“Wow, I’m so drunk right now.” Everyone has heard someone use the word drunk before, more than likely referring to alcohol. The word drunk is a word that the meaning has become lost and changed as society has changed. Drunk was not always as closely related to alcohol. Now the word drunk almost exclusively is referring to alcohol. Drunk is usually describing a person and is defined as drinking to excess or being intoxicated. Penn State students tend to overuse this word, using it to describe themselves or others at any drinking activity. Penn Stat students must know what it really means to be drunk. The meaning once known for drunk has changed as society made different demands on the word.

"stat=state. I think you use the word 'drunk' too many times and it gets over-used. -MitchTurow"

You start two sentences back to back with "Penn State students..." for the second one, you may want to use "they". I also agree with what MitchTurow said, that you use the word 'drunk' quite often. Try replacing "drunk" with "it" or "the word". -LaXer

The word drunk once could be defined as being dominated by an intense feeling. An example might be: The girl was drunk with joy. The first thing someone would assume after hearing that, especially a college student, was that a girl was intoxicated with alcohol. In the past society would understand that the girl is under the influence of joy. The interpretation of drunk depends largely on the audience that interprets it, which in this case are college students. College students as well as the majority of the population would relate the word drunk directly to alcohol. Alcohol is just one way of being drunk or one thing that you can be under the influence of. Drunk is mostly used in combination with describing a person.

I like this example of being "dominated by an intense feeling" -LaXer

When describing a person the word drunk can be defined as drinking in excess or being intoxicated. Drunk can also mean the impairment of judgment or dominated by an intense feeling, not only from alcohol but also from other things such as excitement and fear. Yet you can be almost certain that if you are on a college campus and hear someone using the word drunk to describe a person, they won’t be talking about someone that is so excited that it’s affecting their judgment. The word drunk is now commonly used to describe someone’s state of being after drinking alcohol. The problem is that the word drunk is used too often. It’s being used to describe someone who had anywhere from very small amounts of alcohol to excessive amounts. The word drunk is used a lot for bragging, students often make sure that they let others know that they are drunk. Then they often follow this up with stating how much they had to drink that night, these numbers are often greatly exaggerated. For this meaning of drunk to work, the point at which a person is now drunk must be determine.

"good examples, I think everyone can relate to the show-off mentality people get after getting drunk. -MitchTurow"

The previous paragraph should end in "determined" not "determine". -LaXer

It is very difficult to attempt to put a value on the quantity that a person drank in a certain amount of time. Each person is different based on weight, age, concentration of alcohol drank, or even what they had to eat that day. The police determine when you are drunk by the amount of alcohol that is in your bloodstream by giving a breathalyzer test. This is a great way for the police to get an accurate reading of the alcohol that is your body, but this does not help the rest of society determine when they or others are considered drunk. It may seem impossible to have an exact point at which you say someone is drunk, but there are many signs which can help determine that someone is indeed drunk. When a person is noisy, has slower reaction times, impaired balance and movement, and doing embarrassing behaviors. If some or all signs listed are evident then the person is clearly drunk. Now that drunk has been given some boundaries and a list of signs have been identified it can be defined.

The word Drunk can be used as a noun or an adjective. It was formally known as being dominated by an intense feeling, but now has been narrowed down to only relating to alcohol. Although rarely used, drunk will still be recognized when used to in a situation not involving alcohol to describe an intense feeling. Drunk is not to be used when until a person has some or all of the following signs: noisy, has slower reaction times, impaired balance and movement, and doing embarrassing behaviors. The person being described must be clearly intoxicated before drunk can be used properly. A correct use of drunk would be as followed, the drunken man fell to the ground in the middle of the street and began crawling to the other side. This sentence would be correct with the definition drunk because it clearly shows that the man was intoxicated and had impaired balance and movement.

"Sometimes you capitalize drunk and sometimes you don't. Really good paper. -MitchTurow"

The sentence, " Drunk is not to be used when until a person has some or all of the following signs: noisy, has slower reaction times, impaired balance and movement, and doing embarrassing behaviors," does not make sense grammatically. -LaXer
