4/6/06 FINAL PAPER PROPOSAL
When I heard about the final paper I had no clue what I was going to write it on, then last week my roommate walked in and was talking about this guest speaker she had named Gary Yourofsky who spoke about veganism. She told me she was going to be a vegan. I had no idea what a vegan was so she told me about animal cruelty and slaughter houses. Basically a vegan doesn't eat any meat or any dairy products. At first I though this girl was crazy, but then after she told me some things and showed me some video's online, I started to feel the same way. I can not say I'm going to be a vegan, I still think that is crazy, but I have cut down and stopped taking it for granted. Most of American's have no idea what is going on at these slaughter houses. It's amazing to see how heartless these people must be in order to carry out the tasks they do as a DAILY JOB! I can talk about some things that happen but nothing gets to a person's heart as much as watching a video. This is one I couldn't even watch all of(http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video.asp?video=meet_your_meat&Player=wm&speed=_med). As American's we are taught that animals are put on Earth for food and are inferior, but animals deserve don't deserve to be crammed into a factory not ever breathing in fresh air until the last few hours before death. More innocent beings are killed in one year than all humans in the past five thousand years! The largest killer of pigs in the world gets paid eight billion dollars per year by killed 1100 pigs AN HOUR! In order for this cruetly to stop happening, all humans would have to stop eating meat and dairy products. This is not a logical task. To tell the truth, I can't think of a solution to the problem, but I do know something needs to happen. Since not many people know what is going on at these factories not many people are thinking of a solution. Even by reducing the amount of meat and dairy products a person takes in can reduce the amount of cattle needed to be slaughtered each day. It is amazing how many years a person goes in their life without even thinking about what happened in order for them to eat their chicken sandwhich from KFC. There is a problem with the killing of millions of animals, but the biggest problem for me is the way the task is carried out. In order for a person to eat their chicken sandwhich from KFC, chicken are in an over crowded dark room and over fed to the point where some can't even stand up because their bodies are too heavy to lift. Many chicken will end up just going crazy, having seizures and dying before even leaving for the slaughter house. The chickens are then THROWN forcefully in to a crate and shipped to the slaughter house where they are hooked up to a machine by their legs while they are still alive. In the machine they are dipped in steaming water to remove the feathers from their bodies. If the chickens are not dead by this point their throats are then slit. It's amazing how much pain an animal has to go through just because it's the fastest and cheapest way to get the "job" done. These are only a few facts about what happens in order to eat meat. Dairy is a whole different story. Since dairy is a very long and complicated subject it will be left for the 8 page paper! The hole only gets deaper from this point but it's a message I feel is important for the rest of the world to hear.

4/3/06 A MODEST PROPOSAL
I noticed the writer sounded very intelligent which is a very good thing, but then there is the problem that the audience may not understand completely. I think I understood what he wanted to accomplish but even I was a little confused. I think his idea was a good one, but probably will not happen. I know that it seems like the children are a burden to their parents because they can not provide for them, but that doesn't mean they don't love their kids. It is good that the children will learn a good work ethic and would be better than living a life of begging and starvation, but they would also be apart from their parents (thats what it sounded like but I'm not sure). It's a very big problem that definatly needs to be addressed but I don't know how many people are going to go for this idea and it also isn't as easy as it sounds. Over all he had good intensions but also didn't intend on going through with the idea himself. I don't know who would but it would take a lot of work.

I have a complaint about computers. Everyone is so reliant on computers these days and sometimes there are programs too complicated for the person relying on it. I know for a lot of things it is the easiest and most sufficient way to get things done, but I was just in the computer lab trying to use a very complicated program that wasn't taught very well in my class. I went to all the out of class sessions to learn to use it. While I was in the computer lab just a couple minutes ago I spent an HOUR working on my project. I accidentally clicked on a wrong button and it was gone. Everything that I had worked on for an hour was gone. I tried clicking on the undo button or closing the program without clicking save but when I opened it again it was exactly what it was after I clicked the button. Computer's are supposed to sufficient and an easier way of doing things. In my case right now, this is not true. Maybe it isn't the fault of technology, just the class who didn't teach the program well enough. That is up for debate.

