4/25/2006 THON

I think THON is one of the greatest parts of Penn State. I was fortunate enough to dance for 16 long but fulfilling hours to show my dedication to THON and to what it means. My fraternity raised over $200,000 in an effort to find a cure for kids with cancer. I spent many hours on cold corners canning for money only to have it all come together at the THON dance making me realize how importnt those hours were. I feel good that I was able to contribute to THON and hope to dance the full 48 hours next year.

4/25/2006 Price of books

The price of books at Penn State are completely absurd and unnecessary to students. Most books are not even useful and just about every book you can buy should not cost what the price tag says it costs. What makes the situation worse is the fact that returning books only returns to the buyer a fraction of the price that does not come close to the original price paid. If students were better compenstated at the end of the year for returning their books than they would have more money to buy books the following semester. The price of books needs to decease and the amount of money you recieve for returning books in the end needs to increase.

4/25/2006 Nittany notes

Nittanty notes, although I discovered them midway through the year, are one of the best tools that Penn State offers. It targets students who do not wish to attend their large lecture classes because attendance is not mandatory. These nittanty notes provide the notes in a well written form, better than the form that average students could have written themselves, to study from. By using these nittanty notes, attending any class at all is not necessary because you have the semesters worth of notes right infront of you for a low price of $13. These notes proved to be crucial in passing many exams that I have taken.

4/25/2006 Problems with East Bathrooms

Living in the dorms has its perks, but it also has its downfalls. Among them in the fact that the bathrooms in East are not how they should be and many changes should be done to them. The toilet tissue is the cheapest and worst kind of toilet paper that money can buy which means the quality of the toilet paper should be upgraded. Also, there are no paper towel dispensers in the bathrooms which makes it impossible to wash your hands following washing them. These changes must be made to make the living conditions in the dorms more suitable to the students.

4/25/2006 Facebook

In my opinion, Facebook was one of the most useful tools that I have used this freshman year or many reasons. To sart, it allows me to meet new people without actually seeing them in person. It also connected me to the other kids on my floor and I found people with similar interests. It is a major factor in procrastination when you're bored and want to see pictures of what people did over the weekend which would be on their profile. Facebook has been a very strong asset this year to many people.

4/24/2006 Response to modest proposal

A modest proposal is a very funny way to solving many problems that are wrong with society. Among the problems are starvation from lack of food and overcrowding for the growing population. The solution that is proposed, however gruesome, does solve these problems. He propses that people eat the young children to decrease the population and solve the hunger problem. Even though this idea would never work in any society because of how morally wrong it is, it does solve the problems at hand and would probably work, even though no one will ever know.

4/24/2006 Stigmergy

Stigmery has a very long and complicated defintion that is unnecessarily wordy but comes together to make one general point. That point is it does not depend on the worker but how the work is done that determines the final outcome. Any worker could replace any other worker because it is not the worker himself that makes the job what it is but the way that the work is presented to him. If it presented in a well formed and constructive manner then the outcome will be prosperous but if the work is presented sloppily then the work will not be as good.

4/23/2006 Communist Manifesto

The Communst Manifesto is a very long and interesting article that highlights the main points of communism and how it is supposed to work. It states that bourgeoisie can do many thins including regulating the means of production to control the population and controling the towns and cities that are under communism. I do not agree with communism and think that democracy is the best policy that should be used and that this article, although well written, highlights points that I just do not agree with.

4/23/2006 Political leanings in politics

In this political spectrum, I am on the rightist side for many reasons. i am for a strong military and and am also for the military using its power and going to war if necessary. Also, I am not part of the poor laborers so therefore I am not on the leftist side. However, I am not for control on abortion and women's rights because I feel a woman has the right to choose whether or not she has the baby. Furthermore, I feel that the rightist side shows more sensible judgement rlating to the issues listed.

4/22/2006 YOP class part 4

YOP class is so unnecessary for many reasons. To start, you do not learn anything except that the policies for drinking in Pennsylvania are absurd and the police can arrest you for the smallest and worst reasons such as your eyes are watery. Also, you take a final test the last day to "pass" the course but the tests are thrown out immediately after anyway and the questions have very little to do with alcohol itself. The questions are about other drugs and pills which makes you question the necessity of the quesions in the first place. Overall, the YOP course is a waste of time and money and needs to be changed to be more effective.

