Proposal
My final project will address some problem with technology (definitional argument) in the world. You may think this topic would be too specific and aimed towards too narrow of an audience. Perhaps five or more years ago, this would be true about a topic of technology. This subject would not apply to many people. Only technology enthusiasts would be remotely interested. However, technology is growing and is a very important part of everyone’s lives whether they think so or not.
In order to limit the audience of my paper I will need to be more specific in choosing my topic. A simple example of a topic that would target leaders of large corporations is to persuade the companies to save money and support open source projects such as Linux instead of giving into the Microsoft monopoly. This would also play a part in economy. A bigger problem with technology, that could target the younger generations, is that technology is making mankind much more lazy and dependent. As the author of this article states:
"... while new technology can make things easier and better, it also brings a different set of problems. Use flashlights instead of candles and worry about bulbs and batteries. Store all your data electronically and you lose it in a power outage. Give computers control, even of simple things, and they can make annoying errors. Not that I think we should go back. The advantages of a lower-tech approach are quickly eclipsed by the convenience, safety, and economy of the newfangled one. But we do need to keep in mind that, without batteries your GPS is dead, but your compass works and the stars will come out." -- Andrew Kantor
As an intended computer science major, I am a big fan of technology. However, I think if we continue to add technology in areas we don’t need it, society will dependent too much on it. I think we need to draw the line somewhere (evaluative argument?) before we get to the point where an EMP can wipe out the planet and everything on it.
I like your topic idea. I also agree with you when you say that even though people claim that they aren't intersted in technology that it still affects them in a huge way. It sometimes bothers me how ignorant people can be about science and technology. Maybe you could throw something in your paper about people's ignorance for technology. Then maybe you could get into why people should care about it. this site is basically an essay about how technology affects people. You might find it helpful. - KevToto |
Thanks for agreeing. I didn't think anyone would. - WynesWorld
Your topic seems very interesting. I think you will need to provide a lot of examples to support your claim and make that "line" clear. I don't know very much about technology or computer software so I think your intended audience is people with a better understanding of computer science, although it would be nice if you could put it in such terms that people with less of an understanding can comprehend(good luck). The whole big brother situation is very interesting and seems to be a growing topic in todays world. I definately would like to see where you take this paper. There are many routes you can head down. - RedDog |