In one of my classes we had a discussion about adolescence and puberty and I thought it was quite interesting. We were asked if it were harder to go through if your a male or female. I can understand that a lot of people would say being a female is real hard, but in my opinion growing up as a female is only as hard as you make it. Going through puberty as a male seems like it would be tough. For females it is easier to persue your hobbies whereas with boys, if your hobby is chearleading you're gunna be in bad shape. Females can cheerlead and they can play softball or even football and they wont get picked on. Being a girl on the football team was actually praised at my school, it only happened once, but she recieved some popularity from it. In my school there was also a male on our cheerleading team and he just got tore apart. Rumor's were spread about him all over the school. Boys are constantly being called gay when some of them actually arent. It's hard to be yourself when one little thing can turn everyone to believe something about you which isn't true. For this it is easy to be a girl, we can do whatever we want and not have to worry about everyone thinking you're homosexual.
3/21/06 PAPER PROPOSAL
The media should not portray the American person to be perfect. Not to say American’s are fat, but the average American is definitely not the size the media shows them as. Especially clothes companies or places trying to sell something. When the person actually uses it, they won’t end up looking like the commercial says which in a way can be seen as false advertisement. In fact less than half will end up looking the way they say. The dove campaign is trying something new, the woman in their commercials are average woman who tried the product for 30 days. This I think will have a positive outcome. When people buy a product, it seems like it would better for the company if the person sees the results from the commercial. Since the woman in the dove commercial have already gone through that process, it is easier to trust. I know that when I see a commercial, especially a place like Victoria Secret, I know that I wont look the same as the girls who are trying to sell it so sometimes just wont even bother. The other’s who buy it to look like the ones in the commercial may end up taking it back when finding out they don’t look the same, or if they keep it, just not buy anything from there again. This can make people feel bad about themselves, which is another reason for this to be changed. It leaves teens with a bad view of body image, and what it means to be beautiful. This type of idea is damaging and unhealthy for American’s today. 92% of women want to change at least one aspect of their appearance. These are the people who will be in control. They are the ones who will run the country in and the media is leading them to bad things, which could be damaging to the future. This is an important issue and it needs to be addressed.
In many ways, US society agrees that there's a problem here, but be sure you state it clearly in the paper. I wonder what, specifically, you propose. Do you want to do something like the Dove campaign here on campus? Also, (and I don't know the answer to this) is there any data on the success of the Dove campaign? I've heard anecdotally that many PSU women like it. If you can find some data pointing to its success (or similar campaigns' success), then you can say your proposal is likely to be successful since it's analogous to the Dove ads. TheKemBlog

3/20/06 THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO
What I have to say about the Manifesto is why do they make it so confusing. Documents like this should be able to be read by everyone that it applies to. I guess you just have to trust the people who translate it for you in Social Studies classes. Another bad thing about it, is the length. I know there is a lot of information in the document, but it doesn't need to be as long as it is, if they didn't make the wording so confusing then I bet it could have been shorter. At this point in time, it isn't as important as it was during the time of the Cold War, but it is probably something everyone should read, but a lot of people will just not because it takes time to read because it's long, but also in order to understand it, it needs to be read slowly and carefully and probably over and over again. I'm not saying it should have slang in it and we worded like the average person talks, but there is a way to make it sound serious and real without making it so hard for the world and community to read.

St. Patty's Day is a crazy holiday that can be very dangerous. people start drinking at bars very early in the morning which means there are drunk people walking around the streets during school and rush hour. Sometimes it's not even the fact that a person is drunk, just the hype of the holiday. I actually had just bought some St. Patty's Day gear and was on my way home. The light said walk so I started to walk and then I heard someone gasp, looked to my side and there was a car about a foot away from me slamming on their breaks. Even though it says walk, there are still people turning right, which is something I failed to think about before crossing. It is great to show the spirit for a holiday, but people should make sure to always be careful and aware of their surroundings. A holiday is not an excuse to be oblivious!

The kick boxing classes at the white buildling are AMAZING! I was testing out the classes there to see where I fit and I fell in love with kick boxing. It's not like I have a lot of anger built up, but maybe stress from school. I recommend this class to anyone with stress on their shoulders. It is so nice to go to this class and let everything out and then take a shower. The feeling after being clean and had just worked out is amazing. It's only 35 dollars a semester and it is highly worth it. Going to a gym somewhere else can cost an insane amount of money which is why it is so great to be going to college and getting the use of a very nice gym with great classes. Take advantage while you have the chance!

