I commented on HolyCow and CameronCrazy on Sunday, November at 5 PM.

I would like people to look at this website: http://www.nida.nih.gov/Infofacts/marijuana.html

My name is Emily and I'm from Livingston, New Jersey. I just got back to my room in East Halls from Spanish class. I have an older sister, Julie, who went to GW. This summer, I did the summer session at Penn State. I loved it and it really helped me meet people and learn the campus with so many less people. I took two classes, Statistics and Speech. My mom is an alumni of Penn State as well, so she was very happy when I decided to come here. I enjoy playing tennis and being with my friends. Also, I've done a great deal of acting in the past. I have performed in television shows, commercials, and movies, mostly when I was younger. My mom and sister do acting as well, and my sister also works as an editor of a magazine. It is called Co-Ed and is a new magazine all about colleges and college life. She travels to different schools, interviews famous alumni, and takes photographs. She has a very interesting job and enjoys it a lot. I am in the school of communications and will probably be a broadcast jorunalism major. Now, I am going to eat dinner.

Today was the first football game of the season against University of South Florida. The game was so much fun! I have never seen so many people wearing blue and white and screaming at the top of their lungs. The team played well and won! Hopefully we will have a good season this year. It was a beautiful day for the game-sunny and not too hot. I'm not a huge football fan, but in high school I was the manager of the football team. I took stats for both defensive and offensive players. Although I'm not an expert at the game still, I followed the game pretty well and understood most of the plays. I'm sure that by the end of the season I will know it even better. I can't wait for the rest of the games!

Today it is beautiful outside!! I woke up late today and went to brunch at the commons. Then, I went with my friends to the pool. It is so nice at the pool and the weather is amazing. I love the hot weather! It's supposed to be nice all week, but after that I'm sure the cold weather will be here :(. I'm dreading the winter and snow! In New Jersey, the weather is not quite as bad as in State College. I guess I will have to learn to the take the bus! Until then, I will just walk everywhere and sit outside a lot. I am going to work on some homework now...

So, last night my roomate and I came back into the dorm very late. We were hungry and decided to make bagel bites. Let's just say that I am not quite the chef. I read the directions that said to put them in for four minutes, but I only put two of the small bagel bites into the microwave oven. All of a sudden my roomate starts screaming because the room began to fill with smoke! I quickly ran to unplug the microwave and we opened the doors to the room. We looked like such idiots as we were running down the hall freaking out! We thought that we were literally going to burn down Brumbaugh Hall at 4 in the morning. Finally, the smoke died down and we removed the crisp bagel bites from the microwave. Looking back on it, it was actually really funny but so scary at the time. All I can say now is that I went to bed hungry that night...

Today, around 5 o'clock, I went for a run around the campus with my friend. Now, I'm not much of an athlete, but we decided to run around the entire campus. As we ran by many buildings that we had never seen before, we reflected on the beauty of the campus. I think that is probably the prettiest time of the year at Penn State. Everyone was outside at once! I walked by the field in front of Old Main, and I swear it was out of a movie. There was one group of people playing football, another group playing frisbee, and then two people playing guitar and singing in front of Old Main! It just seemed like a picture perfect moment at Penn State. This one scene defined college life and its beauty!

I just got back from my classes of the day on this beautiful day and decided to read other people's narratives. I found TheFishBowlNarrative to be very funny and amusing. It also perfectly depicts life in suburban New Jersey, at least according to my own life as well. The parking lot at my school consists of more Mercedes than at a country club. On the weekends, boredom always arises. My friends that are guys always steal cones from construction sites as well! One technique that he used that I am going to try and incorporate into mine is the use of quotations and conversations. I think it is an effective way to get your point across. I also enjoyed LoveYellowNarrative. I think it revealed her feelings and emotions very well. I also liked the use of questions in the beginning, which I may try and incorporate into my narrative as well. overall, good job everyone!

