April 7, 2006 Final Project Proposal
Global warming; it is a phrase most of us have heard, yet many of us don’t know the meaning of. Unfortunately, global warming is a problem that is not going away. Global warming is what we refer to the earth’s rising temperatures as (What). The earth’s temperature, whether we choose to believe or not, is rising. Most of the problem has been caused by human action, which means that if we were to take a look at what we are doing to cause global warming, then we can start to take preventative actions. As those who are the direct receivers of the consequences of global warming, we need to increase our awareness about it. Some of those long-term consequences include heat waves and periods of unusually warm weather, ocean warming, sea-lever rise and coastal flooding, glaciers melting, and Artic and Antarctic warming (Fingerprints). Other more frequent impacts of global warming include spreading disease, earlier spring arrival, plant and animal range shifts and population changes, coral reef bleaching, downpours, heavy snowfalls, and flooding, droughts and fires (Harbingers). Knowing that these are some of the consequences of our actions, we should know what the actions are that cause those consequences. Some of the causes of global warming are large emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities including industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion, and changes in land use, such as deforestation (Global). Being able to target the activities that cause global warming, we should be able to target those who are responsible for these actions and impose restrictions and limitations on their actions. If we were able to impose certain restrictions and limitations on the practices that are causing global warming, and replace them with practices that are less harmful to the environment then we may have a solution to a very serious problem that is plaguing the world we live in.

After class today, I thought of a possible reason to convince industrial business to cut back on their emissions. Since most people seem to agree that global warming is an issue and that man has something to do with it, a company that cuts back on its emissions could use this to establish an ethos. When they advertise to the public market or to other industries, they could make it known that they are working to cut back on their emissions. If you can convince consumers in your paper that emissions from industrial processes are a major contributor to global warming, a consumer may be more likely to purchase from a company that declares itself as a low-emission, global warming conscientious company. So, even if it might be more cost efficient to not worry about emissions or pollution, by cutting back on emissions and making it known to the consumers, a company could bring in a larger market and make profit off of it. They could potentially follow their morals and make some extra money. I don't know, just an idea. -- MemoirofaFirecracker
April 3, 2006 Response to “A Modest Proposal”
Since this isn’t the first time I have read Jonathon Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” I knew what to expect. Swift uses satire to the full extent in this piece suggesting that the people of Ireland start eating infants to solve multiple problems at once. The satire is very intense and it is understandable why some people would have found it absurd and insensitive, and perhaps still do. But, I think that sometimes humor in an extreme form is the only way to get a point across. The piece definitely catches one’s attention and makes him think, which I assume was its primary purpose. Obviously, Swift did something right or the piece would still not be so widely known, studied, read, and talked about today. Swift left a lasting impression with more works of literature than just this one, which in my opinion makes his writing reliable sources.