This blog is about career services. DUS is a nice place, but it doesn't give students the help they need to get on their way. I was confused and didn't even have a clue of what I wanted to do until I went to career services. When I went I had a meeint with my advisor and he basically had to get an idea of what I was thinking. I ended up taking this test called STRONG. This test compaires your answers with answers of people in certain professions. After the results come back, you can look at the careers that are cut out for your type of person and then look them up and find out, what their salary is, the curriculum, the minimum requirements and what exactly they do. This helped me tremendously because even though I haven't figured it out, I found many more careers I had no idea were even out there that interest me. Even though I haven't picked a major, I feel less stressed knowing that there is something out there for me.

Wow, I didn't write in here at all over break. My break was pretty good. It is a little annoying that the kids from home all have break a week after me. I spent most of my time with my parents! The last weekend I was home was the best because most of my friends came home and we all had a blast. The week before however was relaxing yet lame. I played a lot of boggle ( I know I'm a nerd ) and watching movies. I applied at 11 different places to get a job. My top choices are FYE, Bath and Body Works, and a tanning place near my house. I used to work at a pet store and I was mostly dirty while working which is going to be good for me, because now when I get a clean job, I'll appreciate it more. I'm actually a little glad to be back, not for the work, just to be around more people than my parents! I know that I will get more time with my friends over summer and it will be better because they will ALL be home. Hope everyone else had a good break!
3/2/06 CAUSAL PAPER PROPOSAL!
This paper will be about what causes adolescents to choose to go to college and why they choose the colleges they do. Also there will be a little bit about after college and occupation choices, but mostly about the choice to go or not to go to college. The sources I have found talk about tuition costs and if the education you get in college will really help that much in the real world. College teaches a kid a lot even outside of class, but the question is, is it worth the money, and is that the only reason adolescents have for not going to college? Some sources talk about it positively and some talk about it negatively which will help the paper to equally talk about both sides of the decision.
Still a bit vague. Is money the primary consideration? What if everyone had enough money to go where ever they wanted? Would that change the analysis, and if so how? TheKemBlog

2/28/06 POLITICAL SPECTRUM!
I definatly think I'm more of a leftist and more towards socialism. The one thing I think is most important is equality in every way. I think it is also important to support the poor and the working class because why would you need to support a group that doesn't need support? Instead of competition it is important to have cooperation, it leads to peace more than war. For the religion aspect, this country is based on freedom. The majority is christian, but I think the president should be able to be what ever race, gender or religion they please, unless they worship the devil or something. I think it's important to provide full employment. I feel for those who can not support their families. It must be such a hard thing to not be able to give your children what they need to suceed in life.

2/27/06 RWANDA AND THE DARFUR CONFLICT
Honestly, I have always been pretty deprived when it comes to knowing what is going on in the world. Whenever I read or hear about something like this, it's hard for me to understand, which is probably not a good thing. Instead of trying to understand it, I should probably spend more time trying to figure out ways that may help or get mad at people who aren't doing it right, like the rest of America seems to do. Since I don't know much about what you can or can't do in these types of situation's all I'm left to do is wonder why like I said. The issue in Rwanda at the beginning seems pretty similar to the United States with tension between the races of black and white. They both speak the same language and they both share the same religion. Not everyone in the United States had the same relgion but most black and white people seem to be christian. So in both situation the question is, why does there need to be a conflict? We'll never know. Aside from that, there are many conflicts that are going on and trying to figure out why doesn't help. With the Darfur conflict it seems real serious how children are being killed and women being raped. Each day they suffer without food or water and no one can seem to figure out a way to help. There has to be a way trying something and it failing doesn't mean you can't give another try. I don't want to critisize the UN but we're American's we have the name of the most intelligent and powerful nation in the world, I can't believe we can't figure out a way to help these people.
2/22/06 RESPONSE TO "MY AMERICA"
The writer the whole time, just critisizes America, but yet talks about how greatful he is for it. The writer has a great way of showing irony or sarcasm. At the beginning about the boy, I agree that sometimes people don't need to be so silent. There is nothing wrong with saying a polite "Hi" to your neighbors. As he critizes America, he is still greatful for it. Although most people have something to critisize about America, they don't move or want to move out of the country. There is no way to please everyone in the whole country, so there are things everyone has to deal with. In order for the country to be free of religion, people can't be obligated to celebrate a certain holiday of a certain religion. Just because the country is free doesn't mean the majority of its people can't be of a certain religion. Most the things that go on in America are very controversial, but necessary.

