Narrative

I come from a high school that graduates about 110 students per year. I am used to walking around school with everyone knowing me and vice versa. Here at Penn State, things are a little different.

My favorite hobby is playing the drums. I have been playing the drums and taking private lessons since fourth grade. I was involved in every instrumental group my high school had to offer, including concert band, jazz band, pep band, marching band, and a number of honors bands outside of school. I gained leadership experience by being a section leader for two years in our marching band and also by being our school’s Tri-M Music Honors Society first President.

My senior year and the last semester of my junior year in high school, I got the opportunity to work alongside our school district’s technology director. I’m not real sure of his title, but he was the guy that set’s up and fixes everything in the whole district. Handling an entire school district’s network with one person is a lot of work. When I was a senior, I had at least 3 study halls everyday. That’s just how my schedule worked out and I couldn’t complain about it. But instead of going to study halls, I would go down to Room 242, which I liked to call “my office”, to help get computers ready for classrooms. Since I had a key for that room too, I never really used my locker. I just used “my office” as a huge locker. All the teachers seemed to like me because I could fix their computer. I even ate lunch in the faculty rooms a couple times.

I really liked my high school and I’m glad that it’s not very big. If I would have gone to a larger school, I never would have gotten the chance to do something like that and be treated like faculty. Somehow, while doing all this extra work, I managed to maintain a GPA of 4.1. Yes, it's on a 4.0 scale, but I think my physics grade was 104% for the year, so that somehow bumped me over 4, even though that should be impossible. On June 2nd, 2005, I graduated 5th in my class.

One of the best organization’s I’ve ever been involved with is the Boy Scouts of America. I first joined the boy scouts in seventh grade. I was reluctant to join, but it only took a little persuasion from my dad for me to sign up. Little did I know that I would go all the way with it. The next 4 years were filled with leadership building activities, learning to work in groups, learning first aid, and of course camping, hiking, biking, shooting, swimming, rafting, and my favorite, kayaking. By my senior year in high school, I earned and completed everything I needed to become an Eagle Scout except for one thing. The last thing I had to do was the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. My Eagle Scout Project was to reconstruct seven sections of bleachers around a baseball field and to clean the park’s pavilion. Being in charge of the whole project, it was up to me to meet with the various township representatives, plan the project, get the project approved by the township and the Boy Scouts of America, organize groups of workers, and get the job done. I also met with store owners to get donations and discounts on supplies that I needed. By time the project was done, over 170 hours of volunteer service were completed over the course of 39 days. Shortly after concluding all the paperwork for my Eagle Scout project, I was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on March 5th, 2005. My “Trail to Eagle” is a big part of my life that has taught me more than I ever imagined.

I’m the kind of person that likes to be challenged. When I was little, I enjoyed playing with Lego’s and I wanted to be an astronaut. Striving to become an astronaut is no longer my main goal, but Lego’s are always fun. I now plan to pursue a career in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. I hope that my college career will be as fun and rewarding as my high school experiences were.

After reading others' narratives, I wish I would have talked more about my family such as in KevTotoNarrative.

I am the youngest child as well and I definetly learned a lot from my brothers' mistakes. My oldest brother is 6 years older than me, and my other brother is 3 years older than me. In ways I feel that my parents have been "broken in", but since I am the youngest and the last it also seem that I'm "babied" the most.

I don't think my narrative is actually a narrative. I think I should have arranged mine more like SmilesRfreeNarrative and start off with a strong story, then end with a few more details.

I don't mean to copy from JuliusRockfordNarrative, but I am also a procrastinator.

Proof of this is that I am working on this the night before it is due, and it's only the second week of school. Hopefully I learn my lesson early so that I stay on track the rest of the year.
