounds good, but is it really the best solution. The problems are that the only place that has begun really selling the fuel is the Midwest. It also contains less energy, and you’d have to buy a new car to use it. In the end, is it worth all the extra work? Will making corn-based ethanol fuel increase the price of corn? We have to explore the positive and negative aspects of using the fuel and choose what is best for our country. This decision can affect many aspects of American life, and we need to be aware of what will be the best option.

Notice how this is an evaluation argument! Ethanol is not the best alternative fuel. Think about how you can transform it into a causal argument. What would ethanol cause if it were adopted?, etc. TheKemBlog

Response to Thinking About Political Leaning In Rhetoric:

I feel like i would be pretty close to the middle of the political spectrum. I'm conservative about some issues, but liberal with others. I think the letters in the collegian you can definately tell their politcal leanings. They are usually arguing pretty strongly for or against an article. On the news they are a little less biased. Alot of the news stories are against the side of the government or big business sometimes because their audience is more of the average american. They look into stories about what the government is hiding and how big businesses are trying to scam you because that is what American people want to see.

For my birthday, my friends bought me tickets to a concert. The concert was last night at the Crowbar. I've never been to a concert in that type of atmosphere and it was an interesting. It was small and I got pushed into the mosh pit for a little bit which was kinda scary, but for the most part it was fun. i would go to another concert like that. I prefer more laid back concerts but I would definately go again. Now I'm more prepared because I know what to expect.

Evaluation Paper Proposal:

It was a television show infamous for being about absolutley nothing. It didn't have very well-known actors or actresses, and it wasn't very popular when it first started. So what made Seinfeld the sitcom that America couldn't get enough of? What made Seinfeld one of the most unique, loved, relatable sticoms in American history?

It's amazing how the show was watched and loved by so many different groups of people. Based on the stand up comedy of Jerry Seinfeld, it portrayed a type of unprecedented comedy genious.

Few professors of urban affairs have ever peeled the delightful, depressing and deranged layers of the Big Apple with the precision of Jerry Seinfeld and his predecessors in New York sitcom legend, Ralph Kramden and Archie Bunker. (Harden) The show brings to light all the things we think and obssess about in our daily lives, but never really think of explaining to anyone. The way that Seinfeld portrays these awkward moments in life is so funny, because although at times they take things to the extreme, most people can relate in some way or another to one of the characters in any given episode. All the characters are extremely self-absorbed, yet lovable at the same time.

Seinfeld also accomplished something that very few sitcoms have been able to do. The show was able to go out in the peak of its success. This accomplishment is rare, and it made audiences really appreciate the true genious of every single episode.

My paper will evaluate what made Seinfeld one of America's best sitcoms, and how it's characters contributed to it. I will also discuss how the show was unlike any before it, and no sitcom after it really compares.

Okay. You're claim is that Seinfeld is one of America's best sitcoms. Sitcom is the genre, which helps establish the criteria. Using past sitcoms to define those criteria (as you imply) is most likely a useful technique. TheKemBlog

Response to The Declaration of Independance

It was interesting to hear all of the arguments for our nation to be independant. It's hard to think of a time when we were not independant. We are now such a powerful nation, its weird to think that we were once ruled by England. The arguments seemed to cover everything. It's a very in depth evaluation.

So yesterday was my roomate's birthday. It was fun we went to Chili's for dinner and it was good. The only problem is that I ate entirely too much. My birthday was a week ago so I ended up eating out alot last week and the week before. I tend to eat way to much when I go out to restaurants. It was fun though, we had a really low key night with some close friends. Tonight we're probably going out but it's really cold. That's about it for now.

I have come to realize that my life is basically just a string of awkward moments. My life is all about awkward conversations, either ignoring people or saying hello to people who aren't looking, tripping when getting off the elevator, making awkward eye contact with someone who looks like someone I might know but I don't really know at all, speaking in an unnecessarily loud tone while on my ipod, losing my I.D. and other important items, attacking people like Paul Posluszny and asking for a hug, getting lost somewhere on campus every day, etc. I've come to embrace the fact that my life has and always will be awkard and I'm going to have to accept that. Fortunately i surround myself with friends who are awkward like me, so I don't feel so stupid when I do awkward things.