So, I guess you could say I am close with my parents. I mean, does talking to them four times a day on the phone mean we're close? Anyway...if I'm bored on my way to class it's always nice to have a good phone chat with Mom. She asks about classes, I ask about her day, and we have a friendly chat before I walk into the building. However, when they call me, it is so irritating! Wednesdays are basically my busiest and most tiring day of classes. I start the earliest as well as end the latest. Right when I got back to my room tonight form dinner, my phone rings and I glance at my phone only to see the caller ID read "Home." I don't want to be rude so of course I picked up the phone. There's my mom, rambling on and on about her day. Don't get me wrong...I love my mom and she's so funny, but at this point i was just exhausted and had nothing to say. of course, she takes it that my silence means I am upset and then the 20 questions begin. "Why are you so quiet? Are you ok? Are you sick? Are you unhappy?" are among the millions of questions. Finally, I just tell her that i have homework to do and have to go. Right now, I'm just merely waiting for the good-night phone call from home...

There is nothing like a good Penn State football to top off the weekend!!!! Today we had our second game against Cincinatti and of course we beat them! Before coming to Penn State, everyone describes the games in so many ways: amazing, fun, exciting, exhilirating. However, these words alone cannot truly describe and depict a Penn State football game. Never in my life have I seen so many people wearing blue and white and wanting one thing: victory. How can one not smile when 100,000 people are all singing the fight song? The games show such a sense of unity, excitement, and thrill. We woke up very early in the morning to start prepping for the game on maybe 4 hours of sleep. Exhausted as we were, we still cheered and screamed as loud as we could for our team. My friend, who might be the craziest person I have ever met, made people lift him up so he could "crowd surf" during the game. Where else would you be able to this but in Beaver Stadium???

I just glanced over at a calendar and recognized today's date: 9/11. Everytime I look a clock and the time is 9:11 a chill goes down my spine as well. It is so hard to believe that today is the five year anniversary of the attack on the twin towers. This truly is a date that will live in infamy. Similar to the JFK assasination, I think in 20 years people will be asking us where we were and heard of the news on 9/11. I live only a half hour from New York City, so it seems to me that almost everyone I know has some kind of story to tell or someone they know that was affected personally by the attacks. For me, I remember being in freshman history in Livingston High School. Someone came into my room and told my teacher what they just heard, and she ran into the halls crying. After a few moments, she came back into the room and we all gathered around a radio in the back of the room to listen to the news. I was basically freaking out. My sister just began her freshman year at GW in Washington D.C., and my dad works in the city (not near the world trade center though). I remember waiting in a huge line to use the payphones to call my mother, since people did not get cell phones when they were 5 years old then. After getting in touch with my mother and finding out everything was ok, I felt a sigh of relief. My dad was fine, but he actually did witness the second plane hit the tower from his 33rd floor window in midtown, New York. It is so scary to think that an event happened so close to home. The airport that the planes left from is where I always fly out of, and is a mere 20 minutes away from my home. Now, after five years, I still remember the day perfectly clearly and I am sure I will remember it for the rest of my life.

When people first meet me, I think that shy is the last word that comes to mind. I am fairly friendly and can usually approach people that I do not know with ease. However, if I become nervous or uncomfortable then I may not act as myself and may tend to be quieter than normal.

My family is a very typical family in my opinion. My dad is basically straight-edge, being an accountant in New York City. My mom tends to be more creative. She is a part-time tutor and part time actress. Ever since I was younger, my sister, mom, and I all have participated in acting jobs in New York City. We have all auditioned for and gotten roles in television shows, commercials, movies, and ads. I do not plan to pursue acting though exactly. Here at Penn State, I want to go into television broadcasting which also incorporates the acting and on-camera work. My sister is also creative. She is a writer at a magazine and travels all around the country to different colleges. This is her first job out of college and it is working out very well for her. She is my only sibling, and we are four years apart. We have recently become closer and can talk about more personal issues with each other.

I think that my family has created and molded my future very well. I also am very independent. In high school, my parents neve had to tell me to do my work. I always did everything on my own, and I usually prefer to do things on my own without the help of others when I can. However, sometimes the help of others can only be constructive. I talk to my family very often, and feel close and comfortable with them. I know that they will support me in all my future endeavors.

For my final project, I have begun to think of some ideas. I may want to discuss and study the death penalty. The death penalty is only legal in certain states today, and is a very controversial topic. It is very prevalent today, especially with the edition of Scott Peterson to death row. There are many aspects and issues involved with the death penalty, and I think that a great deal of information would be available to research. Another topic that is very controversial and present today is the legalization of marijuana for medicinal needs. I am going to begin research on both topics and see what sparks my interests more.