4/22/2006 YOP class part 3, the video

During the second YOP class you watch a video that shows a typical college kid taking shots over a period of time. He takes one shot every 15 minutes over a 4 hour period. At first he is still concious and can answer the questions rationally that are asked to him by the cameraman. After 2 hours he starts to become drunk and his answers are filled with curse words and deragotry comments about women. After four hours he is completely drunk and eventually falls off his chair and passes out in the corner. The next day he is asked about how he felt during the interview and he is upset because he realizes that he made a fool of himself and pledges to not get that drunk ever again.

4/22/2006 YOP class part 2

There are four classes that are mandatory to attend in the YOP program. The first class is the most fun, if that is possible, becuase it is more of an informatory class in which you play question games the whole time. You propose a question and everyone in the class must answer and this rotation continues until everyone in the class has asked a question. You get to meet new people and learn the different ways in which each of them were arrested for their underage drinking. Some stories make you heavily question the policies at Penn State and make you dislike the police that much more.

4/22/2006 YOP class part 1

YOP, or youthful offender program, is a class given to students who are caught underage drinking. It is another option rather than pleading guilty or innocent and it is erased from you record after a year of staying clean. It consists of four class that are four hours each in which you take part in activities that are hardly helpful or effective. After doing these four classes however you are free to go after you pay a hefty fine of $325, but it is better than have a record that will neevr go away.

4/22/2006 Gettin an underage

Gettin an underage was a bad time in my life. It was within the firs week of school and I was just getting used to the Penn State party scene. However, I let college parties get the best of me and I was careless in my actions. By stumbling down the sidewalk an undercoer cop car pulled over and proceeded to grab me as if I was resisting in the first place. Then after questioning i was given a breathalizer which I did not pass followed by a written citation. I did my time in a YOP class and ever since have been clean and careful with my actions.

4/21/2006 The Gazilch

The gazilch was the name of our task and no one knew what gazilch meant. All day we questioned what the meaning was and how it would relate to us. When the time came, we realized what it meant and it was nothing that we expected. It was about being one and if one person fell than we all would fall. The importance of unity was emphasized and we all realzied that unless we were to act together we would never succeed in anything we did.

4/21/2006 Pleading the 5th

Pizza party number two started out slow with a few speakers of what was wrong so far with our work. Then the bomb fell as we were yelled at because someone slipped information that was supposed to stay secret within the fraternity. For over an hour we were questioned and ridiculed by the brothers for leaking secret information until someone confessed they said it. However, no one actually said anything and it was merely a test to show that severity of secrecy within the fraternity and how important it is to not allow other people to know what goes on inside our house.

4/20/2006 the machine

The machine was the first of many pizza parties that took place during pledging. Uncertian of what was going to happen, we stood on the line anticipating what the rest of our night was going to be like. After a long introduction song in a dark and smoke filled room, we listened as speaker after speaker presented themself and knowledge that we would need for the rest of our pledging journey. After what seemed like an eternity, we were done and our pledging career began.

4/7/2006 Proposal for final project

For my final paper I will be discussing athletes, both at the professional level and the levels below and how the game has changed as the intesity is raised. Professional atheletes are madeout to be role models and are looked up to by many as their heros and people they want to be like when they get to that point in their life. However, what many do not realize is that professional athletes do not necessarily want to be considered a role model in many situations and it is not as easy as people think to become a role model. In many cases and not by choice the athlete is put in unfair situations that can change their reputation and in turn tarnish both their reputation and life as seen by the public. College athletes however do not have this problem and because of other scenarios have a diferent outlook on the sport they play and on how they are looked at by the public. There are many things that need to be changed in veiwing an athlete at any level and how these ahtletes are looked at by the public needs to be changed. I will be showing just how these atheletes are looked at now and how they should be looked at in a more fair and justified way. Their lives and careers need to be better understood before they are judged by the public that considers them role models.

4/3/2006 Propsal for proposal argument

Obesity is a growing problem in the United States that is slowly but surely becoming a worse problem each day. There have been many studies that have shown that the United States is among the fattest nations in the world and we are most like frowned upon by other nations for this fact. It starts at a young age and if it is not stopped than the problem of obesity grows and carries over until the young people become old obese people where it is that much harder to get better. The only solution lies in stopping the problem early on and making sure it does not carry over until the later stages of adulthood. Exercise and proper diet are among the many techniques that can be educated to people so that they learn of the differet ways to prevent obesity and stop this growing and unpopular trend that is plaguing our nation.