Proposal:

Some people think of home as simply a place where they live. One of the definitions for home in the Oxford English Dictionary is, "A dwelling-place, house, abode; the fixed residence of a family or household; the seat of domestic life and interests; one's own house; the dwelling in which one habitually lives, or which one regards as one's proper abode. Sometimes including the members of a family collectively; the home-circle or household." I think that a home is much more than that. The word home means alot of different things to many different people. For the first 18 years of my life, I called Scranton, Pennsylvania my home. My house, friends, and family were all there. I lived, worked, studied, and made memories there. Now my view of home has changed. I still and always will have Scranton, but State College is my new home. To me, a home is somewhere comfortable and a place of refuge, and it is necessary. But what about the homeless and those who have lost their homes like those in New Orleans? Some homeless are only temorarily homeless until they can get a home. Others are chronic homeless, and their home is the streets. Hurricane victims in the south lost their homes, and every structure they associated with their home. Yet people want to move back to New Orleans and start over. Evacuee Alvin Seymore said about living in a hotel in Texas ,"I didn't feel like an evacuee, a refugee. I felt like an abductee. I was taken to parts unknown. I didn't like that." (Easton) People just have a need to be in an enviroment where they feel home, whether it is a concrete place or not.

I like the idea of your topic, but be very careful in the wording you decide on. You are describing how a "home" is more than just a house. It can be a place like a cown or city, like in the example you gave. But then you started talking about homeless people. To homeless people a certain area on the streets can be considered their "home", so technically they would be houseless, not homeless. The terminology can get a little confusing, so be careful. - Nick.

Today I decorated my room for St. Patrick's Day. Some might think it's a little early for St.Patty's Day decorations, but it's not for me. I'm not really a fan of Valentine's Day, but I love St. Patty's Day. In my hometown, we have a huge St. Patrick's Day parade the week before St. Patrick's Day. I've been going for as long as I can remember and it's a big part of my life. I'm only 50% irish, but everybody's 100% irish for one day out of the year and it's so fun. I love every part of it, and how everybody let's loose and acts crazy for this one day out of the year. I know it's more than a month away, but my decorations are up and they probably will be way after the holiday. They make me look forward to home and the parade.

February 5, 2006

So last night me and a couple friends decided to go see the movie "Brokeback Mountain." We thought it would be interesting to see with all the buzz surrounding it. Some parts of the movie were really dragged out and there were long periods of time when nobody spoke. For the most part though I thought it was a good movie, the actors did a really good job and the story was interesting. I've never seen a movie quite like it. I would recommend others to see the movie just because it's unique and the acting is great.

I read the article in the USA Today titled "Crowded Houses gaining attention in suburbs." The Article was all about how people in suburbs are complaining because they think their property values are being jeopardized. Other people view it as an anti-immigrant issue. Several cities are considering lowering the amount of unrelatedvpeople allowed to live in single-family homes. Most of the families are Latino immigrants, most of them day laborers who can't afford other housing. I think these complaints are partially racially motivated. Similarly European immigrants in the 1920s and African-Americans in the 1960s suffered from discrimination. Overcrowding in certain cases can be dangerous and insanitary for the people involved, but i think the people complaining in these cases have an underlying rascism for the most part. They should just leave the immigrants alone and not let them be thrown out onto the street.

It's interesting how there is no set definition for the word terrorism. It seems fairly simple and I wouldn't think it would be hard to define, but apparently people have different views about what it means. All the definitions seem to have a common theme, but they all have a different viewpoint. Many words can be looked at in this way, from different viewpoints and contexts. This is an example of a word that you can define in many different ways and its meaning can be different to different people.