Debate vs. Dialogue:

In my opinion, debates and dialogues differ in many ways. First of all, a dialogue is merely a discussion or conversation between one or more parties. Dialogues may contain arguments, but are not limited to this. They may be a mere discussion on the weather or a family member. However, debates always contain arguments between parties. During a debate, each party typically takes a different side and opinion on the same issue. Debates are discussing more controversial issues, while dialogues are the overall general conversations. Therefore, debates are types of dialogues and are more specific for argumentative reasons.

"And it's so hard to do, and so easy to easy, but sometimes, sometimes, you just have to walk away.."

"Sometimes in our lives, we all have pain, we have all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow..."

14:

Today we started RUSH for sororities. This was the craziest and longest day ever. First, I woke up at 9 am and met my group in South Halls at 12:15. We received name tags and journals for the fun-filled day ahead of us! We all put on our biggest smiles and began to walk around the dorms. I have never seen so many girls wearing jeans and a solid colored shirt ! (our dress code) Then, from 1 pm-9pm, we met the different sororities in the suites of their dorms. For 20 minutes each, each person talked to the girls in the sororities about the most generic things. "Where are you from?", "where do you live?" and "what is your major?" are among the common questions asked by the many girls in the sororties. Sure, there are sororities that you just know you would never fit into. Others may seem iffy, while certain sororities stick out in my head. Now that the first day is over, all I can do is sit back, relax, and get ready for an action-packed week of recruitment fun...

15:

Today was the second day of RUSH. I would have to say that this day was much beter than the first. We only met with 5 sororities today, so it was much less stressful and time consuming. I also liked the sororities that I met much more of this day. I even found one sorority today that I think I would truly fit into and enjoyed spending time in. But, I do have the next week to decide. I was speaking to my friend today, a boy, who is rushing a fraternity. Their rush, however, is so different than girls. Girls rush is extremely formal, run through the school, and has many rules. Basically all boys have to do is show up to parties at fraternity houses for a few weeks and they basically get in. Their pledging is much worse than ours though. Since sororities live on campus and are run through the school, there are much stricter hazing policies. For girls, it's more of annoying things like bringing a sister breakfast in bed, while some boys have it very rough. I've heard horror and disgusting stories of boys' pledging that are not worth repeating right now. All I can say is, I hope that none of my friends have it too bad...

As I sit at the computer, I can't help but to log onto facebook.com. For anyone who doesn't know, facebook is a website for college students that connects them to other college students all over the country. You put a picture of yourself on it, make a profile, and then "friend" people at other schools or send them messages. Although it sounds dumb, it is actually quite addicting. I can't deny the fact that I get excited when the message: "You have one new friend request" shows up on my monitor. Facebook is such a strong addiction of college students today. When I am out, I almost always hear someone go "That would be a great facebook picture!" and even those who actually pose for their facebook pictures. Everyone denies that they love it, but I know that almost all of these people secretly go back to their dorms, get onto their laptops, and check out facebook.

17:

The day has finally come that we have all been waiting for! No, I am not talking about college acceptance letters coming in. No, I am not talking about graduation. No, I am not talking about prom. This day is much more important to many people...bid day! All jokes aside, this day was one of the craziest that I have ever seen. After a very long week of RUSH, the bids were finally in. Now, this process was so dragged out. All of the girls had to meet in a large room and receive their envelopes with their bids inside. However, we had to wait almost an hour to open the envelopes! It was intense and crazy. Finally, we were all able to rip open the envelopes. A huge smile came to my face as I saw "Delta Delta Delta" on the card. This was my number one choice sorority, and I was beyond excited! I ran to hug everyone around me. Never in my life have I seen so many girls in one room either crying or smiling. We then all ran down and met our future sorority sisters. We soon traveled to the sorority suite and received t-shirts and bags filled with candy. It was so great! We took pictures with the new pledge class and began to bond with eachother. I feel lucky to be a sister in such a great place for the next four years...

How do you study for an exam?