3/20/2006 Proposal for causal argument

In my causal argument I will show the devasting effects that steroids have had on not only the sport of baseball but our society as well. It is important to know that steroids has become a major problem and concern in major league baseball because more and more players are being caught using these steroids. The main problem is steroids are illegal in all sports and using them to enhance your performance is an embarassment to the sport. People like Barry Bonds and other great players that have been recently charged with using steroids are haivng their distinguished careers tarnished and their reputations in jeapordy. Ever since Jose Conseco revealed the names of many players who used steroids the game has not been the same and all the records that have been set by these players are now being questioned to whether or not they should be allowed to be records or removed from the books. It is a troubling issue that has gained much controversy with no agreeable solution just yet. The problem of what should be done needs to be dealt with because many issues now need to be resolved and the game will never be the same.

3/15/2006 Response to Rwanda crisis

I already knew a large part of the history between the Hutus and Tutsis and saw the movie, "Hotel Rwanda". The fact that it was being covered up while it was happening is awful to think of how many lives could have been saved. There should have been a settlement between the two groups even though the Hutus were exacting revenge on the Tutsis. Too many innocent people including many children were killed in this bloody civil war.

3/15/2006 Response to "My America"

I thought that this article was written very well and enjoyed reading it. It was very interesting seeing how he praised America as he did even though he is not from America himself. It is rare to see people from other countries talking well about America. Usually America is despised by many people from other countries so it's good to see favoable comments.

My real Spring Break

My spring break started slow because I was recovering from the stomach virus. I did not feel well that weekend so I decided a trip to the doctor was necessary. After leaving his office I learned I had bronchitus and my spring break was now officially ruined. I did not even feel well enough to watch a movie with my friend because of the constant coughing and stuffed nose. I went bowling on Tuesday and recieved a massive blister on my bowling finger which prevented me from doing the only thing I was able to do which was bowl. The last two days before I came back to Penn State I felt a little better and was able to hang out with my friends on my last night. Overall, my spring break was very boring and mierable.

Night Before Spring Break

The night before I left for my spring break vacation I was diagnosed with the stomach virus that my whole floor had recently been experiencing. After a few trips to the bathroom I felt there was nothing left in my stomach and maybe I could get some rest. Little did I know that the virus did not stop there and my pain continued through the night. After getting 20 mintues of sleep in intervals I would be woken up again only to pray to the porceline gods.

My Spring Break Plans

I had set my sights pretty low for this spring break. Knowing not many colleges have spring break at the same time I knew there would not be many people to socialize with. My plans were to call my old friends that were still in high school and party with them on some nights. On other nights I planned on doing nothing more than watchin a movie and getting rest. Little did I know that my plans for this spring break were not going to be the way I planned.

Stem cell research is a hot topic that is quickly gaining nationwide attention. It is a new tehcnology that has not yet reached its full capabilities because not enough research has been given to the issue. Stem cell research has not reached its full potential as a possible life saving treatment. The medical benefits are extremely important to the patient because it would be the difference between life and death. People generally do not understand to the extent of how useful stem cell research is and can be. It has been banned in almost all of the United States except for a few select areas. The main idea of stem cell research is for creating new cells to help potentially cure a myriad of diseases. New cells are injected to replace the old damaged cells and therefore rid the patient of the disease. The problem arises when it people realized that the stem cells come from unborn baby fetises. If one is against abortion they won't be favorable for stem cell research. However, by knowing the extent of the benefits from stem cell research and realize how vital this research is to millions of people can one truly understand how important continued research is.

You're claim isn't yet clear. Are you going to argue that stem cell research should be legal in the US? That would be evaluative because legality implies approval. You'll need to get clear on the criteria at work in this argument. Do the opposing sides have the same evaluative standards? If not, how will you argue that your criteria should be more valued in this case than the others? And you need sources. TheKemBlog

Declaration of Independence

In This great document we see many lines and passages which would be the foundation for our society and be the beginning of something great. However, this great doucment does not hold true for everything it says. It claims we have the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happines, but do we really have these rights to the fullest. You can be executed and have your life taken away or not be helped when you are trying to pursue happiness. To what extend to these certian supposed unalienable rights hold their full meaning to because the line is very grey to the correct meaning that was made so many years ago.