There is a Mr. and Ms. Latino Penn State. One thing I just found out is you don't have to be latino. Thats crazy cuz how you can you be Ms. Latino if your not? It makes no sense. One thing I think would work is if they either had one for every race, or if they only had one. However, some people don't want to be the race they are, so wouldn't even try out even if they wanted to be Mr. or Ms. Penn State. I mean, it's good that they have that kind of an opportunity for everyone, but it just simply doesn't make sense. I would love to be Ms. Latino Penn State, and as long as you have a love for the latino at Penn State, you qualify, but I couldn't do it because I can't be Ms. something I'm not. I would also think that people would get upset if an Asian person were Ms. Black Penn State, although others would think it to be hillarious. To me the point seems to be that a person should be proud of who they are, and if they aren't, then what? They're proud of who other people are, or who they wish they could be? It's so much easier just to love who and what you are than to spend all your effort and time conforming to be something else.

As the weather has random bursts of warmth, I notice people go to extremes. When its barily even 55 degrees outside, people decide its warm enough to wear shorts and flip flopes. My theory is, that instead of wearing less and being just as cold, why not dress appropriately, like a lighter jacket and jeans and enjoy how warm you will be instead of freezing even more for trying to get into summer too quickely. I must encourage people not to get their hopes up for the weather to be warm for the summer because in February, it's usually just a warm front which will shortly be followed by a cold front (not that I know much about meteorology). When the cold front comes in then, it will be a major dissapointment. For now, we will continue to get snow and it will still be winter for another month. Spring is coming soon, but not as soon as some may assume.
2/17/06 EVALUATION PROPOSAL
This paper will be about the affectiveness (effectiveness) of the Vagina Monolgues (Underline or italicize play titles. See WikiStyle to learn how!) in violence prevention. The Vagina Monolgues is one of the most affective (effect, affect and their related terms are difficult; look them up.) fund raisers in America. Each year it raises millions of dollars that goes toward the comfort women and violence prevention. The show is free, the money comes from donations or merchandise. I have attended the vagina monologues this year and also watched a documentary about it. 1 of 6 woman will be sexually assaulted in their life time. There is a big need for this type of production. When people first hear the about a production called the vagina monologues, it might seem a little cliche, but after researching what it is actually about more people would probably attend. Attending the Vagina Monologues showed me a good fun time and it did touch me, but watching the documentary really showed me what the vagina monologues are about. It is not just about the vagina, there's so much more meaning behind it. It's about the deapness of woman and the pain some of these woman have had to go through.

Okay. I take it the claim is something like the Vagina Monologues is an effective tool for educating persons about secual assault. Or something like that. If the thesis is clear, then you can clearly demonstrate how the play fits the criteria. You might want to use a bit of prolepsis too at the beginning. Why is it that people oppose the VM? Thinking about that will help you become clear on what you'll be defending. Finally, you need some sources. TheKemBlog
2/15/06 DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
The Decelaration of Independence is a very important aspect to American society. Without it the rights of American's could be taken away no questions asked. While this is meant for good, it can't be promised. It promises everyone will be treated equally and have the same rights. There is not one person in the world that can follow everyone and make sure they are getting that. There are still people in the world that will not be treated the same as everyone else, or not have freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence is more saying that there wont be one person taking away these rights for everyone. There will be people that unfortunatly are treated wrongly, but as a whole the United States says it will protect its citizens. In other words, the Declaration of Independence is a good thing, but is not meant to be taken literally. It is meant to be guidlines on how this country is run and what the citizens deserve and expect.