First, I would recommend finding a nice and quiet place to study in. You must allot yourself enough time in advance to study in order for the information to be retained. Next, read through all of the chapters in your book that the exam is on. Although this may be tedious, it will be worthwhile. Next, take out paper or your computer and create a study guide for the exam. Make sure to include key words and concepts that are either emphasized well in the book or that your teacher pointed out on numerous occasions. Now, after the study guide is complete, the studying is not over! Now, sit in a quiet and well-lit room and review the study guide at least 6 times. If it is a math or science class, do practice problems. If it is history or English, you may want to try writing a paragraph or two on some concept that you have learned. The more practice, the better! It also helps to study with others. Have a friend quiz you on the information. This was help you remember it by reciting the information out loud. After reviewing the study guide many times, it is time for bed. Get a good night sleep the night before an exam. When you wake up the next morning, make sure to eat a well-balanced breakfast. Now, leave for the exam early and review the study guide once before the exam. Good luck, you are sure to have success.

19: The enthymeme that I found was in a magazine advertisement in Cosmopolitan Magazine. This is an advertisement for a diamond ring. It states "Platinum. For a lifetime of love." There hidden assumption is that the platinum and diamond weddings rings will ensure a lifetime of love. There are a few reeaons that this assumption may not work. One reason is that money cannot buy happiness or love. The ring alone will not ensure love, the two people must ensure the love with each other. Another reason this may not work is because there are many poor people that have truer love than some rich people. Women without any diamond rings may have lifetimes of love while women with the biggest and most expensive rings may be unhappy and not in love. Therefore, this is a prime example of an enthymeme.

This weekend I attended my first wedding in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The wedding took place at the beautiful William Penn Hotel. My mother grew up with the mother of the bride in a small town about an hour outside of Pittsburgh. The bride, Liz, is only 25 years old and looked beautiful. It is so weird to think that someone so close in age to myself is already getting married! It was a jewish wedding, semi on the religious side. She is not religious, but her husband grew up in a religious/orthodox home. Therefore, the ceremony and part of the party were more affiliated with this. The ceremony was beautiful, and many people sang beautifully in hebrew. At the party, there was seperate dancing between the males and females. They played mostly hebrew and Israeli music as well at the wedding. Even though it wasn't my taste in music, it was really pretty and a lot of fun. It was good to spend a weekend away from school in a hotel. It was also really nice to be able to be with family and close friends who I haven't seen in aw hile. It was a great time...

21:

My birthday was this week!! It was on October 3, and I turned 19 years old. It was my first birthday being away from home so that was a little weird. However, my parents and friends from home sent me up packages of presents for the birthday! The celebrations actually began on Sunday night as the clock struck midnight! My friends and I ordred pizzas and I got many birthday phone calls. On the day, many of my friends at school also gave me cards and presents. My roomate bought my balloons as well to make the room seem more festive. That night, a few of us went out to dinner at The Deli in town. Afterwards, I had a meeting at my sorority. Another girl in my sorority has the same birthday as well, so everyone bought us a cookie cake! It was so good and so much fun to be able to celebrate with all my new friends here at school. Although we didn't get to go out since it was a Monday night, we still had a lot of fun!

22:

This game was crazy this weekend!! I cannot believe that Penn State beat Ohio State! It was such an insane night game on Saturday night. We began tailgating very early, and this was the only game that I actually stayed until the end of. It was also surprising because we kept the lead the ENTIRE time against a team ranked much higher than we were. When the game was finally over adn the scoreboard was in favor of Penn State, so many people charged the field. My friend even got sprayed my mase in his face by the police! It was so wild and crazy. Afterwards, we went out to the celebrate the win. There were cops EVERYWHERE in town! Soem were on horseback, some on bikes, and many just patrolling the streets. Now, Penn State is ranked #8!!!

23:

Here is a link to an article I found from the Washington Post for the first causal argument: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/03/AR2005090300165.html.

This article was written after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Kanye West, an African American singer, made a claim, stating: "George Bush doesn't care about black people!" Before this claim was made, he declared many reasons to why it is true. Kanye West said that the reason that the people in New Orleans are still waiting for help is because they are black. He believes that black people are shown differently in the media than white people. Since New Orleans is primarily made up of blacks, then the reason that the country (namely its leader, Bush) is not helping out very quickly or efficiently is because of their skin color. Kanye West is making this argument because he believes that the people in New Orleans need our help. The main audience that he is targeting is the citizens of the United States and the Unites States government. This comment made my him would probably work more effectively for the black citizens, since he is black and relating directly towards them. This may not work for the stark republicans who are in favor of George W. Bush and his actions.