Kem and his Phone

There are many problems that have arisen that are the result of one main problem which is that you do not have a cell phone. It is almost unimaginable to not have a cellular device in today's society for multiple reasons. It makes life so much easier and less complicated unless you are deciding which phone to buy and which plan is best for you. Since you do not have a phone now it is highly recommended that you jut purchase a simple phone that allows you to talk and maybe provides for internet access if you really feel like stepping into the 21st century. A basic plan that allows you and Holly to talk for free would be ideal and is definitely available with many different companies. Not having a cell phone today is comparable to not using indoor plumbing when it was made available.

Time Wasted in the Computer Lab

With time running out and the hours were closing in, I found myself in the computer lab at approximately 3:00 AM. With half my paper done and the other half to go, I began bringing up familiar websites to finish what I had begun. What I did not count on was the willingful attitude of the girl next to me to make my experience as far from pleasant as she could. It started slow when she gained my trust by helping me load my previously written pages. Then, the annoying began as my chair was pushed and notebooks and various objects were being thrown at me. Finally, she ended it by pouring water all over me and deleting what progress I had made. After enduring this torture for over 2 hours I decided to leave and return to my room to finish my paper, only hours before class.

Night in the Laundry Room

On a dark and windy night, twenty brave men walked to the house to embark on a journey that they had never seen before. As they entered the house, they were blindfolded and led into the laundry room. Once they reached the laundry room their blindfolds were removed and they packed into the tiny room. Then the music started to play and the door opened at random times to allow ice and various mixtures to be thrown into the room. As a finally, 350 crickets were added to the room and the lights were shut off. Complete blackness but not complete silence was the result of this action. They struggled to kill what they could not see all the while the horrific music played over and over again. When daylight broke many hours later, the door was opened and they were released back out into the world.

Proposal

For years the debate has raged over the proper way to deal with drugs in our country, but one drug stands above the rest as the most controversial in it's class. Marijuana has been argued upon for years debating if it should be made legal or not. Marijuana has been defined as nothing more than a cannabis plant that is used by more than 70 millions Americans. According to polls, a quarter of the voters were for the legalization of medical marijuana. Only a few places thus far has chosen to try the legalization approach and allow it to be bought in stores with a proper ID. This is in effect in California and recently Denver, but the trend is on the rise. The Clinton Administration spent over $1,000,000 towards a review to show the helpful benefits from medical use. Money is wasted on the "War on Drugs" because it is mostly used on targeting marijuana when there are more harmful and dangerous drugs that need to be removed from society. In my paper I plan to define the benefits, statistics, definition of medical marijuana in our country.

February 07, 2006 In response to your proposal:

Marijuana is a very controversial issue, and in my opinion, a very good subject matter for this type of paper. You seem to have a clear intent in where you're going with your paper. But are you talking strictly about medical marijuana, or legalizing it all together? Those are two very different subjects, and I'm a little unclear on which one you're talking about. You might want to find some more sources, including maybe one or two against your stance, to show it's weaknesses or your tolerance of other ideas. It looks like you have a good topic and you're on your way to a pretty good paper.

Angry over the win

The Pittsburgh Steelers won Superbowl 40 and they deserved to win because they were the better team in the end. However, even though I am an Eagles fan I was completely against the fact that the Steelers were going to win. As an Eagles fan at Penn State, I face constant criticism over my football team from the Steeler fans. This problem has been going back and forth for years and will continue to do so because of the even split fanbase at this school. The fact that the Steelers won only means that they now have bragging rights over the Eagle fans for a whole year. I will not be able to deal with this and I'm angry that it has to be this way so I just hope that the Eagles can make a comeback next year so we will have the bragging rights.

Superbowl

In my opinion, I thought that the Steelers were the better football team going into the Superbowl. They were the favorites to win and looked to be a sure thing. However, past history has shown that the favorite does not always win and it is the underdog that prevails in the end. Unlike the past though, the Steelers held on to their lead after a shaky start to beat the Seattle Seahawks. They did deserve the win because of the tough road they had to follow just to make it to the title game. They had to beat tougher opponents and therefore were the stronger and better team in the end.