2/12/06 THIS WEEKEND
This weekend my parents came to Penn State for my brother's 22nd birthday. We went out to dinner then went to champs sports bar to play some pool. While we were there, a man who worked there asked my dad how old I was and he told him I was 18 years old and the man said, ok I'm not worried about it as long as she is with you. Later my parents bought some drinks and let me have a sip of a strawberry dakery. All of a sudden the man that works there ran over and started yelling at my parents for letting me have a sip of alcohol. Because earlier the man said he wasn't worried about me being there as long as I was with my parents, and because usually your parents can let you have a sip of alcohol they thought it would be ok to let me have a sip. This rule apparently doesn't apply in a bar. My parents and I learned an important lesson that day, DON'T ASSUME!!! I thought it would be nice to let a little bit of information out there to whoever wants it, if your underage you can't even have a sip of alcohol when your with your parents!!!
2/6/06 RESPONDED TO E30M3Blog's PROPOSAL!
2/5/06 PAPER PROPOSAL
The word for my definition paper is parties. I feel that when a college student says something about a party, the assumption is that there will be drinking, sex and probably vandilism, the typcial stereotype of a college party. The argument matters because it is directed toward an audience of college students who many will agree but almost everyone in the audience will have an opinion on the issue. I have six sources for this argument already. The first is the definition of party from the Oxford English Dictionary. This definition supports the claim. The second is from a thesaurus, which does not support the claim. The rest of the sources are articles that involve college drinking, parties and sex. Most of them do support the claim. The sources include articles from MUSE, proquest, CQ research and ther International Encyclopedia of Social and Behavioral Sciences. I am hoping from this proposal I will get feed back about the word I chose and also an opinion of what a college party really is. I have five sources to support the claim and only one that does not.
COMMENT ON 'PAPER PROPOSAL' by TheKramer917
I would agree that college parties are expected to involve alcohol and are generally perceived to be the easiest way to sex. As long as you stay away from commenting on whether drinking and sex are good/bad for college students and telling them to do something different, you should be okay.
Claim: College parties involve alcohol and sex...
Reason: ...because students think those things are fun.
Warrant: When a party is fun, there is usually alcohol and sex.
Counter-Argument #1: Although parties usually have drinks, it isn't neccessarily alcohol.
Counter-Argument #2: When guys and girls get together for a good time, they don't always have sex.
1/31/06 RESPONSE TO ARTICLE IN NEW YORK TIMES
I read the article "Iran Says U.N. Referral Could End Dipolomacy," because I was not home during the presidents state of the union address. Iran wanted to further their nuclear activites program. I can understand how this would worry the rest of the world because of the events of September 11th. Iran wants to use this program in a peaceful way and are arguing that they should have the right to do this. While the rest of the world tries very hard to discourage this program Iran threatens to strike back. Being the person that I am, I would definately agree that the program should not be allowed, because personally I see no use for nuclear activity at all (anything nuclear seems to make me nervous). It is hard to trust a country when there have been so many conflicts. As the U.N. discussed this issue they talked about how Iran should be able to have a peaceful nuclear program while keeping other national interests in mind.
1/29/06 DEFINITION OF TERRORISM
There are many different ways that people would define terrorism, but even though they are all different in their wording, they are somewhat similar. I noticed that most all of them said something about intimidation and the government. This doesn't exactly mean they were all the same, but unless there needs to be a very distinct definition for the word it seems to me that the world knows what terrorism is when they hear it. The world may all think different specific definitions but they will all be very similar. The definition of terrorism usually includes important words about the government, the purpose being to change a way of life, trying to cause intimidation and fear, when these key words are shown in each definition it shows how they all seem to have a general correct version of the word.
1/25/06 GEORGE W. BUSH'S ADDRESS TO CONGRESS
The president didn't seem to use a lot of personal emotion. He talked about the tragedy that happened but never really gave any guilt trips or other emotions to back him up. Although I did notice he used one emotion, fear. He didn't use it as, "If you don't contribute you will lose your freedom," but he did use it as "These people are trying to take away your freedom, but we wont let it happen." He has very strong speaking methods because he has a large amount of confidence. He has confidence that America will prevail and that America will find every single terrorist in the whole world and take it down, which we know could never happen. He uses persuasion to bolster the peoples beliefs. He takes what has happened to American's and uses it to show how much we need to go to war and how much we need to attack. After September 11th happened, America knew that there needed to be an action to prevent this from happening again. President Bush takes this belief and extends it to, "We need to find the terrorist camps and people who wont tell us where they are will share thair fate." He takes what the people think needs to be done and persuades them to that more than that needs to take place.