There may also be other causes for why the people in New Orleans are not receiving help efficiently. First of all, the American Red Cross and other programs are also helping out in the war overseas. They must first gather money and supplies, and donations, in order to effectively help those in need. This may take some time to happen. In addition, George W. Bush is also dealing with terrorist threats, the war, and the economy. He may care about black people, but there are also other issues involving the United States that need his attention also. Therefore, the issue of race probably has nothing to do with the lack of help for the hurricane victims. There are many other causes of the lack of help as well.

24:

An article I found online: http://galenet.galegroup.com/servlet/OVRC?vrsn=227&slb=SU&locID=livi33708&srchtp=basic&c=5&ste=17&tbst=ts_basic&tab=1&txb=%2522Homelessness%2522&docNum=X3010235207&fail=0&bConts=3935. This article was from America, a Catholic Magazine. The article, in short, states that: the principal reasons for homeless remain jobs that do not pay a living wage, inadequate financial assistance for those who cannot work, insufficient medical care for the mentally ill and addicted, and the lack of affordable housing. The audience that this is probably targeting are those of high status that have the power to make changes. The author is trying to make them aware of the reasons for homelessness as well as ways of trying to help the homeless people, especially in cities. This may work for politicians who are trying to gain power, and this may be a tactic in helping them. It may also work for people of middle-class status who have money and a voice, but are not too power-striken or self-involved.

However, there may also be other causes for homelessness. People may have dropped out of school and are therefore not able to gain high paying jobs without a degree. They may also be homeless because of family problems that forced them out onto the streets. Many of these factors combined, as well as those stated above, can contribute to homelessness. It is not merely one factor, but many combined that truly cause the problem. People may also be searching for jobs in areas that they do not excel in. They may not then receive the job, and be forced to work at minimum wage jobs. In addition, some people end up homeless because they have children at very young ages and have no means of supporting them. Therefore, there are many reasons for homelessness, not merely the reasons stated in the article.

25:

From RedLionBlog : For the causal argument, I chose an article from espn.com on Penn State’s football team and the impact of the freshmen, mainly Derrick Williams and Justin King. The article states that these two players deserve a majority of the credit for the resurgence of the football program at Penn State. The reasons that the author gives are that these two have come in as true freshmen and are already making a big impact as playmakers on both sides of the ball. This is true, and the main reason the argument is even being made is because at the time the article was written Penn State had just knocked off Minnesota by thirty points. I have some disagreement with the article, because I feel there are many other causes for Penn State’s great start. First and foremost is Joe Paterno, who has completely changed his philosophy regarding playing freshmen, and who has also opened up the offense in order to get those freshmen the ball. Also, Michael Robinson is the leader of the team, and he is the one who is in the driver’s seat as quarterback and captain of the team. Lastly, the defense has been strong and played an integral part of the winning formula. So while I concede that the freshmen have been great and have contributed to Penn State’s success, it’s also true that there are many other factors to the great season so far other than the freshmen.

Claim: The freshman Football players at Penn State (namely Derrick Williams and Justin King) are the reason for Penn State's football team's comeback.

Reasons: These two individuals have been making large impacts on offense and defense. The team has a winning record since they began playing this season.

Counter-arguements: Joe Paterno has chosen to let the freshman players play more offensively. The main leader and quarterback of the team (Michael Robinson) is not a freshman and is now captain. The entire defensive end has been playing very well and contributes to the wins. Many other factors aside from the freshman have changed Penn State's football team.

From BrandonBlog :

"I failed that physics test because I didn't study enough on it."

This sentence, said by one too many of my friends, states that they failed one of their tests because they didn't study for it. The cause that they gave for failing is because they didn't study more, meaning they would have done better if they would have studied more for it. The audience for this sentence is anybody who they happen to be talking to, probably other students or their friends.

Claim: The reason that the person failed the physics test was because he/she did not study enough for it.

Reasons: He/she did not put enough effort into studying. THis caused them to fail since he/she did not know the information well.

Counter-arguments: There may have been other reasons for failing. The person may have not attended class and therefore missed information. The person may have also not understood the information fully, and even if he/she studied it, it could still be unclear to him/her. Another reason the person may have failed is because the test was extremely difficult and the class average was low in general. Thus, many other reasons could cause failure.