Response to President George W. Bush's Address to Congress(2001):

George W. Bush's address to congress was interesting to read because I remember hearing the speech on television right after September 11th. I felt like parts of the speech were very similar to FDR's Four Freedoms speech. He talked about the attack in the middle of a big city on a peaceful morning, affecting thousands of civilians was unprecedented. The speech was made at a time when Americans were vulnerable and feared for their safety. Bush utilizes this fear and provides us with an answer. He attacks Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Ladin, and says the way to get back to the way things were is to get rid of these terrorist organizations. He is careful to say that we respect the Muslim religion, but not the terrorists and the governments that support them. Bush is trying to evoke emotions of pride for America and fear of terrorist attacks from his audience. He makes a very strong statement: "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." This statement only gives Americans 2 decisions. We can be prideful and stand behind our country, or we can be supporting the terrorists. The whole speech is trying to play off the unstable state of hte country, and use it to rally support for a war in the Middle East.

January 24, 2006

Response to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights(1948):

This declaration is a document that is crucial to our human rights. Minorities and those discriminated against have fought long and hard for the rights that this document gives. I think that most of the articles in the declaration are common sense. It is obvious to me that everyone deserves equal rights in society and in the law. It is hard for me to believe that people did not have these rights just 58 years ago, and even though our society has progressed alot since this document was published, some of these common rights aren't followed today. In America most of these articles are followed, but in many other countries people still do not have these basic human rights. For the most part though this document is crucial to the our lives, and our ancestors fought very hard for us to be able to live with these rights.

January 22, 2006

Response to FDR's "The Four Freedoms":

FDR's address to Congress uses several events throughout history to support the protection of the United States from foreign dictators. He states that it is an "unprecedented" time in history in that the U.S. security has never been as severely threatened as at this time. He uses patriotism for America to support the protection of our democracy. He argues continually that "the safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders." He argues justice and morality will win out in the end, our nation being just and moral. He maps our a plan for our industries to make supplies to protect the country. FDR doesn't want his men to fight purely to fight. He wants "the stamina and courage which come from the unshakable belief in the manner of life which they are defending." To get money yo support the cause, FDR suggests putting patriotism ahead pocketbooks. He uses the idea that Americans are moral, just, patriotic people to help gain national support for his cause. Roosevelt wants to change the world to imitate the U.S. and to follow four essential human freedoms. These four freedoms are the things that every human wants in this world. They want to be free, economically stable, and safe. By using values that are important to Americans such as these, he made a good argument for fighting for the safety of the country.

Rewrite of Donovan's Introduction in DonovansBlog:

My name is Rosemarie Coyne and I am an undergraduate student at Pennsylvania State University. I was born in Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In my spare time I like to watch television and talk to friends. I also like to play soccer and go out on weekends. Studying and doing homework are two things that I don't mind doing. I enjoy going to the beach and laying in the sun. I also like to watch movies sometimes, especially if it is on DVD because I just like to rent it and relax in my own house. I graduated from Scranton Preparatory School with a class of 165 students. Only a few graduates from Scranton Prep are enrolled in Penn State. My room mate is from North Penn. I hope to learn a lot in this english class and have a lot of fun too.

Response to Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from the Birmingham Jail:

Martin Luther King's letter from the Birmingham jail was an excellent intelligently written letter about the oppresion in Alabama. It was really interesting to hear a detailed interpretation of the whole ordeal from Martin Luther King Jr. himself. I really felt like i was in his shoes, and I could completely relate to how he was feeling. He didn't just argue about the way he thought things should be. He made arguments for both sides of the Civil Rights Movement, and showed that he had really thoroughly thought about every aspect of the whole situation. He decided not to take the easy way out. He felt it would be far more rewarding in the long run to fight the civil rights fight nonviolently, and I see that as something very brave. Overall, the article really displayed the intelligence and bravery of Martin Luther King Jr. to me, and I really thoroughly enjoyed reading it especially today.

Personal Narrative:

Well my name is Rose and I was born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania. I'm half Irish and half Lebanese and I have a huge family. My dad and his whole family are obsessed with Penn State, so they taught me to love Penn State from a young age. They even bought a bus and transformed it into a Penn State bus that plays the “Zombie Bounce” song which they bring to every home football game. Needless to say, I always knew I wanted to go here. After my first football game, I fell in love with the whole atmosphere here. I always knew that if I got into Penn State I would go here, and I haven't regretted that decision at all yet.