1/23/06 RESPONSE TO THE HUMAN RIGHTS DOCUMENT
This document is a very important part of American history. Even though it is the law, sometimes it is not followed properly. The writers of this document are in authority which makes them seem smart (page 93). The writers use strong grammar in the document. They also have credibility. Even though it doesn't specifically say in the document anything about the writers, they are still very credible. The reason the document was written is credible. It shows a sense of self-testimony in the sense that they know what America is like without this document, they have been through it before. It is complete chaos, which is showcased well in Martin Luther King Jr's letter from Birmingham. These people have fine credentials as they are all members of high rank in the government. Also the document is taken seriously because of the lanuage used. It may be hard for all Americans to read with complete understanding, but because of its highly educated wording and grammar, people can take this document very seriously as a document made by the government for the people.
1/22/06 Response to FDR'S "THE FOUR FREEDOMS"
I think the point of FDR's speech was to help America feel the way he does about being involved with the war. FDR wanted the people of American to know why he was doing what he was and not just do it and leave them not knowing what was going on. He was trying to find the partriotism in every American. It seemed like his efforts to raise taxes for more war materials was selfless. He talked about how it was to help other countries out in the war and non of the money would be used for self profit. It helped raise patriotism when he talked about the American army and how strong the army has gotten. That the leaders of other countries will not take over America. It gave confidenct to the crowd. Although he did talk about how the army was not strong enough. This just gave determination to get better.
1/20/06 SNAPSHOTS
I chose a snapshot about travelers, they say that seven out of ten travelers say that a suitcase on wheels reduces stress when they travel. It would seem to lower stress when the person doesn't need to carry all the weight on their shoulders or back or even just carrying in their hand, the person would be less soar when they actually start their vacation. Although the suitcase on wheels seems like a very conveniant invention, some of them are not made properly. A lot of times they could add stress, such as when they fall over all the time and the person needs to stop walking to put their suitcase back on its two wheels again. If the person is late for their flight this could cause them more stress if the suitcase on wheels makes them miss their flight! That may be why the other three persons sided with the non wheeled suitcases as their primary choice.
1/16/06 RESPONSE TO MARTIN LUTHER KING LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM!
I just read the Marting Luther King Jr. letter that he wrote when he was in jail after the non violent march in Birmingham. I read this letter last semester for one of my classes and last time and this time both showed how King has an incredible ability to argue. When he is proving his points he gives all the reasons for his actions in a way that makes it hard to argue against it. When I read the letter it just showed how this was getting personal, he made it seem like everyone else was valueless and selfish and inconsiderate. The way he uses his words is so powerful especially when he talks about not being able to wait when his people are dying. Comparing the situation to Hitler's acts showed how America was supposed to be a place to find freedom and we were being no different than the other countries that Americans ran away from. King was a great man in how he could write his mind in a way everyone could understand.
1/12/06 PERSONAL NARRATIVE!
Welcome to the SnapKrackelPop blog, the first and one of the most important facts about me is my name, Kelli. I grew up in a town called Horseheads which is right above the border of Pennsylvania into New York. Although it sounds like a very small town, it does have a nearby mall and some places of entertainment. Horseheads is the only place I have ever lived, but I have traveled to many other places. The first and last time I went out of the United States was the summer after my junior year when I went to Costa Rica. That trip was by far the most exciting trip I have ever taken, I encourage anyone and everyone to explore Costa Rica. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do, but since you can't do that all the time I also enjoy playing in the Blue Band. I've been in a marching band since I was in eighth grade. I know it sounds a little dorky which in high school I will agree because it was actually something very different than the Blue Band. However, the blue band I would definatly say should be called a sport. When it is marching band season you can see every muscle in my body (but not to the point where it is absolutly disgusting). There are over three hundred people in the Blue Band and such a wide variety of people at that. It is about the size of my senior class in high school. Blue Band is something I really enjoy doing and a great place to make friends. There is much more about me than there is room for in this blog, but hopefully there will be other opportunities to find out the rest.
