I would just like to state that when I scheduled "ELEMENTARY Differential Equations", I in no way could predict how terrible, how completely horrible that class is. If thats elementary, I'd hate to see what intermediate is.

Has anyone been as glued to ESPN 1 and 2 this weekend for the NFL Draft like I have? Most likely not I'll assume. I'm a loser.

Anyway, I cannot remember a recent draft that was so unpredictable. Who could predict that Buffalo would not only reach for Donte Whitner in the top ten, but take John McCargo, a second/third round talent, in the late first round.

I can't really sit on a high horse here as a Steeler fan. Their first round grab of Santonio Holmes was great, as well as their late third round pickup of Willie Reid; however, the first third round choice of Anthony Smith was baffling. I was really hoping for Pat Watkins or Ko Simpson. The only thing is, though, that every year I come away scratching my head at the choices Bill Cowher makes, but once the season rolls around I applaud his drafting ability.

We shall see

Thanks for the reply. I suspect that others would give a similar response, since everyone's encourages to write about whatever he or she wants. So much for my attempt to investigate the psyche of English 15 students! TheKemBlog

In speaking of pictures (from my last post), I came across this a while ago. I meant to post it before but I forgot:

it looks like a picture taken with any regular camera, but the artist made that over several months in Photoshop. Whats even crazier is its 10 feet long. I guess one could question why someone would spend that long making an image like that when you could just take a camera and do it, but I think creating something from nothing is better than seeing something already there and pressing a button to capture it.

if you go to www.poy.org , they have the top rated(?) pictures of the year from different publications

saw that was one of the pictures of the year... kinda sad though. The following was written underneath:

When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport, Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac. During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport, Major Steve Beck described the scene as one of the most powerful in the process: "See the people in the windows? They'll sit right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home," he said. "They're going to remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should."

i came upon this, thought this was kind of cool

Oh here we go - another movie review. It's just that I don't watch the news, read cnn, or care about politics enough to effectively comment on whats going on with our country. Anyway, yesterday I had the wondeful pleasure of watching Pulp Fiction for the first time. I remember watching a bit of it a few years ago and being bored after 5 minutes of it, but this time around was certainly better. There was not a moment where I wasn't entertained - either by action sequences, COMPLETELY weird scenes (Marsellus and Butch vs. Zed, Maynard, and the Gimp), or just witty, comedic dialog. I cannot even say that for some of my favorite movies of all time (Goodfellas and Lord of the Rings trilogy). Also, while not main characters, the story that included Tarantino and Harvey Keitel was just so... well done. Sure, maybe Pulp Fiction wasn't deep and meaningful (think Shawshank Redemption), but it succeeded at every movie's ultimate purpose: entertainment. I was certainly entertained.

ALSO - I agree with VaryAwesome in that I should give Chronicles of Narnia a second chance. There have been times (in the case of Pulp Fiction, and moreso Reservoir Dogs) that my initial reaction is negative, so I will see it again.

I remember in 4th-5th grade reading the entire Chronicles of Narnia and being being quite engrossed in the novels. However, when watching the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for the first time this past weekend, I could only feel indifference. I did not remember much from the novels, but I figured if I enjoyed the books I would enjoy the movie. This was not the case. To begin with, it takes nearly an hour for any type of action to occur. When it did occur, it was basically one single action sequence then BAM it's over. Also, having a budget of about 180 million, I thought the graphics would be mind blowing. Aside from Azlan, I really saw no special effect of any significance (unless you count otters beavers as significant). Where did that money go? Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, a far better film (including visually), had a budget of about 94 million, and nearly every aspect of that film was created digitally TO PERFECTION. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, The Chronicles of Narnia was a supreme waste of money.

Hm, that's weird. If the visual effects were not so good, why did the film get nominated for an Oscar in Visual Effects? Seems strange the Academy would pick this film if it was par or sub-par. Besides that, I guess you didn't notice 50-75% of the movie was computer-animated. I'm sure, since you had the DVD, you'd be able to watch some special features about the weeks and weeks that went into designing the visual aspects of the movie. And lastly, if you wanted to watch this for some fantastic action sequences, I guess you are one who is unfamilar with the "fantasy" genre. To clear it up, fantasy is like sci-fi with way toned-down action sequences that are only there for entertainment most of the time, eg. they are not essential to the storyline. Ok, good day fellow citizen, maybe watch the movie again and write an "On Second Thought..." blog. -VaryAwesome

As I hinted at in my evaluation, I was eager to see how Romper Stomper compared to American History X, as i heard it was better. I came away quiet disappointed and would not recommend it to anyone. For those who aren't familiar with Romper Stomper, it is the 1992 movie about Australian skinheads (led by Russel Crowe's character Hando). I won't go into specifics, but I thought even with an actor as good as Crowe, the movie came off quite bland.