27: Stigmergy

After reading through the website with definitions, the concept of stigmergy still seems unclear to me. The first definition describes it as “the indirect communication taking place among individuals in social insect societies.” Now, what does indirect communication mean? I think it can be further defined as communication without words. This type of communication was originally observed in insects it’s the 1950s. However, I think that this type of communication is also largely seen among humans. Indirect communication may also be more meaningful than direct communication in many ways. For example, gestures and feelings can sometimes speak louder that words. A warm hug might represent how sometime truly feels rather than their sympathetic words. I think that is the true meaning of indirect communication.

The second part should also be further defined. This type of communication takes place in individuals in social insect societies. The “social insect societies” are communities of insects living together where the insects have a different form of communication. This can also relate to humans because people all over the world communicate in different ways. However, we are all people and learn to understand each other in some ways. Now, I think that the definition of stigmergy is more clearly defined.

28: First Evaluative Argument:

Today I read an article in Co-Ed Magazine, a magazine about colleges and college life. The article, entiteld "The case againts monogamy" tries to define what cheating truly is in a relationship. It first discusses what different people consider to be cheating. Then, it claims that actions are only considered cheating when the people are married. The author claims this is true because married people have "taken a vow to forsake all others, that they will be sexually chaste with the rest of the world until divorce do them part." I think that this is a good claim made by the author. Yes, people will cheat on others throughout their lives. They may cheat them out of money or be romantic with others, but it only seems to be significant if the people are married. There are no counter arguments made in this article. However, counter arguments can be formed about this topic. There are many people that have caring and loving relationships who choose not to get married. These couples may feel more love than married couples, and if one person cheat it would drastically affect them. Therefore, many meaningful relationships exist without marriage and being with another person would also break this commitment. Although a commitment is not marked by law, it may still be very strong. Therefore, cheating on people can also be valid when they are not married.

29: Second Evaluative Argument:

Today I read a different article in Cosmpolitan Magazine. The article claimed that the way to win a man's heart is through personality. This is a good claim because it takes the superficiality out of relationships. Relationships should be about personalities and not looks, even if this is not entirely realistic. The reasons that the author gives for this claim is that looks are appealing at first, but in order for a relationship to sustain itself and for love to form personalities must evolve. There are no counter-arguments mentioned in the article. A counter-argument that I can think of is that many men may not care about a woman's personality, as sad as this may seem. Many man are merely interested in the way that a woman looks, and will even base marriages on this. Some other reasons people choose to be in relationships are for money and social status. Although these reasons are not the "correct" reasons to be in relationships, they often do occur because of these reasons. However, I agree with the author in that a woman needs a good peronality in order to find a compatible mate and then fall mutually in love. Both people must have personalities that agree with each other as well.

K: and by the end we said,., i think should do either the technology or the girls self image

R: i think either would be good.. or the CEO thing.. or abortion

K: same here

E: yeah

E: we have to make sure we can substantiate things enough becaue its a very lojng paper

R: yea

R: i dont know if the technology thing would be that easy

E: it may be too broad

R: yea

E: it may be more opinionated

R: yea thats true too

E: so we should probabvly start researching these topics to see what would be the best

R: well, i know someone wrote about abortion for one of their other papers.. we could do it but like, its sort of been done

K: i was thinking that too

K: and everyone always does abortion as a topic

K: we need to do something were somewhat interested in/know about too

E: right

R: yea

R: either of those are pretty interesting to me.. so whatever u guys think

E: well do u think we should research online a little and then see what has the most?

R: yea thats probably a good idea

K: yeah

E: alright so we can start doing that

K: and if we think of any more interesting topics, that would be fine too

R: yea

E: definitely

Plaigarism is when one steals another's ideas withour proper citations. If an idea is unique to a certain individual, book, or website, then one must cite the source in papers. If an idea is merely copied from somewhere or someone, then this is plaigarism. Plaigarism can range from copying two words of text, to entire papers. There are some companies that claim they will write a paper for you, which is another strong example of plaigarism. There is even now a website (turnitin.com) that people can submit papers and the website will detect plaigarism. The only way to avoid it entirely is by citing every idea that is not yours, even if you reword the ideas. It is a crime taken very seriously in schools especially.