New York Times article

In the New York Times, there was an article about the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met has had a stance to not relinquish a vase, the Euphronios krater, to Italy. For more than 30 years Italy has claimed the vase as illegally brought to America and stolen from one of Italy's tombs many years ago. This policy of giving back the vase will now raise new questions from other countries demanding some objects to be returned. I think that it was right to give Italy back their vase because this settles a 30 year dispute. On the other hand it could result in them giving back many of their prized possessions.

Night of Feb. 2nd

My night on February 2nd was both stressful and fun. It started out by greeting the new rushes, the potential pledges, and showing them a good night. Next I had to tape up the windows with trash bags and bring up tables to prepare for our weekly Thursday night party. My job that night was to work the stairs to make sure no strangers walked up them and stole thins from the brothers' rooms. The party was not very eventful and I thought the night was not going to go well until midnight struck. A flow of people came into our house and the party truly began. It wasn't until the cops came at around 2 did the party and my night come to an end.

What terrorism means

In my opinion I think there is no exact definition of the word, terrorism. There are too many different means that people have but in general there are many similarities between them. Most dictionaries and references write that terrorism means to intimidate in some way over others. It infers that terrorism as intentionally committing crimes against others which is commonly how it is referred to today. I think terrorism means to commit crimes to bring fear to another country because it needs to happen on a large scale to be considered terrorism.

Response to Bush

I think President Bush if very powerful in his speech. He easily appeals to our national values of security and love for our country. He also acknowledges our sense of grief and anger over the 9/11 situation and therefore promises that justice will be done one way or another. He points out that other countries are also mourning for our lose and it will generate a positive motion of people who want to see action taken which is what Bush is claiming he will do.

Response to Declaation of Human Rights

I believe that this declaration was written very well in being able to persuade people that it is a good idea. They use varies techniques to appeal to the senses such as unity and hope to convey postive feelings about the situation. With one feeling safe and unified against opposition, the chances of them accepting such a declaration is inevitable and therefore this was very effective in getting approval from many.

Response to FDR

His message starts out strongly by addressing the previous hardships that the United States has faced in the past. He noted the Civil War along with other battles the our country has faced. He says that throughout history the United States has faced opposition, and it will continue to do so regardless, however he will make sure that under his command as President the United States will never be defeated by this opposition and will continue to prevail. He cites examples where other nations were ruined by opposition but states that he will make sure we are always prepared and will not give in to others.

Response to USA today picture

I am responding to the picture of a collection of watches bearing the image of Saddam Hussein on each of them. Some could make the argument that he a narcissist and his picture on all of his watches shows just that. On the other hand, it could be that he uses his money to put a picture of himself on the watch for personal reminders. Also, the fact that he is in jail does not mean his belongings should be for sale. The fact that they are for sale in a random jewelry store means his possesions

Hey, everyone, my name is Jason Robert Rosengard. I was born in Philadelphia, PA, and I have since lived in Voorhees, NJ . I am a freshman at PSU, and I am in my second semester. I have no idea what I want as a major, nor do I even have the slightest idea of what I want to eventually do for a living. I enjoy movies, music, and video games, and I play the golf, although I'm not very good. However, when one plays golf around a group of individuals who don't play golf, they will think he/she is good anyway, so it all works out in the end. I have a spectacular sense of humor. I say spectacular because of the range of humor I enjoy; sarcastic, childish (and I mean Disney childish), perverted, and anything else that anyone else may find funny. That's me in a nutshell.

Martin Luther King jr

Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of his word, and for that he ended up in Birmingham jail. He was "invited" there by his peers because he was chosen to lead a rally, a peaceful rally. He also states that he is in jail because of the injustice that was done to him. By citing passages from the bible,Martin Luther King Jr. appeals to the Christian community and gains their support and sympathy from them. When he speaks, he gains the trust of the people who listen to him and appeals to their emotions in a varity of ways. He is nonviolent in all of his actions and for that he is always seen as the victim of the crime because he does not preach hate, only equality, which the people who threw him in jail could not understand.

About me

Well, my name is Jason and I'm a freshman here at PSU. I'm still currently pledging which is a heavy burden but hopefully it won't be that much longer. I play a variety of sports, none for the school teams, and I mostly enjoy just hanging out with my friends because I'm a very easy-going person and I don't like to deal with drama. I usually wear hoodies and sweatpants cause I like to be confortable and usually don't like to get dressed up unless I go out.