About 3 minutes ago I pulled a fast one and decided to completely change my topic. Now, I will write about the Arthurian Legend. Stay Tuned

We've all heard the 19th century description of a fraternity. It is usually along the lines of "...community of men joined in philanthropy and academics..." Is this really what a fraternity is? Is it something far less - such as something barbaric and detrimental to universities? Or could it be that a "fraternity" is actually something more - something that is disregarded by most other people. Is community involvement a key part to the definition of a fraternity, or is the word "social" a more fitting term? Negative publicity surrounds most every fraternity system in the country. Does this negative publicity accurately define a fraternity? Also, what will be a “fraternity” in the future. Naturally, things evolve with time; so what will time change “fraternity” into? All these questions will be asked and, hopefully, answered through the course of this paper. I will attempt to both define what may be the future fraternity and to redefine the current definition of “fraternity” (if necessary).

Clark, Thomas Arkle. The fraternity and the college : being a series of papers dealing with fraternity problems.

Adams, Charles Francis. A college fetich : an address delivered before the Harvard chapter of the fraternity of the Phi beta kappa, in Sanders theatre, Cambridge, June 28, 1883.

Baumann, Fred E. Fraternity and politics : choosing one's brothers.

Proposal Reviewed by Ralph:

I think this is a very intersting topic to evaluate. I find it particularly interesting because I am currently pledging for a fraternity and I think that the "definition" of a frat is far different from what a frat actually is and what it stands for. The reason students pledge for frats is also far different than the reasons frats were originally founded upon. I am interested to see what your paper defines a fraternity as.

Blogging!

The concept of students writing in a teacher-mediated blog is very smart, considering the popularity of blogging these days. That being said, mandatory "4 entries a week" is not. The idea is that students should write about whatever they wish, preferrably being "inspired" in nature. 4-a-week requirements, however, leave no room for inspiration. Would any of mozart's music be as revered as they are today if he was told to pop out 4 "inspired" pieces a month? Would Steven Spielberg like to be told to create 4 academy award-winning movies in 2 years? Now obviously, my blog, nor any blog i have ever written in (4 others), have never been nor will ever be anything extraordinary. The point is, though, I have no inspiration at the moment, yet the syllabus demands entries!

In the end, is it possible for ANY blog to be inspired? Xanga Blogs (www.xanga.com) have no interesting qualities as a whole. Myspace (www.myspace.com) is a giant popularity contest. The entire point of any interesting blog entries there is to gain more "friends". Independent blogs are also popularity contests. It seems the only reason people write is to gain acclaim through www.shoutwire.com. The most famous of the bloggers, maddox (maddox.xmission.com), has always put a damper on his original, hilarious, entries by bragging about how many hits his website gets (good job maddox, you got more hits than pepsi.com!!!). In summary, is it possible to call a blog inspired if its only reason for existence is notoriety?

Well I should end this post now - Drumline is on! Nick Cannon is HILAAARIOUS!

QUIZ: Who is a "minister" who claims to be a supporter of equal rights under god yet in reality is a staunch racist who cares only for promoting his own name and his own race at the expense of different races who wholeheartedly believe in equality? Who is the "Reverend" who sleeps around?

DING DING DING!

Jesse Jackson!!!!

The dude makes me sick to my stomach. Martin Luther King Jr.? Good man. Jesse Jackson? A user of Dr. Kings name and a tainter of Dr. King's work. No one could pay me to see him speak. He's as bad as any white racist, only no one calls him out on it. Shame on anyone who listens to his B.S.

To tell the truth, a thought I always have in regards to the peaceful protests led by Dr. King is, "while for a good cause, how can they be truly peaceful if they caused so much violence?" After reading this article, many of my questions, including the one i previously mentioned, were answered. I never gave thought to the fact that these protests were peaceful and the evil acts in response in no way made the cause of these peaceful protests any less just; if anything, these evil acts made them all the more just. Another thing brought to my eyes when reading this article is the prototypical dedication these civil rights activists had. It is human nature for people to have what I call the "why should I suffer when I, one person, won't really effect the outcome of these demonstrations" syndrome. For many people to be so united in their cause that very few people waver and dispose their commitments to the group is rarely seen. This, I think, is due to gifted leaders such as Martin Luther King.

To begin, I’m a computer engineer major. This means I have never really concentrated on writing well. I played football in high school for Gateway (the team Justin King played at) where I started at center. It was a good experience but I’m happier now that I don’t do something so time-dominating. I like any music but rap/hip hop. All my friends from home are hippies, but I wouldn’t classify myself as one. And finally, I love seafood, strawberry smirnoff, and peanut butter cookies.
